August 31, 2021: National / International Current Affairs

1. Govt debt up by 22pc to Rs38.7tr in two years

• The central government`s total debt has increased by 21.7 per cent to Rs38.7 trillion during the last two years with a major rise in domestic debt.
• The data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on August 31, 2021 showed that during the past couple of years, the government`s domestic and external debts stood at Rs38.69tr at the end of the fiscal FY21 compared to Rs31.78tr in FY19.
• The debts in FY20 were Rs35.1tr.
• The external debt (in terms of rupees) did not show much difference as it rose to Rs12.42tr compared to Rs11.055tr in FY19

2. President Alvi to address parliament on Sept 13

• President Dr Arif Alvi will address a joint sitting of parliament on Sept 13 which will formally mark the beginning of the fourth parliamentary year of the present National Assembly.
• The decision to convene the joint sitting of the two houses of parliament for the constitutionally mandatory presidential address was made at a meeting between Adviser to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan and National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser here on August 30, 2021.
• Federal Minister for InterProvincial Coordination and former NA speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza and federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar also joined the meeting in which the new calendar for the fourth parliamentary year was also reviewed, according to an official handout issued by the NA Secretariat

3. Troops from Kabul exit via Islamabad

• The exit from Afghanistan of Nato personnel and those of its allied countries has gained momentum, while about 3,500 foreigners evacuated from the neighbouring country are staying in various Islamabad hotels, it emerged on August 30, 2021.
• The airport has seen several special flights leaving for cities in the Middle East and Europe. A flight carrying 106 Nato troops left for Belgium on Monday afternoon. Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan told Dawn that 13,500 foreigners evacuated from Afghanistan have arrived in Pakistan since the Taliban gained control of Kabul, with 3,500 residing in various hotels in Islamabad

4. 16 members of AJK cabinet allotted portfolios

• Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Prime Minister Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi on August 30, 2021 allotted portfolios to his 16-member cabinet, in exercise of his powers under rule 3 (4) of the Rules of Business, 1985.
• All but one of these 16 ministers was appointed by Mr Niazi on Thursday, three weeks after assuming the office of prime minister.
• According to a notification, issued by the Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD), physical planning and housing (PPH) and tourism were allotted to Sardar Tanvir Ilyas, the senior minister; local government and rural development (LG&RD) was given to Khawaja Farooq Ahmed; agriculture, animal husbandry, dairy development, irrigation and small dams were allotted to Sardar Mir Akbar, who held the lucrative portfolio of forests during the past five years of the PML-N government

5. Denmark to help Pakistan check human trafficking

• The Danish government on August 30, 2021 signed a $1.6 million partnership agreement with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), a UN migration agency in Pakistan, which would assist Pakistan in building capacity to check human trafficking.
• Under the agreement, Denmark will provide funds to implement a comprehensive and coordinated response to combat trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants in Pakistan.
• The partnership agreement was signed by Danish ambassador Lis Rosenholm and IOM Chief of Mission in Pakistan Mio Sato, at the Danish Embassy in Islamabad.

6. 12m Sinovac doses received in four days

• As Pakistan received 12 million doses of Sinovac vaccine during the last four days, 66 patients lost their battle against Covid-19.
• A total of 3,800 more people got infected in a single day.
• According to data of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the number of active cases was recorded at 93,690, with 6,150 patients admitted to hospitals across the country.
• As many as 532 ventilators were in use, with Multan and Lahore reporting a 50 per cent occupancy ratio while four cities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Swabi, Swat, Abbottabad and Peshawar -utilising over 50pc oxygenated beds on Monday, the data revealed

7. World passes threshold of 4.5m Covid deaths

• The world passed the grim threshold of 4.5 million Covid-19 deaths on August 30, 2021 as the virulent Delta variant wreaked havoc globally.
• Since the outbreak emerged in China in December 2019, the virus has killed a total of 4,500,620 people, the tally of official sources revealed.
• Some 10,000 deaths are reported every day in the world, a much lower figure than the highs of January when an average of 14,800 people were being killed daily.
• But the figure is much higher than at the start of July when some 7,800 daily deaths were registered.

8. Renewed activity at N. Korea`s N-reactor `deeply troubling`, says IAEA

• North Korea appears to have restarted a nuclear reactor that is widely believed to have produced plutonium for nuclear weapons, the UN atomic watchdog said in an annual report, highlighting the isolated nation`s efforts to expand its arsenal.
• The signs of operation at the 5-megawatt (MW) reactor, which is seen as capable of producing weapons-grade plutonium, were the first to be spotted since late 2018, the International Atomic Energy Agency said in its report.

9. Palestinian president, Israeli defence minister hold rare talks

• Israel`s defence minister met Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas for a rare high level meeting, but a source close to Prime Minister Naftali Bennett insisted his government had no plans to reboot peace talks.
• Defence Minister Benny Gantz met Abbas in Ramallah for what were reportedly the first direct talks between an Israeli cabinet member and the 86-year-old Palestinian leader in several years.
• The meeting, which Gantz`s office said focused on `security policy, civilian and economic issues`, came just hours after Bennett returned from Washington where he met US President Joe Biden

10. US forces leave Afghanistan after 20 years

• The United States said on August 30, 2021 it had completed the withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan following a chaotic airlift nearly 20 years after it had invaded the country in the wake of the Sept 11, 2001, attacks.
• More than 122,000 people have been flown out of Kabul since Aug 14, the day before the Taliban regained control of the country.
• The chief US diplomat in Afghanistan, Ross Wilson, was on the last C-17 flight out, Marine General Frank McKenzie, the head of US Central Command, told a Pentagon news briefing
