1. Vaccination of citizens over 40 gets under way on May 3

• With over 5,000 more people infected with coronavirus over the past 24 hours, Pakistan on April 29, 2021 decided to curtail inbound passenger flights to stop transportation of Indian `double mutant` Covid-19 variant.
• As another one million doses of Sinopharm arrived from China, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) has decided to start vaccination of people aged over 40 years from May3.
• Import permission for 6,000 tonnes of oxygen and 5,000 oxygen cylinders has been granted to ramp up healthcare facilities in the country. Scrap industry of Misri Shah, Lahore, is being closed for diverting oxygen to the healthcare sector


2. Envoy to S. Arabia suspended, six diplomats recalled

• In an unprecedented move that sent alarm bells ringing across Pakistani diplomatic missions abroad, the government has suspended the outgoing ambassador to Saudi Arabia and recalled six of the diplomats posted at the embassy in Riyadh on allegation of improper treatment of the Pakistanis living in the kingdom.
• An inquiry has also been ordered against the ambassador and the recalled diplomats


3. SECP launches combined single certificate

• The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has now introduced a single combined digital certificate evidencing registration with the SECP and some provincial departments simultaneously.
• The move aims to strive for reducing physical interaction with the citizens and provide services through use of modern technology at the door-step of the end-users.
• The initiative is expected to significantly reduce the overall `Starting a Business` time in Pakistan and would have a positive impact on the country`s ranking on the Doing Business Index


4. US to revive duty-free zones in Pakistan, Afghanistan

• A bipartisan bill will soon be introduced in the US Senate to set up duty-free export zones along the Pak-Afghan border, says a senior US lawmaker.
• The proposed legislation will allow these trade pockets, known as the Reconstruction Opportunity Zones or ROZs, to export certain duty-free goods to the United States, said Senator Van Hollen, a key Democrat on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
• Mr Van Hollen told a full committee hearing on the US policy in Afghanistan on Tuesday that elements within the Biden administration already support this proposal


5. Rs7,500 denomination prize bonds withdrawn

• The government has decided to withdraw prize bonds of Rs7,500 denomination with immediate effect and allowed its conversion into registered bonds of higher denomination.
• In a notification issued by the finance ministry, the government had ordered it `to withdraw Rs7,500 denomination National Prize Bonds from circulation with immediate effect under Sub-Rule 1 of Rule 4 of National Prize Bonds Rules 1999`


6. NATO begins withdrawal from Afghanistan

• Nato has started the withdrawal of its mission from Afghanistan following a decision by President Joe Biden to bring US forces home, an alliance official said on April 29, 2021.
• `Nato Allies decided in mid-April to start the withdrawal of Resolute Support Mission forces by May 1 and this withdrawal has begun. This will be an orderly, coordinated, and deliberate process,` a Nato official said.
• Members of the US-backed alliance agreed this month to wrap up their 9,600-strong mission in Afghanistan after Biden made the call to end Washington`s longest war.


7. Navalny network disbands as gaunt Kremlin critic appears in court

• Alexei Navalny`s political network said on April 29, 2021 it is disbanding, as the jailed Kremlin critic appeared in court, gaunt and shaven headed, for the first time since ending his hunger strike.
• During the hearing, which is part of an appeal by Navalny against a defamation sentence imposed in February for insulting a World War II veteran, President Vladimir Putin`s best known domestic opponent said he had started eating again


8. Biden celebrates an America `on the move again`

• President Joe Biden triumphantly declared that the United States is `on the move again` in a rousing speech to Congress on April 28, 2021, calling for trillions of dollars to rebuild the post-pandemic US middle class and give new life to `forgotten` workers.
• Lauding the success of mass vaccination against Covid-19, Biden told Congress and the nation on primetime television that `in America, we always get up`.
• `America is ready for take-off, he said. `We are working again, dreaming again, discovering again, leading the world again


9. China launches first module of space station Heavenly Palace

• China launched the first module of its `Heavenly Palace` space station on April 29, 2021, a milestone in Beijing`s ambitious plan to establish a permanent human presence in space.
• Billions of dollars have been poured into space exploration as China seeks to reflect its rising global stature and growing technological might, following in the footsteps of the United States, Russia and Europe.
• The Tianhe core module, which houses life support equipment and a living space for astronauts, was launched from Wenchang in China`s tropical Hainan province on a Long March 5B rocket on Thursday, state television showed


10. Scientists claim discovering first pregnant Egyptian mummy

• Polish scientists said on April 29, 2021 they have discovered the world`s first pregnant Egyptian mummy while carrying out scans on the 2,000-year-old remains kept at the National Museum in Warsaw.
• `My husband Stanislaw, an Egyptian archaeologist, and I looked at the X-ray images and noticed a familiar sight for parents of three children in the belly of the dead woman a little foot!` Marzena Ozarek-Szilke, an anthropologist and archaeologist at the University of Warsaw, told journalists.
• Further analysis revealed the whole foetus and scientists working on the Warsaw Mummy Project believe the woman was between 20 and 30 years old and was 26-30 weeks pregnant
