1. MoU signed with IPPs to cut cost: minister

• Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz has said that provision of cheap electricity to consumers on a sustainable basis is the government`s top priority.
• Addressing a news conference along with Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Power Shahzad Qasim on August 15, 2020, the minister said that as a first major step towards providing cheap electricity to consumers, the government signed a basic agreement with Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
• Senator Faraz said expensive power contracts had been signed in the past, as the previous governments had failed to negotiate with the IPPs for the benefit of consumers. However, he said, it was not possible for the present government to undo the contracts unilaterally though Prime Minister Imran Khan wanted to address the issue of expensive electricity on an immediate basis


2. SC bars govt from using words offensive to persons with disabilities

• The Supreme Court has ordered the federal and provincial governments to discontinue the use of words like `disabled`, `physically handicapped` and `mentally retarded` in official correspondence as these words offend the dignity of physically-challenged people.
• Instead, such persons should be identified as `persons with disabilities` or `persons with different abilities`, observed the Supreme Court in a judgment authored by Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah.
• Justice Shah was member of a three-judge SC bench headed by Justice Manzoor Ahmed Malil( which had taken up an appeal moved by Malik Ubaidullah against the Dec 2, 2014 judgement of the Lahore High Court (LHC)


3. PEMRA issues first teleport licence

• The launch of a teleport company in the country is likely to provide cost-effective relay solutions to electronic media and upgraded telecast quality to viewers.
• Almost two years after the introduction of the Teleport Licence policy by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), the first teleport licence has been issued to a Karachi-based firm TeleNest (SMC) Pvt Ltd.
• TeleNest CEO Mehdi Raza has informed PEMRA about the progress made regarding development of a cost-effective and reliable broadcast management system along with a modern uplink station which would facilitate broadcaster and content producers not only in Pakistan but also in the region


4. Chairman CPEC Authority announces Internship Programme for youth

• The CPEC Authority has launched CPEC Internship Programme to provide opportunities to Pakistan’s talented youth to develop skills and have experience in various fields.
• Chairman CPEC Authority General (Retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa announced it on August 15, 2020.
• He said, “in the spirit of youth empowerment and to develop young leaders, we announce to offer an opportunity to the youth to join CPEC specific internship for three months.” Asim Saleem Bajwa said it was an inclusive national project and an engine of growth


5. Indian Freedom Day observed as Black Day

• A unique kind of ceremony to mark Indian Independence Day today as Black Day was observed with its flags and portrait of Narendar Modi, Indian Premier, were burnt on August 15, 2020.
• The ceremony was organised by Pakistan Awami Raj (PAR) Party at Noor Hospital Khan Garh. PAR central leader Dr Abdur Rasheed Sheikh, Chairman Punjab Lawyers Front Rana Amjad, president of Supreme Lawyers Forum Haris Khan, president United Citizen Front Rana Sohail, Muhammad Sohaib Shafee, Malik Mahboob and others said Indian fascism had been exposed to entire world.


6. Muslim woman accuses firm of bias

• A Muslim woman who worked for a McDonald`s franchisee in the US state of Maryland has accused managers and co-workers of sexually harassing her and subjecting her to religious discrimination after she converted to Islam.
• Diamond Powell, 28, of Baltimore, sued her former employer, Susdewitt Management of Lanham, Maryland, with the backing of attorneys from the Council on American Islamic Relations, a Muslim civil rights group.
• The Morgan State University graduate was Christian in 2016 when she started working for the company, which operated two McDonald`s locations at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Powell converted to Islam in February 2017 and began wearing a hijab to work


7. Setback for US as UNSC rejects proposal to extend Iran arms ban

• The UN Security Council has rejected a US proposal to extend the conventional weapons embargo on Iran, causing US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo to accuse the world body of making an `inexcusable` mistake.
• This week, the US tabled a resolution in the Security Council, asking it to roll over the existing embargo indefinitely. Under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal the embargo is due to expire on Oct 18.
• The Trump administration exited the nuclear deal in May 2018, but it wants the UN to uphold a procedure incorporated in the agreement


8. Security officials were wrongly appointed, says US body

• The two most senior officials in the US Department of Homeland Security were improperly appointed to the posts under federal law by the Trump administration, a nonpartisan congressional watchdog said.
• The Government Accountability Office says acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf and his acting deputy, Ken Cuccinelli, are ineligible to run the agency under the Vacancy Reform Act.
• It was not immediately clear what effects the determination would have on DHS, an agency that has acting officials in a number of prominent roles and is at the forefront of key administration initiatives on immigration and law enforcement.


9. Dhoni quits international cricket, to play IPL

• Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni quit international cricket on August 15, 2020, drawing curtains on an illustrious, trophy-laden career with a cryptic Instagram message.
• Dhoni burst onto the international scene in a One-day International against Bangladesh in late 2004 as a long-haired wicket-keeper with spectacular power-hitting prowess.
• He went on to become statistically India`s most successful captain, leading them to World Cup triumphs in 2007 (T20), in 2011 (ODI) and ICC Champions Trophy in 2013, while they also became the top ranked Test team under him in 2009.
• As a batsman, Dhoni also transformed himself into one of the best unishers of the game, famously illustrating it by securing India`s 2011World Cup victory by hitting a six in the final against Sri Lanka.
• Overall, Dhoni has amassed 17,000 international runs across formats, including 16 centuries, and more than 800 victims as wicket-keeper


10. World record in men`s 5,000m caps track and field`s return

• Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda was the standout star of the first full Diamond League meet winning the 5,000 metres in 12 minutes, 35.36 seconds to break the world record set in 2004.
