1. Prime Minister launches Rs5tr Ravi City project

• Prime Minister Imran Khan has again asked the civil and police bureaucracy to improve governance and root out corruption as it is damaging the country`s economy beyond repair.
• At the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Ravi City project, the prime minister said the PTI government had spent its first two years under most trying times as it had to save the country from default and from the corrupt scampering for an NRO. `They even offered support to the government for the passage of FATF bill as well as the Kashmir issue in return for an NRO, he added.
• He said the Rs5 trillion Ravi City project would create millions of jobs as there were 40 industries connected to the construction sector.


2. WB says cannot mediate in Pakistan-India water dispute

• The World Bank has expressed its inability to take an independent decision on appointment of a neutral expert or court of arbitration for settlement of a long outstanding water dispute between Pakistan and India, saying the two countries will have to bilaterally choose one option.
• `Both India and Pakistan should come together as to which option to take forward,` said Patchamuthu Illangovan, the World Bank`s former Country Director of Pakistan, on completion of his five-year term in Islamabad.
• Talking to Dawn, Mr Illango said Pakistan had made a request for appointment of a Court of Arbitration (COA) while India had sought a neutral expert to resolve their dispute on two hydroelectric projects. Because of two conflicting positions under the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, the World Bank was facilitating the two governments to find ways in resolving differences and move forward


3. Railways removes first woman station manager within hours of posting

• A woman officer from Central Superior Service`s Railways Group couldn`t retain charge of Lahore Station Manager even for a day as a powerful union of station masters allegedly showed severe resistance over her appointment.
• The Pakistan Railways` Administration immediately withdrew the notification of entrusting Syeda Marzia Zehra with the charge of station manager which was in addition to her own responsibility as assistant transportation officer-1 (ATO-1), PR`s Lahore Division, allegedly under pressure of the union.
• `On Friday, the PR administration issued a notification, entrusting Ms Zehra with the charge of Lahore Station Manager. On this, the station masters association (Sampars Union) protested the decision of appointing a CSS officer on the seat of station manager that is meant to be filled temporarily or permanently by the officials of the cadre of station master


4. Govt to resume international flights from all airports on 9th

• The government has granted authorisation to all foreign and domestic airlines to operate flights to and from Pakistan in line with the pre-Covid-19 summer schedule.
• The government was pleased to allow all types of international and domestic flight operations to and from all airports across Pakistan as per authorisation granted to all foreign and domestic operators pre-Covid-19 summer schedule 2020, including cargo and special flight operations, with effect from Aug 9 at 11.59pm.
• However, he said these operations had to be conducted in accordance with the established guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued from time to time


5. Brig Shujah Hassan appointed PSM chief

• The federal government on August 7, 2020 appointed retired Brig Shujah Hassan as new chief executive officer of the Pakistan Steel Mills.
• A notification issued by the Establishment Division says the appointment of Shujah Hassan will be for one year with immediate effect and until further orders. However, the appointment is subject to termination on one month`s notice by either side, it says.
• Brig Hassan`s name had been shortlisted by the PSM board of directors on the grounds that he has demonstrated strong commitment to supporting the government`s vision to review the country`s largest industrial unit. Following an advertisement published in November last year, five candidates were called for interview, but only three appeared.
• This is the first time since 2016 that a full time PSM chief executive officer has been appointed by the federal government.


6. Ex-Fata to get first child protection court today

• The first child protection court in the merged tribal districts will be virtually inaugurated by Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth in Ghalanai area here today (August 8, 2020).
• Khyber Pakhtunkhwa already has three of the six such courts functioning in the country.
• They have been established in Peshawar, Mardan and Abbottabad under the KP Child Protection and Welfare Act, 2010, and Juvenile Justice System Act, 2018


7. NA body clears two FATF-related bills as Hafeez shows up

• The Prime Minister`s Adviser on Finance, Hafeez Shaikh, made his debut at a parliamentary panel meeting on August 7, 2020, watching the body clear two government bills relating to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
• However, the opposition blocked a crucial bill, on measures against money laundering, as it envisaged what it called a `suspicious` role for the controversial National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
• The National Assembly`s committee on finance had declined to take up the government`s legislative business over absence of Mr Shaikh since he joined the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf led government in April last year


8. Mahathir to set up political party at age 95

• Malaysia`s Mahathir Mohamad, 95, said on August 7, 2020 he was setting up a new political party as he seeks to take on the government, months after he quit as premier and his administration collapsed.
• Mahathir, the world`s oldest leader until his resignation in February, first entered parliament as an MP in 1964 and had two stints as prime minister, totalling a quarter of a century.
• But far from quietly retiring, the spry nonagenarian has continued to challenge the legitimacy of the leader who replaced him, and on Friday announced the new party


9. Trump announces restrictions against Chinese giants TikTok, WeChat

• US President Donald Trump has announced sweeping restrictions against Chinese-owned social media giants TikTok and WeChat, his latest explosive move aimed at countering China`s rising global power.
• Trump on August 6, 2020 signed executive orders giving Americans 45 days to stop doing business with the Chinese platforms, effectively setting a deadline for a potential pressured sale of viral video sensation TikTok to Microsof t.
• The president cited national security concerns for the moves, which also threw into doubt the American operations of WeChat`s parent firm, Tencent, an uber-powerful player in the video gaming industry and one of the world`s richest companies


10. Australia to host T20 World Cup in 2022, women`s WC put off

• Australia will host this year`s postponed Twenty20 World Cup in 2022 with India retaining their tournament next year, the sport`s governing International Cricket Council (ICC) said on August 7, 2020.
• The ICC also confirmed the women`s 50-over World Cup that was scheduled to be held in New Zealand in February March next year has been postpone d to 2022 following the impact of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
• `We now have absolute clarity on the future of ICC events, enabling all of our members to focus on the rescheduling of lost international and domestic cricket,` ICC chief executive Manu Sawhney said. `We will now proceed as planned with the men`s T20 World Cup 2021 in India and host the 2022 edition in Australia.
