1. Pakistan LNG to provide KE gas for new plant

• The state owned Pakistan LNG Ltd (PLL) and private power utility K-Electric on August 10, 2021 signed a formal agreement under which the former would supply 150 million cubic feet per day of regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) to the KE`s upcoming 900-megawatt power plant at Bin Qasim.
• The gas supply agreement (GSA) was signed by KE Chief Executive Officer Moonis Alvi and PLL Chief Executive Masood Nabi.
• Energy Minister Hammad Azhar, SAPM on Power and Petroleum Tabish Gauhar and Petroleum Secretary Dr Arshad Mahmood also attended the signing ceremony


2. US warns Taliban against taking power by force

• A US peace envoy brought a warning to the Taliban on August 10, 2021 that any government that comes to power through force in Afghanistan would not be recognised internationally after a series of cities fell to the militant group in stunningly quick succession.
• Zalmay Khalilzad, the US envoy, travelled to Doha, Qatar, where the Taliban maintain a political office, to tell the group that there was no point in pursuing victory on the battlefield because a military takeover of Kabul would guarantee they would be seen as pariahs.
• He and others hope to persuade Tabban leaders to return to peace talks with the Afghan government as American and Nato forces finish their pullout from the country. The insurgents have captured seven out of 34 provincial capitals in the country in less than a week


3. AJK PM replaces principal secretary

• Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Prime Minister Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi on August 10, 2021 replaced his principal secretary and the senior additional secretary in his secretariat besides making one more transfer and posting in what was the first but brief bureaucratic reshuffle after the installation of the PTI government.
• Ehsan Khalid Kiani, a BS-22 officer of the AJK administrative service (AJKA S), who had been serving as principal secretary to the prime minister since May last year was transferred and attached with the Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD) for further adjustment.


4. Alyani lays foundation stone of Winder Dam

• Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan Alyani on August 10, 2021 laid the foundation stone of the Winder Dam.
• The project was approved in 2011 and then president Asif Ali Zardari performed its ground-breaking, but work on it has yet to start.
• The irrigation department`s officials gave a briefing to Chief Minister Alyani on the dam project and told him that it would be completed in four years at a cost of Rs15,230.76 million


5. PIA to start Rapid PCR tests at Sialkot airport

• Following restrictions from the UAE authorities regarding Covid-19 Rapid PCR/RTPCR tests, the Pakistan International Airline will start Rapid PCR tests at the Sialkot International Airport for passengers of Dubai-bound flights.
• A PIA spokesman said that the national flag carrier has arranged special flights from Sialkot to Dubai on Aug 12 and 14 and Rapid PCR tests of passengers will be conducted at the Sialkot airport. He said in view of the tests, passengers are requested to arrive at the airport at least 5 hours in advance


6. Lucky gets permission to set up assembly plant for Samsung mobile devices

• The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has formally allowed Samsung, a South Korean electronics giant, to start production of its mobile phone devices in the country through its local partner Lucky Motor Corporation Ltd.
• The PTA on Tuesday issued a Mobile Device Manufacturing (MDM) authorisation to Lucky Motor to set up an assembly plant in Karachi for producing Korean mobile devices.
• The PTA has so far issued around 25 MDM authorisations to foreign and local companies for the production of mobile devices (2G/3G/4G)


7. Taliban seize seventh Afghan provincial capital

• The Taliban seized another Afghan provincial capital on August 10, 2021 the seventh in less than a week as tens of thousands of people fled their homes in the north for the relative safety of Kabul and other centres.
• A provincial lawmaker said the insurgents had taken Farah city, capital of the same-named province in western Afghanistan, while a Taliban spokesman posted pictures of fighters walking casually past the gates of the police headquarters and governor`s office.
• Shabla Abubar, a member of Farah`s provincial council, said local security forces retreated towards an army base outside the city


8. India evacuates citizens from Afghanistan

• India sent a military plane to northern Afghanistan on August 10, 2021 to pull out its citizens, officials said, as fighting raged between Afghan security forces and the advancing Taliban.
• The Indian government shut its consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif, the biggest city in the north, and urged its diplomats and Indian citizens to take the special flight home. India, which has invested millions of dollars in development projects across Afghanistan, has now closed all its consulates, leaving only the embassy in Kabul operational, a government official said


9. Queen Elizabeth`s son sued in NY court for alleged abuse

• Queen Elizabeth IPs second son, Prince Andrew, was sued in a New York court on August 09, 2021 for alleged sexual abuse of a woman who says she was `lent out` for underage sex by late US financier Jeffrey Epstein.
• The filing at the US district court in Manhattan said Virginia Giuffre was the plaintiff in the case against the defendant, named as `Prince Andrew, Duke of York.` Giuffre alleged in the filing that she `was regularly abused by Epstein and was lent out by Epstein to other powerful men for sexual purposes.


10. New York Governor Cuomo resigns after harassment claims

• New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, facing possible impeachment over sexual harassment claims from 11 women and mounting pressure to quit from fellow Democrats, announced his resignation on August 10, 2021.
• It was a stunning reversal of fortune for the 63-year-old Cuomo, who just a year ago earned praise for his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic before being engulfed in the harassment allegations and claims that he covered up the scale of deaths in nursing homes.
• `I think that given the circumstances, the best way I can help now is if I step aside and let government get back to government,` Cuomo said in a live televised address.
