1. Pakistan wants refugees kept inside Afghanistan

• National Security Adviser Moeed Yusuf has said that arrangements should be made to keep displaced Afghans inside their country instead of pushing them into Pakistan.
• Mr Yusuf said Pakistan was focused on ensuring that tensions in Afghanistan do not lead to more bloodshed. `But if a situation arises, it is the responsibility of the international community to create a secure area inside Afghanistan,` said the Pakistani official when asked if Islamabad was ready to accept more refugees from Pakistan.
• `Why make them dar-ba-dar (homeless)? Make arrangement for them inside their country. Pakistan does not have the capacity to take more refugees


2. Sindh eases restrictions after backlash

• In a move to ease the life of the common man, the Sindh government on July 31, 2021 took a step back by revising the partial restrictions amid strong criticism from the Centre and traders associations a day after imposing them.
• The provincial government lifted the ban on pillion riding, allowed small transport to ply within the limits of Karachi and exempted certain businesses from time restrictions.
• However, the Pakistan Peoples Party-led government brushed aside criticism against the partial restrictions for nine days and sought cooperation even from arch political rivals, with an appeal to the people to get themselves vaccinated against Covid-19 at the earliest


3. Two soldiers martyred in Waziristan attacks

• Two soldiers were martyred and nine others wounded in attacks by militants on security forces in different areas of South and North Waziristan tribal districts on Friday night and Saturday.
• Officials said that terrorists attacked security forces in the Shawal area of North Waziristan district near the Afghan border on Saturday.
• One soldier embraced martyrdom and two others suffered injuries.
• The injured soldiers were shifted to a hospital in Miramshah


4. Proposed law on new status for GB finalized

• The Ministry of Law and Justice has finalised the proposed legislation to award provisional provincial status to strategically located Gilgit Baltistan (GB).
• Under the proposed law, the Supreme Appellate Court (SAC) of GB may be abolished and the region`s Election Commission is likely to be merged with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
• Sources in the law ministry told Dawn that the draft of the bill titled 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill had been prepared and submitted to Prime Minister Imran Khan.


5. UN warns hunger is expected to rise in 23 global hotspots

• Hunger is expected to rise in 23 global hotspots in the next three months with the highest alerts for catastrophic situations in Ethiopia`s embattled Tigray region, southern Madagascar, Yemen, South Sudan and northern Nigeria, two UN agencies warned.
• The Food and Agriculture Organisation and World Food Programme said in a new report on Hunger Hotspots between August and November that acute food insecurity is likely to further deteriorate.
• They put Ethiopia at the top of the list, saying the number of people facing starvation and death is expected to rise to 401,000 the highest number since the 2011 famine in Somalia if humanitarian aid isn`t provided quickly


6. US Navy says drone strike hit oil tanker off Oman

• US Navy explosive experts believe a drone strike targeted an oil tanker that came under attack off the coast of Oman in the Arabian Sea, killing two on board, the American military said on July 31, 2021.
• The strike on Thursday night on the oil tanker Mercer Street marks the first-known fatal attack after years of assaults on commercial shipping in the region linked to tensions with Iran over its tattered nuclear deal. While no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, Israeli officials alleged Tehran launched the drone strike


7. Taliban, Afghan troops clash outside Herat city

• Afghan troops and Taliban fighters clashed again on the outskirts of Herat on July 31, 2021, a day after a police guard was killed when a United Nations compound in the western city came under attack.
• Violence has surged across the country since early May, when the militants launched a sweeping offensive as US-led foreign forces began a final withdrawal that is now almost complete.
• The Taliban have seized scores of districts across Afghanistan, including in Herat province, where the group has also captured two border crossings adjoining Iran and Turkmenistan


8. Pakistan defy rampant Pooran to win second T20

• Pakistan`s versatile bowling attack did just enough to restrain a rampant Nicholas Pooran and come away with a seven-run victory over the West Indies in the second Twenty20 International of the four-match series at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on July 31, 2021.
• Following a rain-ruined opening encounter in Barbados three days earlier, Babar Azam`s team will go into the third match of the series on Sunday, also at Providence, with 1-0 lead.
• Pooran`s explosive unbeaten 62 off 33 balls with six sixes and four fours kept the West Indies` hopes alive even in the final over when 20 runs were required to overhaul Pakistan`s total of 157-8


9. Jamaica sweep women`s 100m, Djokovic leaves Tokyo empty-handed

• Jamaican sprinter Elaine Thompson Herah blazed to 100 metres gold on July 31, 2021, becoming the fastest woman alive as she denied compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce a third Olympic title.
• In retaining her title Thompson-Herah added a sparkling flourish to a day which had seen US gymnast Simone Biles withdraw from two more finals in Tokyo, and a listless Novak Djokovic fail to take bronze in tennis after his dream of a `Golden Slam` was dashed


10. Fernandez, Galvez trap Spain`s first gold

• Alberto Fernandez`s rock-steady hands helped Spain grab its first gold medal of the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday as he collaborated with Fatima Galvez to win the new trap mixed team event at the Asaka Shooting Range.
• The Spaniards had topped the qualifying rounds to storm into the gold medal match but Galvez looked a bundle of nerves against San Marino`s Gian Marco Berti and Alessandra Perilli.
• She missed five of her first eight targets, including the first three in a row, before taking a timeout
