1. ADB puts Pakistan growth rate at 2pc this year

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on April 28, 2021 forecast Pakistan`s GDP would grow by two per cent during the current year subject to successful vaccine rollout and implementation of stabilisation measures.
• `Assuming successful vaccine rollout and the implementation of economic reform under a stabilisation programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), GDP is expected to grow by 4pc in FY2022 as consumption strengthens and investor confidence improves,` the ADB said in its flagship Asian Development Outlook (ADO)2021.


2. Farrukh appointed minister of state for information

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on April 29, 2021 appointed Farrukh Habib as Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting.
• Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry in a tweet broke the news about the appointment of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leader Farrukh Habib as minister of state.
• According to Mr Chaudhry, President Dr Arif Alvi will administer the oath of office to the newly appointed minister of state on April 29, 2021 (today)


3. Tobacco Control Cell disbanded

• Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) has disbanded the Tobacco Control Cell (TCC) and terminated services of its staff.
• According to anti-tobacco advocates this sends out an extremely negative message to the international community, which is going to observe World No Tobacco Day next month. Parliamentary Secretary (Health) Dr Nausheen Hamid was unaware of the decision and said that she will look into it.


4. China reiterates support to Pakistan in Covid-19 fight

• China has assured Pakistan and other South Asian nations of its continued cooperation in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic by providing both medical supplies and economic assistance, says a joint statement issued at the UN headquarters in New York.
• China gave this assurance at a video conference on the joint response to Covid-19 on Tuesday, attended by the foreign ministers of China, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
• `The foreign ministers appreciated China`s efforts in addressing this challenge.


5. Imran, Gates agree to continue working on shared objectives

• Prime Minister Imran Khan and Bill Gates, co-chair of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, on April 28, 2021 discussed matters relating to Covid-19 response, polio eradication and climate change, and agreed to continue working together on the shared objectives.
• In their telephonic conversation, they agreed on the importance of urgently stopping the spread of coronavirus, polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases in Pakistan


6. Brutal wave sends India`s Covid toll past 200,000

• India`s coronavirus death toll shot past 200,000 on April 28, 2021 as a relentless wave of new cases swamped hospitals and sent desperate families out into the streets of the capital in search of oxygen supplies and medicine.
• Infection and death rates are soaring in the vast country of 1.3 billion, in contrast with the United States and some European nations which are taking tentative steps back towards normal life.
• The virus has now killed more than 3.1 million people worldwide, with India driving the latest surge, recording 360,000 new infections a global record and more than 3,000 deaths on Wednesday


7. Michael Collins of Apollo 11 fame dies at 90

• American astronaut Michael Collins, who stayed behind in the command module of Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969, while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin traveled to the lunar surface to become the first humans to walk on the moon, died on Wednesday at age 90.
• A statement released by his family said Collins died of cancer.
• Often described as the `forgotten` third astronaut on the historic mission, Collins remained alone for more than 21 hours until his two colleagues returned in the lunar module. He lost contact with mission control in Houston each time the spacecraft circled the dark side of the moon


8. Russia expels 7 European diplomats

• Moscow on April 28, 2021 expelled seven European diplomats after their countries ordered Russian diplomats to leave in solidarity with the Czech Republic, which is engulfed in a diplomatic row with Russia.
• The Czech government this month accused Russian security services of being behind a deadly explosion at an arms depot in eastern Czech Republic in 2014


9. US Navy fires warning shots in tense encounter with Iran

• An American warship fired warning shots when vessels of Iran`s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard came too close to a patrol in the Persian Gulf, the US Navy said on April 28, 2021. It was the first such shooting in nearly four years.
• The Navy released black-and-white footage of the encounter on Monday night in international waters of the northern reaches of the Persian Gulf near Kuwait, Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. In it, lights can be seen in the distance and what appears to be a single gunshot can be heard, with a tracer round racing across the top of the water


10. Pakistan qualify for 2022 Asian Games baseball

• Pakistan have qualified for the baseball event of the 2022 Asian Games scheduled to be held from Sept 18-22 in Hangzhou, China.
• Pakistan Federation Baseball president Syed Fakhar Ali Shah said Pakistan would be among the 12 baseball teams which will participate in the 19th edition of the Asian gala.
• The countries that will feature in the baseball event in Hangzhou include Japan (world No. 1), Korea (No. 2), Taiwan (No. 3), China (4), Pakistan (5), Hong Kong (6), Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Mongolia and Laos.
