1. Kashmir can`t be removed from UN agenda: Pakistan

• Pakistan reminded India on September 4, 2020 that Kashmir cannot be removed from the agenda of the UN Security Council (UNSC), which was committed to resolving the issue according to the wishes of the Kashmiri people.
• `Indian representatives are either deluding themselves, or deluding their public, by asserting that they will remove Kashmir from the Security Council`s agenda,` said Munir Akram, Pakistan`s permanent representative to the United Nations, while commenting on the Indian move.
• `It will not happen`, he said.
• Ambassador Akram argued that the Security Council`s agenda was set in accordance with the established rules and procedures and could be changed only by a consensus decision of the council. `A member state cannot change the agenda unilaterally


2. PM refuses to accept aide`s resignation

• Satisfied with the explanation given by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting retired Lt Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa on allegations regarding his family`s off-shore assets and properties, Prime Minister Imran Khan declined to accept his resignation on September 4, 2020.
• Mr Bajwa called on the prime minister and, as he had said on Thursday, presented his resignation from the office of SAPM.
• `Today SAPM retired Lt Gen Bajwa presented his resignation which was not accepted by the prime minister,` stated an official press release issued by the PM Office


3. IATA`s safety audit team arrives today

• The International Air Transport Association`s Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) team is arriving on September 5, 2020 (today) to conduct audit of PIA`s various departments. The team will begin its operational safety audit on Sept 7, focusing on various departments of PIA, including flight operation, safety and security, passenger service and engineering.
• It will be visiting Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Multan airports for the purpose.
• In view of the upcoming audit, the airlines` chief executive officer (CEO), retired Air Marshal Arshad Malik, inspected the operational installations, and briefed the heads of engineering, ramp service and flight safety departments


4. South Punjab secretariat becomes operational on Oct 15

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on September 4, 2020 decided to formally make south Punjab secretariat operational on Oct 15 and expressed the hope that the decision would bring an era of prosperity and development to the under-developed areas of Punjab.
• The prime minister announced this at a meeting on the establishment and working of south Punjab secretariat.
• An effective structural organisation had been put in place in the new secretariat which was equipped with technology, e-governance and paperless culture to facilitate the people.


5. Pakistan`s business innovation ranking declines

• Pakistan`s ability, capacity and success in business innovation declined in 2020 as the country`s ranking on the Global Innovation Index (GII) fell to 107 during the year from 104 in 2019.
• The GII is compiled by the World Intellectual Property Organisation, INSEAD business school and Cornell University which publishes its annual rankings after evaluating innovations in the country`s institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, market and business sophistication, knowledge and technology outputs and creative outputs.
• The report showed Pakistan`s ranking in terms of market sophistication fell from 102 in 2019 to 116 in2020 owing to worsening indicators like ease of getting credit, domestic credit to private sector as a percentage of GDP and microfinancing. In addition, the country`s ability to attract investment also weakened during the year


6. New Swiss Alps tunnel set to transform Europe`s rail links

• Switzerland opened its Ceneri tunnel on Friday completing a mammoth project cutting a new route through the Alps which should transform rail links between northern and southern Europe.
• After opening the Lotschberg Base Tunnel in 2007 and the Gotthard Base Tunnel in 2016, the Ceneri in Switzerland`s southern Ticino region is the final stage of the New Railway Link through the Alps project.
• The route should ease the flow of goods along a railway freight corridor running from the North Sea at Rotterdam, Europe`s largest seaport, to Genoa, Italy`s biggest port, on the Mediterranean.


7. Sri Lanka govt approves increased presidential powers

• Sri Lanka`s 20th Constitutional Amendment bill, which was approved by the cabinet of ministers and published in the official gazette on September 3, 2020, seeks to revert back to the all powerful executive presidency which existed between 1978 and 2015.
• The draft 20A abolishes the Constitutional Council (CC) which has non-parliamentarians and replaces it by the Parliamentary Council (PC) which comprises of parliamentarians. It allows dual citizens to sit in parliament, and lifts the previously imposed restriction through 19A on the age limit of a presidential candidate. While according to the 19A, a Sri Lankan citizen who is also a citizen of any other country -dual citizen, was barred from being elected as a Member of Parliament, this will be removed by the 20A.The age at which a person is qualified to be elected to the Office of President, which was 30 years in the 1978 Constitution, and increased to 35 under 19 A will be reversed back to 30 years under 20A


8. Russian coronavirus vaccine passes early tests: report

• Patients involved in early tests of a Russian coronavirus vaccine developed antibodies with `no serious adverse events` according to research published in The Lancet on September 4, 2020, but experts said the trials were too small to prove safety and effectiveness.
• Russia announced last month that its vaccine, named `Sputnik V` after the Sovietera satellite that was the first launched into space in1957, had already received approval.
• This raised concerns among Western scientists over a lack of safety data, with some warning that moving too quickly on a vaccine could be dangerous. Russia denounced criticism as an attempt to undermine Moscow`s research


9. Serbia, Kosovo agree to normalise economic ties

• Serbia and Kosovo have agreed to normalise economic ties, US President Donald Trump said on September 4, 2020, hailing what he called a `major breakthrough` more than a decade after Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008.
• Trump, speaking in the Oval Office with the leaders of both countries, said Serbia had also committed to moving its embassy to Jerusalem, and Kosovo and Israel had agreed to normalise ties and establish diplomatic relations.
• Serbian President Aleksander Vucic told reporters there were still many differences between Serbia and the breakaway province, but said Friday`s agreement marked a huge step forward.


10. IAEA inspects one of two sites in Iran after long stand-off

• Iran has let the UN nuclear watchdog inspect one of the two sites it agreed last week to grant access to after a protracted standoff, while Tehran`s stockpile of enriched uranium has risen further, quarterly reports by the agency said on Friday.
• The International Atomic Energy Agency inspected one of the sites and took environmental samples there, one of the two reports obtained said, referring to samples aimed at detecting traces of nuclear material that may have been present.
• The agency`s inspectors will visit the other site `later in September 2020 on a date already agreed with Iran, to take environmental samples`, the report said.
