1. UNICEF, Facebook launch drive to promote life-saving immunization

• As the Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted life for many, including children in need of routine immunisation, UNICEF Pakistan and Facebook have launched a campaign to promote life-saving immunisation.
• In countries like Pakistan, additional roadblocks as a result of the pandemic have been compounded by an existing hesitancy in some communities to vaccinate children as well as global disruptions to the delivery of immunisations.


2. Balochistan okays education plan 2020-25

• The provincial cabinet approved a five-year education plan (2020-25) on December 14, 2020.
• The plan has been prepared in collaboration with Global Partnership for Education, a multi-stakeholder partnership and funding platform that aims to strengthen education system in developing countries to increase the number of children in schools.
• The cabinet meeting, presided over by Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan Alyani, was informed that financial requirements for the plan would be mobilised and met by the provincial government and its partners.


3. Govt set to introduce single curriculum in primary classes

• The Single National Curriculum (SNC), which generated a national debate earlier in the year, is all set to be implemented in the coming academic session and the government has ordered the publication of textbooks for the purpose.
• `The SNC has been prepared and now provincial governments have been requested to get the books published as per their requirements, Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood told Dawn on Monday. He said new books based on SNC would be introduced at the start of the new academic session


4. KU teacher captures meteor shower on camera

• A faculty member of the Institute of Space Science and Technology, University of Karachi, engineer Absar Ahmed Khan, has managed to capture a meteor shower on camera.
• It`s the first time images of the meteor shower were captured through a specialized camera at KU. One image was taken at 4.30am on Dec 13and the other at 1.45am on Dec 14.


5. Electors meet across US to confirm Biden`s presidential win

• Electors began voting across the United States on December 14, 2020 at sessions that will formally choose Joe Biden as the next US president, effectively ending President Donald Trump`s failing attempt to overturn his loss in the Nov 3 election.
• The state-by-state Electoral College votes, traditionally an afterthought, have taken on outsized significance because of Mr Trump`s assault on the democratic process. Pushing false claims of widespread fraud, Mr Trump has pressured state officials to throw the election results out and declare him the winner.


6. US removes Sudan from sponsors of terror blacklist

• The United States on December 14, 2020 removed Sudan from its state sponsors of terrorism blacklist and declared a `fundamental change` in relations, less than two months after the Arab nation pledged to normalise ties with Israel.
• The move opens the way for aid, debt relief and investment to a country going though a rocky political transition and struggling under a severe economic crisis exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic


7. Dr Salam`s London house declared heritage site

• The British government has declared the London residence of scientist Dr Abdus Salam a national heritage site and installed a blue plaque.
• The plaque was put outside his house in Putney where he lived from 1957 till his death in 1996. Dr Salam had founded the theoretical physics department at London`s Imperial College.
• The plaque reads `Abdus Salam 19261996, Physicist, Nobel Laureate and Champion of Science in developing countries, lived here`.


8. Canada`s first Covid-19 vaccinations set to start

• Canada`s provinces of Quebec and Ontario are set to begin Covid-19 inoculations on December 14, 2020 after some of the 30,000 doses of the Pfizer/ BioNTech vaccine arrived over the weekend, making Canada one of the few western nations to start vaccinations.
• `The number of vaccinations that will take place today are probably pretty small,` retired general Rick Hillier, who is in charge of Ontario`s vaccine rollout, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. He said Toronto`s University Health Network Hospital will be doing a `small number` on Monday


9. Author John Le Carre, who probed murky spy world, dies aged 89

• John Le Carre, the author of spy thrillers like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, has died aged 89.
• David Cornwell, known to the world as John le Carre, died after a short illness in Cornwall, south-western England, on Saturday evening.
• He is survived by his wife, Jane, and four sons. The family said in a brief statement he died of pneumonia


10. New Zealand sweep WI to top Test rankings

• New Zealand shot to the top of the world Test rankings on December 14, 2020 when they thrashed the West Indies by an innings and 12 runs to wrap up an emphatic series win at Basin Reserve in Wellington.
• It lifted the Black Caps to 116 points, equal with Australia at the head of the rankings table, and also extended their unbeaten home run to 15 Tests
