6. Sri Lanka seeks urgent help to feed children

• Sri Lanka issued an urgent appeal on August 1, 2022 to tackle rapidly spreading malnutrition among children as its economic crisis leaves nine out of 10 people dependent on state handouts.
• The Ministry for Women and Child Affairs said they were seeking private donations to feed possibly several hundred thousand children wasting due to insufficient food.
• The bankrupt state, grapping with Sri Lanka`s worst economic crisis since independence, was unable to sustain welfare.
• `When the Covid pandemic was at its peak, the problem was bad, but now, with the economic crisis, the situation is far worse,` secretary Neil Bandara Hapuhinne told reporters in Colombo


7. NZ reopens borders, but cautious on arrivals

• New Zealand`s borders fully reopened on August 1, 2022, but the return of international visitors and students is only expected to start with a trickle following the lifting of Covid-based travel restrictions.
• New Zealand reported 52,538 cases of the coronavirus over the last seven days yet is ready to re-start welcoming back visitors.
• The final phase of its borders reopening began at midnight local time on Sunday with the maritime border and all overseas visitors allowed to submit visa applications.
• However, Tourism New Zealand chief executive Rene de Monchy anticipates business picking up slowly compared to pre Covid levels


8. First grain shipment leaves Ukraine for Lebanon

• The first shipment of Ukrainian grain left the port of Odessa on August 1, 2022 morning, Turkey announced, as Kyiv said the `brutal` shelling by Moscow of the southern city of Mykolaiv had killed an agriculture tycoon.
• The blockage of deliveries from warring Russia and Ukraine two of the world`s biggest grain exporters has contributed to soaring food prices, hitting the world`s poorest nations especially hard.
• Last month both sides signed a landmark deal, with assistance from Turkey and the United Nations, to enable Ukraine to resume its grain exports


9. US, allies slam `dangerous` Russian nuclear rhetoric

• The United States and its nuclear allies rebuked Russia on August 1, 2022 for `irresponsible and dangerous` talk about possibly deploying nuclear weapons, as a review of the keystone nuclear treaty opened at the United Nations.
• `Following Russia`s unprovoked and unlawful war of aggression against Ukraine, we call on Russia to cease its irresponsible and dangerous nuclear rhetoric and behavior, to uphold its international commitments,` said the US, France and Britain in a statement.
• `Nuclear weapons, for as long as they exist, should serve defensive purposes, deter aggression, and prevent war. We condemn those who would use or threaten to use nuclear weapons for military coercion, intimidation, and blackmail,` they said


10. Tech hub Shenzhen accelerates China`s driverless car dreams
