1. Govt allows citizens aged 40, above to sign up for vaccination

• In a major development, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on April 26, 2021 decided to open registration of around 12 million people in the age group of 40 to 50 years and allowed walk-in vaccination facility for citizens over 50.
• Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar said people who were 40 years and above could get themselves registered for vaccination from April 27, 2021 (today).


2. Notification on Islamic content in syllabus withdrawn

• Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar has taken notice of omitting Islamic content from the curriculum except the subject of Islamic Studies.
• On his directive, the Department of Human Rights and Minorities Affairs withdrew the notification to implement the recommendations of the one-member commission.
• Mr Sarwar immediately stopped the implementation of the recommendations of the Shoaib Suddle Commission. A new notification has also been issued. The Muslim scholars expressed their gratitude to the governor.


3. `Immunising children can avert up to 17pc mortality`

• Immunising children can avert up to 17pc of childhood mortality in Pakistan thus help contribute towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 on reducing child morbidity and mortality.
• Speakers said that while speaking to participants of an event organised by the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) and the Federal Expanded Program of Immunisation (EPI) to commemorate the `World Immunisation Week (WIW), 2021` with the theme `vaccines bring us closer


4. KP assembly adopts resolution on Facebook`s monetization

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution aimed at allowing Facebook`s monetisation in Pakistan.
• Moved by MPA Ziaullah Bangash of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, the resolution recommended to the provincial government to ask the federal government to take steps to `turn on` Facebook`s monetisation so that its users, especially the youth, could benefit from the positive use of the media platform and earn money


5. EU launches legal action against AstraZeneca

• The European Union`s executive branch said on April 26, 2021 that it has launched legal action against coronavirus vaccine maker AstraZeneca for failing to respect the terms of its contract with the 27-nation bloc.
• The AstraZeneca vaccine has been central to Europe`s immunisation campaign, and a linchpin in the global strategy to get vaccines to poorer countries. But the slow pace of deliveries has frustrated the Europeans and they have held the company responsible for partly delaying their vaccine rollout


6. Situation in India `beyond heartbreaking`: WHO chief

• The World Health Organisation chief voiced alarm on April 26, 2021 at India`s record-breaking wave of Covid-19 cases and deaths, saying the organisation was rushing to help address the crisis.
• `The situation in India is beyond heartbreaking,` Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters.
• He spoke as India battled a catastrophic coronavirus wave that has overwhelmed hospitals, with crematoriums working at full capacity


7. Russia orders Navalny network to suspend activities

• Russian prosecutors on April 26, 2021 suspended the activities of Alexei Navalny`s regional offices, in a move his team said would essentially shut down the jailed opposition figure`s decade-long movement against President Vladimir Putin.
• The order came as a court began considering whether to designate Navalny`s Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) and his regional offices as extremist organisations, putting them on par with the militant Islamic State group and Al Qaeda and banning them in Russia


8. Chloe Zhao: the second woman to win best director title

• Chloe Zhao has made history at the 2021 Academy Awards, becoming the first woman of colour to win best director and just the second woman to win the award.
• Zhao won the directing Oscar for Nomadland, joining Kathryn Bigelow, who won in 2009 for The Hurt Locker.


9. Anthony Hopkins becomes oldest star to win Oscar

• Three decades after Anthony Hopkins` chilling portrayal of serial killer Hannibal Lecter earned a leadactor Oscar, the role of a man fighting dementia brought him his second trophy.
• The 83-year-old took the award for his performance on The Father, becoming the oldest actor or actress to win an Oscar, edging out Christopher Plummers supporting actor win at age 82 in the 2010 film Beginners.
• Hopkins win was anticlimactic on a show where he wasn`t present to accept the trophy. Presenter Joaquin Phoenix`s reading of his name was the last dramatic moment of a most unusual ceremony.


10. Youn Yuh-jung: second Asian to bag best supporting actress award

• Youn Yuh-jung, the feisty grand mom in Minari, capture d more than her movie grandson`s heart.
• Youn, a prominent film and TV actor in her home country of South Korea, won the best supporting actress award at Sunday`s Oscars. She`s the second Asian actress to triumph in the category, more than six decades after Japanese-born Miyoshi Umeki earned the trophy for 1957s Sayonara.
