1. PM reconstitutes 25-member economic advisory body

• Prime Minister Imran Khan has reconstituted a 25-member Economic Advisory Council (EAC) with the induction of prominent businessmen, including former finance minister Shaukat Tarin, to ensure availability of best possible professional advice to the government on its economic policies.
• Unlike past practices, the new EAC will be headed by the prime minister himself. It will give recommendations on macro-economic stabilisation measures and carry forward the reform agenda for robust and sustained economic growth.

2. Administration of single dose Cansino begins tomorrow

• As over 4,700 more people have been infected with coronavirus, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) has issued guidelines for Ramazan, banning entry of people older than 50 years and adolescents in mosques/imam bargahs for Namaz and Taraweeh and advising the people to perform Aitikaf at home.
• Moreover, Sehr and Iftar will not be arranged at mosques or imam bargahs. As many as 594 more oxygenated beds have been provided to dedicated Covid-19 healthcare facilities with special focus on Swat and Peshawar, the NCOC was told. Administration of single dose Cansino vaccine, which has arrived from China, will commence on April 3, 2021 (tomorrow)

3. Secondary education cash programme approved

• Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Poveny Alleviation Dr Sania Nishtar has approved the Ehsaas Secondary Education Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programme for deserving households to send their children to schools.
• The first-of-its-kind initiative, which was discussed during a meeting held at the Pakistan Poveny Alleviation and Social Safety Division on April 3, 2021, will come into effect in all districts in July.
• There are 18.7 million children in the age group of six to 16 years who remain out of school in the country and the Covid-19 pandemic is likely to further accentuate the situation

4. Forces kill active TTP terrorist in NW Operation

• Security Forces on April 3, 2021 shot and killed an active Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terrorist Ashraf Ullah alias Toofani during area-sanitisation operation conducted in Boya area of North Waziristan.
• “The Security Forces had conducted an Area Sanitisation Operation in Boya, North Waziristan on reported presence of terrorists,” says a press release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate on April 3, 2021.
• During intense exchange of fire, terrorist Ashraf Ullah alias Toofani, resident of Boya was killed, it added.
• The killed terrorist remained involved in target killing, terrorist activities against Security Forces, extortion and planting Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs)

5. Russian FM to arrive on 6th

• Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will be paying an official visit to Pakistan from 6-7 April where he will meet Pakistani leaders to discuss bilateral relations and explore the possibility of enhancing cooperation in trade, economy and defence fields.
• “I can confirm that Russian Foreign Minister is visiting Pakistan on 6-7 April,” Foreign Office spokesman Zahid Hafeez told.
• The Russian leader, to be accompanied by Russia’s special envoy on Afghanistan Zamir Kaboluv, would also discuss the latest situation in Afghanistan

6. Seven deaths in UK among AstraZeneca jab recipients after blood clots

• The UK medical regulator said on April 3, 2021 that out of 30 people who suffered rare blood clots after receiving the Oxford Astra Zeneca vaccine, seven have died.
• The British acknowledgement of deaths comes as several European countries have paused the use of the AstraZeneca jab over a potential link to blood clots.
• The UK`s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said in a statement that `Out of the 30 reports up to and including 24 March, sadly 7 have died.` The reports of thrombosis, submitted by medics or members of the public via a government website, came after 18.1 million doses of the vaccine had been administered in the country.

7. US lifts Trump sanctions on Hague prosecutor, seeking cooperation

• US President Joe Biden on April 2, 2021 revoked sanctions imposed by Donald Trump on the top prosecutor of the International Criminal Court as the new administration seeks a more cooperative approach, resolving an intense disagreement with European allies.
• Former secretary of state Mike Pompeo last year denounced the `kangaroo court` in The Hague and imposed both financial sanctions and a US visa ban on its Gambian-born chief prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda. Pompeo acted after she launched an investigation into alleged war crimes by US military personnel in Afghanistan

8. Iran rejects `step-by-step` lifting of US sanctions

• Iran wants the United States to lift all sanctions and rejects any `step-by-step` easing of restrictions, the Iranian foreign ministry said on April 3, 2021 ahead of planned talks in Vienna next week on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and global powers.
• The comments came as France urged Iran to show a constructive stance in the indirect talks with Washington in the Austrian capital, which will be part of broader negotiations.
• Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said that Tehran opposed any gradual easing of sanctions. `No step-by-step plan is being considered,` he told state broadcaster Press TV

9. Babar sets new record, leaves Kohli, Amla behind

• Pakistan all-format captain Babar Azam was at it again – scoring runs and breaking records – in the first ODI against South Africa at Super sport Park in Centurion.
• Chasing 274 runs, Pakistan didn’t have a great start as they lost the wicket of opener Fakhar Zaman in just the third over.
• Babar hit 17 fours on the way to his 13th ODI century. By the virtue of the same, Babar broke the record for the fastest to reach 13 ODI tons in the 50-over format

10. Former hockey Olympian Col Zafri passes away

• The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) condoled the death of former hockey Olympian retired Col Zafar Ahmed Zafri, who passed away at the Combined Military Hospital in Rawalpindi on April 3, 2021.
• Zafri was a member of the Pakistan squad which won gold medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics and silver medal at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He performed as manager of the Pakistan team in the 1971 World Cup-1971. He also acted as PHP secretary from 1964 to 1967.
