1. Six petroleum exploration blocks awarded to state-run firms

• The government on April 23, 2021 awarded six petroleum exploration blocks in Sindh, Balochistan and Punjab to state-run oil and gas exploration and development companies.
• The exploration licences (ELs) and petroleum concession agreements (PCAs) were signed by Petroleum Secretary Mian Asad Hayaud Din and Director General of Petroleum Concessions Abdul Jabbar Memon on behalf of the government and Managing Director of Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) Shahid Saleem Khan, Managing Director of Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MPCL) Faheem Haider and Managing Director of Pakistan Petroleum Limited Moin Raza Khan at a ceremony witnessed by newly appointed Minister for Energy Mohammad Hammad Azhar.


2. 32pc job quota being reserved for three south Punjab divisions

• Punjab Finance Minister Hashim Jawan Bakht has reiterated that 32pc quota in government jobs is being reserved for three divisions of South Punjab for the provision of human resources to the region.
• For this purpose, he said, a summary of amendments to the existing law on civil services had been prepared. The allocation of quota in jobs would improve the administrative arrangements for deployment of employees from the respective districts for the provision of services in South Punjab, he said.
• Flanked by Special Assistant to Chief Minister on Information Dr Firdous Ashig Awan, Mr Bakht told a press conference at the Chief Minister`s Secretariat on Friday that land acquisition for the secretariat and acquisition of buildings for temporary offices for relocated departments would be done before the end of the current financial year


3. WB approves $400m to help KP`s education, health services

• The World Bank has approved a $400 million loan for Pakistan to accelerate investments in education and health services in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
• The financing from the International Development Association (IDA) on April 23, 2021 approved the loan for the KP government`s Spending Effectively for Enhanced Development (SPEED) programme to help the provincial government strengthen its management of public resources and fiscal planning to sustain human capital investments in education and health care services.


4. Edhi Foundation offers India help to address Covid crisis

• Expressing concern and sympathy over growing cases of Covid-19 in India, Pakistan`s premier social welfare organisation Edhi Foundation has offered help to the neighbouring country.
• Faisal Edhi, managing trustee of the Edhi Foundation and son of the world famous philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi, in a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, said they had been closely following the impact that the Covid-19 crisis had cast on the people of India.


5. Canada bans flights from India, Pakistan

• Canada suspended all passenger flights from India and Pakistan on April 23, 2021 for 30 days, Transportation Minister Omar Alghabra announced, citing increased Covid-19 cases detected in travellers arriving from these countries.
• `Given the higher number of cases of Covid-19 detected in air passengers arriving in Canada from India and Pakistan… I am suspending all commercial and private passenger flights arriving in Canada from India and Pakistan for 30 days,` Alghabra told a news conference


6. Saudi Arabia bans fresh food imports from Lebanon

• Saudi Arabia announced on April 23, 2021 a ban on import of fruits and vegetables from Lebanon, blaming an increase in drug smuggling, in a measure that will add to Lebanon`s economic woes.
• Lebanon is already in the throes of a deep financial crisis that is posing the biggest threat to its stability since the 1975-1990 civil war. Its agriculture minister said the Saudi move was a `great loss` and that the trade was worth $24 million a year.
• The Lebanese foreign ministry said it had been informed of the ban through the Saudi embassy and the foreign minister had relayed it to top officials


7. Biden tells Erdogan he plans to recognise 1915 killings of Armenians as genocide

• President Joe Biden told Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on April 23, 2021 that the United States intended to recognisethe1915killingsof Armenians during Ottoman rule as genocide, a potential further blow to the already frayed ties between the two Nato allies.
• The much-anticipated first phone call between the two leaders took place more than three months after Biden`s Jan 20 inauguration, a delay that is widelyseen as a cold shoulder to Erdogan, who had enjoyed close ties with former president Donald Trump


8. EU plans summit with US in June

• The European Union has invited US President Joe Biden to a summit in June, the president of the European Council Charles Michel said on April 23, 2021.
• Biden will be at the G7 summit in Britain one June 11 to 13, and at Nato in Brussels on June 14. He will now also meet Michel and European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen


9. SpaceX launches third crew flight with recycled rocket and capsule

• SpaceX launched four astronauts into orbit on April 23, 2021 using a recycled rocket and capsule, the third crew flight in less than a year for Elon Musks rapidly expanding company.
• The astronauts from the US, Japan and France should reach the International Space Station early Saturday morning, following a 23-hour ride in the same Dragon capsule used by SpaceX`s debut crew last May.
• They`ll spend six months at the orbiting lab


10. Jongwe stars with four wickets as Zimbabwe stun Pakistan to level T20 series

• All-rounder Luke Jongwe starred with four wickets as Zimbabwe successfully defended a modest total to pull off a historic maiden Twenty20 International victory over in-form Pakistan with a 19-run triumph in the second game of their three-match series at the Harare Sports Club on April 23, 2021.
• Pakistan skipper Babar Azam won the toss, opted to bowl, and the tourists restricted their hosts to 118-9 with Tinashe Kamunhukamwe the only batter to impress with 34.
• Set a run-a-ball target for victory, Pakistan lost the in-form opener Mohammad Rizwan for only 13 and Babar with 41 was the lone batter to star as they slumped to 99 all out off 19.5 overs
