August 25, 2020: National / International Current Affairs

1. NA passes two more FATF-related bills

• Through a well-planned strategy and with covert support of opposition parties, the government on August 24, 2020 managed to get two more FATF related bills, including the Anti-Money Laundering (Second Amendment) Bill, passed from the National Assembly after a heated debate on the role of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
• The assembly also passed the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Waqf Properties Bill, besides approving the Companies (Amendment) Bill and the Limited Liability Partnership Bill which had already been passed by it last month, but the Senate later approved them with some changes.
• The government had come to the house with full preparations which was evident from the attendance of the treasury members and a rare presence of almost all members of the federal cabinet, thus leaving no room for the opposition to create any difficulty for it during the passage of the bills


2. Talks with visiting Taliban team today

• A delegation from Afghan Taliban`s Qatar-based political office arrived here on August 24, 2020 for talks on issues impeding the start of the intra-Afghan dialogue for ending the 19-year-old conflict in Afghanistan.
• The delegation led by Mullah Baradar, the director of the political office and Taliban`s deputy emir responsible for political affairs, is leading the delegation, which is here on the invitation of the foreign ministry.
• Baradar spent nearly eight years in the custody of Pakistani security agencies before he was set free in 2018 on the US request for facilitating the Afghan peace process


3. KP cabinet okays Rs3 billion wheat import subsidy to control flour price

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet on August 24, 2020 approved Rs3 billion subsidy on the import of wheat to keep flour price in check across the province. The cabinet held a special meeting with Chief Minister Mahmood Khan in the chair to discuss wheat import through the federal government.
• The meeting was attended by provincial ministers, advisers and special assistants to the chief minister, chief secretary and administrative secretaries.
• A statement issued here said the cabinet decided that in the first phase, the provincial government would immediately import 0.15 metric tons of wheat through the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) at the cost of Rs8.5 billion to ensure smooth supply of wheat to flour mills and stable flour price


4. PA passes bill to abolish up to 3pc CVT to boost construction industry

• The Sindh Assembly on August 24, 2020 passed unanimously the Sindh Finance (Amendment) Bill 2020 abolishing up to three per cent Capital Value Tax on immovable properties to encourage revival of the construction industry.
• The abolished Section 4 of the SFA had authorised the provincial government to collect up to three per cent tax on the registration or transfer of immovable property of 240 square yards or more.
• The statement of objects and reasons of the bill read: `Government Sindh intends to encourage the construction sector and towards that end it seeks to incentivise the property transactions thereby the revival of construction sector will be ensured but the allied industry will also thrive.


5. Eight security men among 14 killed in Philippines bombings

• At least 14 people were killed and 75 wounded including members of the security forces and civilians in twin bombings on Monday involving a suicide attacker on a southern Philippine island that is a stronghold of Islamist militants, officials said.
• The apparently coordinated attacks happened in Jolo in Muslim majority Sulu, where government backed security forces have long been fighting the Abu Sayyaf group.
• Seven soldiers, a police officer, and six civilians were killed in the two bombings, the first at around midday when an improvised explosive device attached to a motorcycle parked outside a supermarket blew up, Lieutenant General Corleto Vinluan said


6. Trump`s media pugilist Kellyanne Conway steps down

• Kellyanne Conway, a long-serving adviser to President Donald Trump known for sparring with reporters, announced on Sunday she will step down to focus on her family.
• Conway, 53, has been at Trump`s side since day one, managing his 2016 campaign that catapulted the reality TV star into the world`s most powerful office.
• But the past four years of singular loyalty to Trump, including defending him on TV and with informal `gaggles` with the press, have taken a toll on the combative spin doctor who coined the phrase `alternative facts. While she made a name for herself as one of Trump`s sharpest defenders, her husband, prominent Washington lawyer George Conway, is a strident critic of the president, repeatedly and loudly questioning his mental fitness for office


7. Trove of Abbasid Caliphate period gold coins unearthed in Israel

• Israeli youths have unearthed hundreds of gold coins stashed away in a clay vessel for more than a thousand years.
• The treasure was discovered on Aug 18, the Israel Antiquities Authority said on August 24, 2020, by teenagers volunteering at an excavation in central Israel where a new neighbourhood is planned to be built.
• `The person who buried this treasure 1,100 years ago must have expected to retrieve it and even secured the vessel with a nail so that it would not move. We can only guess what prevented him from returning to collect this treasure,` said excavation director Liat Naday-Ziv


8. Pompeo, Netanyahu hopeful more Arab states will forge ties with Israel

• Israel`s prime minister and Washington`s top diplomat voiced hope on August 24, 2020 the Jewish state would soon build ties with more Arab countries, following its landmark move to normalise relations with the United Arab Emirates.
• Benjamin Netanyahu and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who was starting a Mideast tour in Jerusalem, both praised the US-brokered deal as a major step towards stability to the turbulent region.
• `I`m very hopeful that we will see other Arab nations join in this,` said Pompeo, who was also set to visit Sudan, Bahrain and the UAE on his five-day trip


9. New species of cretaceous brittle star discovered

• New fossil species belongs to a group of extant starfish-like creatures living in the deep sea today.
• Paleontologists from the Natural History Museums in Luxembourg and Maastricht have discovered a previously unknown species of brittle star that lived in the shallow, warm sea which covered parts of the present-day Netherlands at the end of the Dinosaur Era.


10. Hadiqa wins ‘Best Jingle’ at 2nd SEPMA Awards

• A beaming Hadiqa Kiyani is delighted with her win for ‘Best Jingle’ at the 2nd Shaan-e-Pakistan Musical Achievements Awards (SEPMA) Awards.
• She sang ‘Abhi Tau Mein Jawan Hoon’ for the CALC advertisement.
