1. Evacuations go on after chaos kills seven at Kabul airport

• A day after seven people were killed in a crush at the gates of Kabul airport, the Taliban fired into the air and used batons on August 22, 2021 to force people desperate to flee Afghanistan to form orderly queues there, as the militant group said its fighters were heading to the northern Panjshir valley to take on thousands of forces opposed to them.
• There were no major injuries as armed men beat back the crowds, according to witnesses, and Washington said it was now able to get large numbers of Americans into the airport.
• Britain`s defence ministry said seven Afghans were killed in the crush around the airport on Saturday as thousands tried to get a flight out, a week after the Islamist militants took control of the country.


2. Educational institutes in Sindh to remain closed indefinitely

• As the number of hospitalised Covid-19 patients has increased by almost three folds in the past 45 days, the Sindh government has decided that educational institutes in the province will remain closed till their staff is vaccinated.
• Meanwhile, a consignment of two million doses of vaccine reached Pakistan from China on August 22, 2021.
• While 3,842 were infected with coronavirus and 75 others lost their lives in a single day, national positivity rate remained at 7.1 per cent


3. Hekmatyar asks India not to meddle in Afghan affairs

• Former Afghan prime minister and Hizb-i-Islami (HI) chief Gulbuddin Hekmatyar has appreciated Pakistan`s efforts for peaceful settlement of the Afghan conflict and asked India not to fight Kashmir war from Afghan soil.
• `New Delhi should focus on its internal issues instead of issuing statements regarding the future of Afghanistan,` said Hekmatyar while talking to media in Kabul.
• He said New Delhi should respect sovereignty of Afghanistan. He was appreciative of the efforts of Prime Minister Imran Khan as well for his stance on a peaceful and negotiated settlement of the Afghan issue. Hekmatyar expressed the hope that soon there would be a government in Kabul, which would be acceptable to the Afghan people and the international community


4. Covid deaths set record in Iran after lifting of restrictions

• Iran`s health ministry on August 22, 2021 reported more than 680 daily Covid deaths for the first time, as nationwide restrictions to contain the spread of the virus were lifted.
• The ministry said the deaths of 684 people in the past 24 hours brought the total number of fatalities to 102,038.
• Iran also registered 36,419 new infections raising the total since the pandemic started to 4,677,114


5. Malaysia`s new PM strikes conciliatory tone in first address

• Malaysia`s new Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob struck a conciliatory tone in his first national address on August 22, 2021, saying he would embrace the opposition in an effort to tackle the runaway pandemic and revive a slumping economy.
• A day after being sworn in, Ismail said the political battles that led to a change of government twice since 2018 elections had been detrimental to the country and distressed the public.
• Let us move forward. Let us stem this grab for political power, he said, urging all lawmakers to find common ground and work together to help the nation recover.


6. Kamala Harris begins Asia trip, to give reassurances amid Afghan debacle

• Vice President Kamala Harris began a trip to Asia on August 22, 2021 where she will offer reassurances of Washington`s commitment to the region after the chaotic US pullout from Afghanistan and Taliban takeover. `The vice president will make clear throughout the trip that we do have an enduring commitment to the region,` said a senior US official.
• Harris, an Asian-American whose mother was of Indian origin, landed in Singapore Sunday and will start her activities on Monday by meeting the city-state`s leaders


7. We don`t want Afghan militants in Russia: Putin

• President Vladimir Putin on August 22, 2021 rejected the idea of sending people evacuation from Afghanistan to countries near Russia, saying he did not want `militants showing up here under cover of refugees`, Russian news agencies reported.
• Putin criticised an idea of some Western countries to relocate refugees from Afghanistan to neighbouring Central Asian countries while their visas to the United States and Europe are being processed.
• `Does that mean that they can be sent without visas to those countries, to our neighbours, while they themselves (the West) don`t want to take them without visas?` TASS news agency quoted Putin as telling leaders of the ruling United Russia party


8. Israel bombs Gaza after border clashes

• Israeli warplanes bombed Gaza on August 22, 2021 after clashes between its troops and Palestinian protesters left dozens injured, including an Israeli border policeman and a 13-yearold Palestinian boy who were both critically wounded.
• The Israeli military said it carried out air strikes against four `weapons sites` and that it had reinforced its Gaza division with additional troops.
• The escalation came exactly three months since Israel and the enclave`s rulers Hamas reached a truce following their deadliest fighting in years


9. Turkish bombing kills two in Iraq

• Two civilians were killed on August 22, 2021 in Iraq`s northern Kurdistan region by a Turkish army bombardment as forces battled the Kurdistan Workers` Party (PKK) rebels, local officials said.
• Turkey regularly targets northwest Iraq in operations against the PKK, which Ankara considers a terrorist organisation.
• The Kurdish separatists have waged a decades-long insurgency against Turkey, and maintain bases in the rugged mountains across the border in Iraq. The latest violence comes six days before a regional summit in Baghdad


10. Country rock pioneer Don Everly dies at 84

• US country rock pioneer Don Everly, who was the surviving half of the Everly Brothers, has died aged 84 after a career delighting fans with a string of hits such as `Bye Bye Love` and `Wake Up Little Susie.
• His death in the music hub of Nashville, Tennessee was announced by the Country Music Hall of Fame, which called him `one of the most talented and impactful artists in popular music history.` No cause of death was provided.
• Tributes from the music world were led by Carole King, Roy Orbison Jr and Julian Lennon, who tweeted: `R.I.P. Don Of `The Everly Brothers` who along with his brother Phil, wrote some of the most memorable & classic songs of all time… Thank You for the Music
