1. Vaccination for 50-59 age group to start from 21st

• While coronavirus-related deaths in the country have surpassed the figure of 16,000, number of active cases has swelled to 79,108 with 4,984 patients admitted to hospitals.
• The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) decided on April 17, 2021 to start vaccination of people in the 50-59 age group from Wednesday, April 21.
• The data shared by the NCOC showed that with over 100 deaths for five continuous days, the number of overall deaths has risen to 16,094.


2. Shaukat Tareen, Shibli Faraz take oath as federal ministers

• President Dr Arif Alvi on April 17, 2021 administered oath to the newly appointed Federal Ministers Shaukat Fayyaz Tareen and Senator Shibli Faraz at a ceremony held here in Aiwan-e-Sadr.
• On Friday last, Prime Minister Imran Khan appointed the former PPP senator Shaukat Tareen as finance minister in yet another cabinet reshuffle during the third year of the PTI-led government.
• Tarin had also served as finance minister in former premier Yousaf Raza Gilani’s cabinet from 2009 to 2010


3. Smart lockdown imposed in Balochistan

• The Balochistan government has imposed a smart lockdown across the province for two weeks to slow down the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
• Balochistan government spokesman Liaquat Shahwani said the decision was taken as the ratio of Covid-19 cases had reached nine per cent in the province and unfortunately the people were not taking the third wave of the pandemic seriously.
• He said all trading centres, shops, shopping malls and markets would remain closed for two days per week


4. Three CM aides resign for `personal reasons`

• Three aides to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister resigned from their respective positions here on April 17, 2021.
• They included adviser on science and information technology Ziaullah Bangash, adviser on energy and power Himayatullah Khan and special assistant on excise and taxation Ghazi Ghazan Jamal, who cited `personal and unavoidable circumstances` as reasons for quitting their offices.
• The development comes on the heels of the induction of four new ministers, including former senior minister Mohammad Atif Khan, Shakeel Khan, Abdul Shakoor Khan and Faisal Amin Khan, who were sworn in on Monday


5. TLP chief placed in 4th Schedule under terrorism law

• After the proscription of religious party Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) for holding violent protests countrywide, the Punjab government has declared party chief Allama Saad Hussain Rizvi as proscribed person under the terrorism law.
• The updated list of the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) regarding proscribed persons says that the TLP chief ‘Hafiz Muhammad Saad’ has been placed on the Fourth Schedule under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), 1997


6. FM leaves for UAE on three-day official visit

• Amid reports that the United Arab Emirates has been mediating between India and Pakistan for reducing fears of a conflict in South Asia for the past few months, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi embarked on a three-day official visit to the Gulf state on April 17, 2021.
• During the visit, the foreign minister will meet his counterpart Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other UAE dignitaries. He will also meet members of Pakistani diaspora and interact with local and international media.


7. Houston police get first Muslim assistant chief, a Pakistani

• Yasar Bashir, a Pakistani American commander, has been appointed Assistant Chief of Houston Police as head of the family violence department, said an official announcement.
• Mr Bashir, who also appeared in a National Geographic feature on Muslims in America in 2018, will be the first Muslim assistant chief of police in the United States.
• Born near Lahore, he came to the United States with his family in 1985, when he was only 8. Mr Bashir joined the police force in 2001 and was in the academy when 9/11 happened


8. Iran names suspect in Natanz attack, says he fled country

• Iran named a suspect on April 17, 2021 in the attack on its Natanz nuclear facility that damaged centrifuges there, saying he had fled the country hours before the sabotage happened.
• While the extent of the damage from the April 11 sabotage remains unclear, it comes as Iran tries to negotiate with world powers over allowing the US to re-enter its tattered nuclear deal and lift the economic sanctions it faces.
• Already, Iran has begun enriching uranium up to 60 per-cent purity in response three times higher than ever before, though in small quantities. The sabotage and Iran`s response to it also have further inflamed tensions across the Mideast, where a shadow war between Tehran and Israel, the prime suspect in the sabotage, still rages


9. Russia expels Ukrainian diplomat after detention

• Russia said April 17, 2021 that a Ukrainian diplomat allegedly caught “red-handed” trying to obtain sensitive information must leave the country.
• In recent years Russia has detained a number of Ukrainian nationals on suspicion of spying but the detention of a diplomat is rare and seen as a sign of sharply rising tensions. “A Ukrainian diplomat, a consul of Ukraine’s Consulate General in Saint Petersburg, Alexander Sosonyuk, has been detained by Russia’s FSB,” the security service said in a statement, using the Russian language spelling of his name


10. Rublev ends Nadal`s 12th Monte Carlo title bid

• Rafael Nadal`s bid for a 12th Monte Carlo Masters title was shattered by Russia`s Andrey Rublev, who swept to a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 quarter-final win on April 17, 2021 with the great Spaniard admitting his serve was `a disaster`.
• Nadal, bidding to reach the semifinals of a Masters for the 75th time, followed world number one Novak Djokovic, who was beaten in the third round, out of the tournament
