1. Pakistan rejects India`s outburst on Jammu, Kashmir

• Pakistan has `strongly rejected` the Indian statement on Kashmir in reaction to the recent China-Pakistan Foreign Ministers` Strategic Dialogue, terming the comments made by spokesperson of Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Anurag Srivastava `unwarranted and irresponsible`.
• `The (Indian) MEA`s contentions about Jammu and Kashmir being the so-called `integral and inalienable part` of India and an `internal affair` are a laughable fiction, totally contrary to historical and legal facts and in violation of the relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions,` said Foreign Office spokesman Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri on August 23, 2020.

2. Imran declared `Man of the Year among Muslims

• A Jordan-based publication has declared Prime Minister Imran Khan `Man of the Year` in the Muslim world while US Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has been declared `Woman of the Year`.
• In its 11th annual issue, `The Muslim 500: The World`s 500 Most Influential Muslims` has selected Mr Khan because of his various initiatives before and after becoming prime minister, including his efforts for long-lasting peace with India.
• `What is particularly to his credit is that upon taking office in August 2018, Khan made it quite clear that one of his top priorities was to work for a lasting peace with India,` it said

3. 1st Intl virtual conference on hydropower sector on August 25, 2020

• First International Virtual Conference on Pakistan Hydropower Sector would be held on Tuesday (August 25th) aimed at discussing more opportunities to produce cheap and clean energy.
• The Energy update in collaboration with Private Power Board Infrastructure (PPIB), Pakhtunkhwa Electric Development Organization (PEDO) and Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) is organising the conference to be participated by energy experts from within and outside the country through a digital platform, told Chief of Organising Committee Naeem Qureshi.
• MD PPIB Shah Jahan Mirza will be the key-note speaker of the event and other speakers include Adviser to CM KPK on Energy Himayatullah Khan, Minister Power Development Gilgit Balistan M. Ali Khan, CEO PEDO Engr

4. T-054 frigate launched for Pak Navy in China

• The launching ceremony of first ship of Type-054 Class Frigate constructed for Pakistan Navy was held at Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard Shanghai, China.
• Commodore Azfar Humayun (Chief Naval Overseer, China) was the chief guest in presence of China Shipbuilding Trading Co, Ltd. (CSTC) Chairman, Li Hongtao.
• The launching event has been marked as a major milestone in the construction of state-of-the-art Frigate for Pakistan Navy. The Type-054 Class, fitted with latest surface, subsurface, anti-air weapons, combat management system and sensors will be one of the technologically advanced surface platforms of Pakistan Navy Fleet

5. Missing school poses greater risk to children than coronavirus: UK advisers

• The chief medical officers of the United Kingdom have said children should return to school after the summer holidays, warning that missing out on their education posed much bigger risks to them than catching Covid-19.
• The rare joint statement from the top health advisers to the governments of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland represents a boost for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson who has said getting children back to school is a national priority.
• Confidence in the government`s approach to schooling during the coronavirus pandemic took a hit last week when education minister Gavin Williamson was forced into an embarrassing U-turn over examination results

6. Covid can enhance resistance to polio vaccination in Pakistan: report

• The Covid-19 pandemic has had some profoundly serious consequences for children`s health in Pakistan and Afghanistan, noted a report released this weekend by the UN Children`s Fund (UNICEF).
• The document is based on statistics collected from 136 countries that responded to a recent UNICEF survey about socio-economic impact of the viral disease that has killed more than 800,000 people across the globe.
• `Violence prevention and response services have been severely disrupted, leaving children at increased risk of violence, exploitation and abuse,` the surveyors reported

7. With China tensions rising, US joins Taiwan to mark battle anniversary

• Amid rising tensions with Beijing, the de facto US ambassador in Chinese-claimed Taiwan took part on August 23, 2020 for the first time in commemorations of a key military clash and the last time Taiwanese forces joined battle with China on a large scale.
• China has stepped up military activity around the democratic island, moves denounced by Taiwan`s government as an attempt at intimidation to force them to accept Chinese rule.
• Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen laid a wreath and bowed her head in respect at a memorial park on Kinmen island, which sits a few kilometres (miles) off the Chinese metropolis of Xiamen, to mark the 62nd anniversary of the start of the second Taiwan Straits crisis

8. Kuwait to rebuild Lebanon`s only large grain silo

• Kuwait said it will rebuild Lebanon`s only large grain silo that was destroyed by the massive Beirut port explosion, raising fears of food shortages in a country already in financial meltdown.
• The destruction of the 120,000-tonne capacity structure at the port, the main entry point for food imports, meant buyers must rely on smaller private storage facilities for their wheat purchases with no government reserves to fall back on.
• Kuwait`s ambassador to Lebanon, Abdulaal al-Qenaie, said in comments to local radio VdL at the weekend that the silo was first built in 1969 with a Kuwaiti development loan

9. Celebrity comet Neowise close-up snapped by Hubble

• NASA Hubble Space Telescope images of comet NEOWISE, taken recently, zero in on the visitor’s coma, the gossamer shell of gas and dust that surrounds its nucleus as it is heated by the Sun.
• This is the first time Hubble has photographed a comet of this brightness at such resolution after this close of a pass by the Sun.
• The comet photos were taken after NEOWISE skimmed closest to the Sun on July 3, 2020, at a distance of 27 million miles (43 million kilometers). Other comets often break apart due to thermal and gravitational stresses at such close encounters, but Hubble’s view shows that apparently NEOWISE’s solid nucleus stayed intact.

10. Zaheer Abbas inducted into ICC Hall of Fame

• Former Pakistan Test great Zaheer Abbas has thanked the International Cricket Council (ICC) for including him in the illustrious club of Hall of Fame.
• Zaheer, nicknamed the `Asian Bradman` in honour of Australia`s Don Bradman, scored four double centuries, two each against England and India during his career spanning from 1969 to 1985. He is also the only Asian batsman who has scored more than 100 centuries in his Test and First-class career (108).
• Widely regarded as Test cricket`s greatest batsman of all time, Zaheer scored 12 centuries and 20 fifties in 78 Tests and seven centuries and 13 half-centuries in 62 One-day Internationals .
