1. Govt moves to ban TLP after reign of terror

• While ongoing clashes between activists of the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and police claimed two more lives and left many others injured on a third consecutive day, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid on April 14, 2021 announced the decision to ban the party on Punjab government`s recommendation under anti-terrorism law but added that the summary would be sent to the federal cabinet for its approval.
• A senior police official quoted sources in the government as saying that authorities had started backdoor talks with the TLP to reach `settlement` but said it would have a `devastating and demoralising effect` on the police force that had sustained injuries and even deaths just to ensure the writ of law.


2. Biden presses Pakistan as he announces Afghan exit

• US President Joe Biden warned the Taliban on April 14, 2021 he would hold them accountable on Afghanistan after the US exit and pressed nations, including Pakistan, to play supportive roles.
• `We will hold the Taliban accountable for its commitment not to allow any terrorists to threaten the US or its allies from Afghan soil. The Afghan government has made that commitment to us as well,` Biden said in a speech announcing the complete pullout of US troops before Sept 11.
• `We will ask other countries in the region to support Afghanistan, especially Pakistan, as well as Russia, China, India and Turkey


3. PN ship returns after relief mission in Africa

• Pakistan Navy ship Nasr arrived at the Karachi Port on April 14, 2021 after completing a three month-long humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) mission to the African countries.
• The mission was planned in line with the government of Pakistan`s policy of `Engage Africa` to open new vistas of bilateral cooperation with African countries and further strengthen the bonds of friendship.
• During its deployment in Africa, Nasr delivered 1,000 tonnes of rice as a gift from the people of Pakistan to Djibouti, Sudan, Benin and Niger


4. Pakistan set to achieve fiscal sustainability: IMF

• Pakistan is all set to achieve some major goals including fiscal sustainability under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF), International Monetary Fund (IMF) Country Representative Teresa Daban Sanchez said on April 14, 2021.
• Speaking at a webinar at the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), Ms Sanchez said it is being achieved through the strategy by removing exemptions and privileges, enhancing social and productive spending, coordination with provinces, and elimination of quasi fiscal circular debt and losses of state-owned enterprises (SOEs)


5. Denmark cuts AstraZeneca vaccine altogether

• Denmark on April 14, 2021 announced it would stop using the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine altogether, becoming the first European country to do so over suspected rare but serious side effects.
• `Denmark`s vaccination campaign will go ahead without the AstraZeneca vaccine,` Danish Health Authority director Soren Brostrom told journalists, despite recommendations from the World Health Organisation and Europe`s medicines watchdog to keep using it.


6. Pakistani, Indian officials held talks in Dubai over Kashmir

• Top intelligence officers from Pakistan and India held secret talks in Dubai in January in a fresh effort to calm tensions over Kashmir, according to people with close knowledge of the matter in New Delhi.
• But the two governments have reopened a back channel of diplomacy aimed at a modest roadmap to normalising ties over the next several months, the people said.
• Kashmir has long been a flashpoint between India and Pakistan, both of which claim all of the region but rule only in part.


7. 11 Muslim groups banned in Sri Lanka

• Sri Lanka on April 14, 2021 banned 11 Muslim organisations, including the militant Islamic State group and Al Qaeda, a week ahead of the second anniversary of the Easter Sunday suicide bombings which killed 279 people.
• Anyone linked to the groups the other nine of which are local religious and social organisations faces up to 20 years in jail, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said in a gazette notification.
• Ahead of the anniversary, the country`s Roman Catholics had threatened to take to the streets over what they say is the government`s failure to act against those responsible for the attacks


8. UAE to send rover to Moon next year

• Lunar exploration company is pace will transport a United Arab Emirates rover to the moon in 2022, the company said on April 14, 2021, as the UAE pushes for rapid expansion in the space exploration business to diversify its economy.
• The UAE is using its space programme to develop its scientific and technological capabilities and reduce its reliance on oil. The Gulf state`s, and the Arab world`s, first interplanetary probe entered Mars` orbit in February. It is now sending data about the Martian atmosphere and climate


9. Babar smashes record-breaking 122 in Pakistan victory

• Captain Babar Azam hit a record-breaking 122 to lead Pakistan to an impressive nine-wicket victory over hosts South Africa at Centurion on April 14, 2021 and a 2-1 lead in the four-match Twenty20 International series.
• Mohammad Rizwan scored an unbeaten 73 as he and Babar, whose century came off 49 balls, shared a record 197-run partner-ship in a devastating display of batting that enabled the touring side to reel in South Africa`s competitive 203-5 with consummate ease at the Super Sport Park.
• They won with two overs to spare after making 205-1, dispatching the home bowling to all corners of the ground


10. Babar ends Kohli`s reign as top ODI batsman

• Pakistan captain Babar Azam dethroned Indian maestro Virat Kohli after more than three years as the world`s number one batsman in One-day International (ODI) rankings, the International Cricket Council announced on April 14, 2021.
• The 26-year-old becomes the fourth Pakistani batsmen to get the top spot in ODIs and the first since Mohammad Yousuf in 2003.
• `Pakistan captain Babar has ended Kohli`s long reign at the top of the ICC Men`s ODI player rankings,` the ICC said in a statement from its Dubai headquarters.
• Babar knocked 103, 32 and 94 in a three-match series in South Africa which Pakistan won 2-1 last week.
