1. Pakistan opens Iran border points for trade today

• Pakistan is going to re-open its western border with Iran at four more crossings from today to resume trade between the two countries while following health protocols amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
• A notification issued by the Ministry of Interior said that the border points at Gabd, Mand, Katagar and Chedgi are being opened from July 5 in the light of the decision taken by the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) in a meeting.
• According to the notification, these crossings will remain open 7 days a week, from morning till evening, as per “mutually agreed timings between both the countries.”
• In March, Pakistan had sealed its western and eastern borders to tackle the spread of deadly coronavirus in the country.


2. FBR gets fourth new chair in two years

• With the start of new fiscal year, the government on July 4, 2020 appointed Muhammad Javed Ghani as chief of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for a period of three months.
• At the same time, it also approved the transfer, after a brief period of three months, of incumbent FBR Chairperson Nausheen Amjad as federal secretary National Heritage and Culture with immediate effect.
• The cabinet took these decisions and this will be the fourth head of the FBR since the PTI took office in July 2018.
• Ms Amjad was initially given an acting charge of FBR chairperson since February 2020 when the post fell when the then chairman Shabbar Zaidi went on an indefinite medical leave only days after resuming the office on Jan 21.


3. Punjab govt allows PPSC to conduct interviews of candidates

• The Punjab government has allowed the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) to conduct interviews of candidates.
• Secretary Primary & Secondary Healthcare Department M Usman has issued a notification after the approval of the Punjab Cabinet Committee on July 4, 2020.
• Now, the PPSC can conduct interviews of the candidates in phases after implementing the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) devised by the Punjab Health Department, however procedure of written examination would remain suspended.


4. Licence of 24NewsHD suspended

• The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has suspended the licence of a private news channel, 24NewsHD, for what it called `illegal transmission of news and current affairs content`.
• The broadcast media regulator`s action invited criticism even from an important ally of the government PML-Q.
• PEMRA says the channel Value TV, for which the licence was issued to the Central Media Network Pvt, had illegally changed its name to 24NewsHD.


5. Meritech: World’s first automated hand wash system introduced in Pakistan

• Malson Group has introduced Meritech in Pakistan which is the world’s first and only fully automated hand washing system which is clinically approved by more than 50 studies along with FDA and ASF International, exceeding the hygiene standards defined by CDC.
• The new CLEANTECH by Meritech is ADA compliant and provides the world’s only technology-based approach to automated hand hygiene by removing 99.98% of dangerous pathogens within a single 12-second wash cycle. The system is very similar to that of car washes, but adapted to human needs.


6. WHO says first alerted to virus by its office, not China

• The World Health Organization has updated its account of the early stages of the COVID crisis to say it was alerted by its own office in China, and not by China itself, to the first pneumonia cases in Wuhan.
• The UN health body has been accused by US President Donald Trump of failing to provide the information needed to stem the pandemic and of being complacent towards Beijing, charges it denies.
• On April 9, WHO published an initial timeline of its communications, partly in response to criticism of its early response to the outbreak that has now claimed more than 521,000 lives worldwide.


7. UK historian quits Cambridge over slavery claim

• A British royal historian who said slavery was not genocide has quit his honorary position at Cambridge University and been dropped by his published Harper Collins.
• The comments from Professor David Starkey came during a period of soul searching in Britain over its colonial past.
• The Black Lives Matter movement that gained momentum after the death of George Floyd in US police custody in May saw the statue of a major slave trader dumped in an English harbour as protests hit cities across the UK.


8. Paris Louvre museum reopens today after crippling losses

• The Louvre in Paris, the world`s most visited museum and home to the Mona Lisa, reopens on July 5, 2020 (today) but with coronavirus restrictions in place and parts of the complex closed to visitors.
• The Louvre has been closed since March 13 and this has already led `to losses of over 40 million euros,` its director Jean-Luc Martinez said.
• Among more than 10 million visitors in 2018, almost three-quarters were tourists. `We have lost 80 per cent of our public. Seventy-five per cent of our visitors were foreigners,` Martinez said


9. China rebukes Canada over criticism of HK security law

• China fired back at Canada on Saturday for criticising Beijing`s national security law for Hong Kong, the second rebuke in a week that has added to strains of their bilateral ties.
• Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on July 4, 2020 that Canada was suspending its extradition treaty with Hong Kong due to the law and Canada`s foreign minister called the legislation `a significant step back` for liberty.
• China`s embassy in Ottawa said in a statement on its website that Canada had `grossly interfered` in Chinese affairs, adding that the new legislation would safeguard security in Hong Kong.


10. Solar radiation patterns expose the Moon

• Which way the wind blows in space has new importance for astronaut safety at the Moon. Using data from several NASA missions, scientists discovered that wind created by high-speed particles from the Sun can cause the tail of Earth’s protective magnetic bubble to flap like a windsock in a strong breeze.
• This movement can pull the tail so far out of line that it exposes the Moon to potentially damaging charged particles at times it was previously thought to be protected. The finding, which reveals a new challenge of predicting when solar activity exposes the Moon, will help scientists and engineers prepare for future lunar missions
