1. Unvaccinated people face train travel ban from Oct 1

• The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on August 9, 2021 decided to prohibit unvaccinated people from travelling on trains from Oct 1 and called on the provinces to ensure that standard operating procedures (SOPs) were followed during Muharram.
• On the other hand, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr Faisal Sultan has announced that the people whose second dose was due could get it without the code from the helpline.
• The NCOC meeting, presided over by Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar, expressed concern over the spread of coronavirus in Rawalpindi and Peshawar and decided to disallow people, who had not been inoculated, from travelling on trains from Oct 1.


2. JCP to consider Shaikh`s appointment to SC today

• Undeterred by the furore over the issue of ad hoc judge, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) is all set to meet on Tuesday (today) for consultations on the temporary appointment of Sindh High Court (SHC) Chief Justice Ahmed Ali Shaikh to the Supreme Court.
• The JCP, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmed, is meeting despite the SHC chief justice`s letter to the commission dispelling an impression that he had ever accorded his consent to attending sittings of the Supreme Court as an ad hoc judge.
• The JCP meeting is also on schedule despite a joint call by the Sindh Bar Council (SBC), Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA) and Karachi Bar Association (KBA) to boycott court proceedings throughout the province on Aug 10 over the issue


3. China to provide 100m vaccine doses, envoy tells president

• President Dr Arif Alvi was apprised on August 9, 2021 that China would provide 100 million doses of coronavirus vaccine to Pakistan by the end of this year.
• Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Nong Rong, during a meeting with the president, informed Dr Alvi that China would provide six million doses of vaccine this week, while 100m more doses would be provided by the end of the year, said an official press release issued by the Presidency.
• During the meeting, Pakistan and China reaffirmed their resolve to further boost bilateral cooperation in various fields for the mutual benefit of the two countries.


4. Flagship PN drill Shamsheer-i-Bahr begins

• Pakistan Navy war game Shamsheer-i-Bahr VIII commenced here on August 9, 2021.
• Described as the flagship drill of the navy, Shamsheer-i-Bahr VIII is held biennially to corroborate various concepts which are validated in subsequent maritime exercises prior to being incorporated in naval strategy.
• Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Mohammed Amjad Khan Niazi graced the opening ceremony of the exercise as chief guest. He was received by Vice Admiral Faisal Rasul Lodhi


5. AJK presidential election on Aug 17

• The Election Commission of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on August 9, 2021 announced the schedule for the presidential election in AJK, fixing Aug 17 for the polling.
• According to the schedule, nomination papers for the president`s office will be filed before the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) in his office in Muzaffarabad from 10am to 12noon on Aug 12, to be scrutinised by the commission the same day.
• Withdrawal of nomination papers can take place until 11:30am on August 16 while voting will be held on August 17 from 10am to 2pm.


6. Trilateral deal signed for collection of Balochistan receipts

• A tripartite agreement was signed on August 9, 2021 between the Finance Department of Balochistan, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and 1-Link (Private) Limited for collection of provincial receipts, including sales tax, fees and levies in the province.
• As per the agreement, the collection of provincial receipts would be made through the Alternative Delivery Channels (ADCs) for online tax collection.
• The signing ceremony of the agreement was held at the committee room of the Finance Department in the Civil Secretariat


7. UN sounds terrifying warning on climate change

• We ignored the warnings, and now it`s too late: global heating has arrived with a vengeance and will see Earth`s average temperature reach 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels around 2030, a decade earlier than projected only three years ago, according to a landmark UN assessment published on August 9, 2021.
• The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) bombshell landing 90 days before a key climate summit desperate to keep 1.5C in play says the threshold will be breached around 2050, no matter how aggressively humanity draws down carbon pollution.


8. Taliban seize another provincial capital without a fight

• The Taliban seized a sixth Afghan provincial capital on August 9, 2021 following a weekend blitz across the north that saw urban centres fall in quick succession and the government struggle to keep the militants at bay.
• Insurgents entered Aibak without a fight after community elders pleaded with officials to spare the city from more violence following weeks of clashes on the outskirts, said Sefatullah Samangani, deputy governor of Samangan province.
• `The governor accepted and withdrew all the forces from the city,` Samangani added, saying the Taliban were now in `full control`.


9. Gunmen kill BJP member, his wife in held Kashmir

• Assailants fatally shot a husband and wife who were both politicians for India`s governing party in held Kashmir, police said, blaming rebels fighting against Indian rule for the attack.
• Police said armed men entered the home of Ghulam Rasool Dar in southern Anantnag town on August 9, 2021 and fired at him and his wife. Doctors declared them dead at a hospital.
• Dar was the local president of the governing Bharatiya Janata Party`s farmers wing. Both he and his wife were village council members.


10. Shakib stars as Australia hit new low in T20 Internationals

• All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan took four wickets as Bangladesh skittled out Australia for their lowest ever Twenty20 International total of 62 to seal the series 4-1 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on August 9, 2021.
• Chasing 123 for victory, the visitors crashed out in 13.4 overs with Shakib returning figures of 4-9 with his left-arm spin in the 60-run rout in Dhaka.
• Australia`s previous lowest was 79 all out against England at Southampton in 2005.
