1. Amid decline in virus cases, govt opens up country

• The National Coordination Committee (NCC) on Covid-19 on August 6, 2020 decided to lift restrictions on tourism sector from Aug 8 and on restaurants and transport sector from Aug 10 and gave a timetable for opening some other sectors, including educational institutions and marriage halls.
• A meeting of the NCC presided over by Prime Minister Imran Khan and attended by representatives of all the provinces also decided to lift restrictions on railways, airlines and metro buses. However, restrictions on the number of people allowed to travel by trains, planes and buses and the mandatory gap between the passengers will remain in place till September. These will be lifted by October if the situation allowed.
• These restrictions were enforced on March 16 to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the country

2. Parliament okays another FATF-related law

• After hectic two-day consultations with the country`s two major opposition parties, the coalition government led by the Pakistan Tehreeki-Insaf (PTI) on August 5, 2020 finally managed to get the third FATF-related bill for exchange of information and criminals with countries passed in the joint sitting of parliament after agreeing to include more than two dozen opposition proposed amendments with a majority vote amidst noisy protest by the religious and nationalist parties.
• The talks between the government and the leadersof the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) on the 28-clause Mutual Legal Assistance (Criminal Matter) Bill, 2020, the third one to meet some of the conditions of the Financial Action Tasl( Force (FATF) against terrorism, which started on Wednesday evening, continued almost throughout the night and lasted till a delayed start of the joint sitting on August 6, 2020 evening, finally became successful when the government presented a set of amendments to the opposition containing their proposed changes, including a number of steps to prevent possible misuse of the law and to ensure parliamentary oversight over its implementation

3. All airports allowed to handle domestic flight operations

• The Aviation Division has announced that the domestic flight operation, already under way from some of the airports for some time, will be resorted from all airports in the country from August 6 midnight.
• The government had earlier allowed all airports, except Turbat, Pangjur, Dalbandin, Zhob, Pasni, Moenjo Daro, Nawabshah and Bahawalpur airports, to resume domestic flight operations.
• In this connection, the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) issued a formal notice which said that the previous notice banning domestic flights has now been cancelled.

4. TikTok upgrades guidelines, releases Urdu version

• After warnings and negotiations with the telecom regulator, global short funny video platform TikTok has not only upgraded its `Community Guidelines`, but also released its Urdu language version for the first time.
• The upgraded Community Guidelines provide general guidance on `what is and what is not` allowed on the platform to keep TikTok a safe place for creativity and joy. The platform is now localised and will work in accordance with local laws and norms.
• TikTok( has taken measures for making its teams able to remove content that violates the Community Guidelines and suspend or ban accounts involved in severe or repeated violations

5. Parliament rejects changing of Kashmir`s special status

• As a joint sitting of parliament in a unanimous resolution on August 6, 2020 reiterated its complete rejection of India`s illegal and unilateral act on of changing the special status of occupied Kashmir on Aug 5 last year, Prime Minister Imran Khan lauded the UN Security Council for its latest meeting on the disputed matter.
• In a series of tweets, Mr Khan said: `I welcome the UNSC for again taking up the Jammu & Kashmir dispute, which has been on its agenda for over 70 yrs. The UNSC, under the UN Charter, not only has the responsibility for maintaining international peace & security but also of ensuring implementation of its resolutions.
• `We thank the Council members who expressed concern over the deteriorating human rights & humanitarian situation in IIOJK, advised against escalation of tensions, underscored the need for respecting international law & called for a peaceful resolution of the dispute

6. Occupied Kashmir gets new lieutenant governor

• India`s federal government named a former telecoms minister on August 6, 2020 to lead the restive region of Occupied Kashmir, where it has imposed new restrictions in the name of efforts aimed at stopping the spread of Covid-19.
• Manoj Sinha, a leader in Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s ruling party, will replace career bureaucrat G.C. Murmu as lieutenant governor of Jammu and Kashmir, a government statement said.
• The appointment came a day after authorities ensured that the first anniversary of the revocation of the disputed region`s constitutional autonomy passed off without any major street protests amid heavy deployment of police and restrictions on public movement

7. US Senate votes to ban TikTok on govt phones

• The US Senate voted on August 6, 2020 to bar TikTok from being downloaded onto government employees` telephones, intensifying US scrutiny of the popular Chinese-owned video app.
• The bill passed by the Republican controlled Senate now goes to the House of Representatives, led by Democrats.
• `TikTok is a major security risk and has no place on government devices,` said Republican Senator Josh Hawley, the sponsor of the bill

8. Rajapaksas` party heads for two-thirds majority

• The ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) was cruising to a big victory in the island nation`s parliamentary election, early results received on August 6, 2020 evening showed.
• The SLPP, established by former president and current Premier Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brothers three years ago, has now emerged as the kingmaker in contemporary Lankan politics, decimating the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). The party neither contested last year`s presidential election nor Wednesday`s parliamentary election

9. Raphael`s face reconstructed to solve mystery

• An sleuths have created a 3D reconstruction of the face of Italian painter Raphael, solving an age-old mystery over his final resting place, Rome`s Tor Vergata University said on August 6, 2020.
• The artist, a child prodigy and part of a trinity of Renaissance greats along with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, died in 1520, aged only 37. A red rose graces his tomb in Rome`s Pantheon all year round.
• His body was exhumed in the 19th century, at which point a plaster cast of his skull was made

10. Sadia Dehlvi dies at 63

• Filmmaker and writer Sadia Dehlvi passed away in New Delhi on August 5, 2020 after a two-year-long battle with breast cancer. Dehlvi was admitted to a hospital recently where she was undergoing treatment. She was 63.
• Dehlvi was born on June 16, 1957, in New Delhi. A Sufi at heart, she often criticised Islam`s radical interpretations and instead called for an inclusive and liberal understanding of the religion.
• Her first book on Sufism, Sufism: The heart of Islam, was published in 2009 by HarperCollins India, which brought her to the limelight.
