1. Buzdar approves 10 shelter homes in Lahore

• Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar on August 26, 2020 approved the establishment of 10 new shelter homes in rented buildings in the provincial metropolis and asked the official machinery to identify suitable places for the purpose.
• Mr Buzdar chaired a meeting to provide better facilities in shelter homes and said this model would be replicated in other big cities in phases and standard of facilities would also be improved.
• The chief minister also gave in principle approval for setting up Punjab Shelter Homes Authority to oversee the arrangements while the C&W Departments will take care of the buildings.


2. Imran invites Afghan peace chief for talks

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on August 26, 2020 invited Afghan peace chief Dr Abdullah Abdullah to discuss ways for clearing the path to intra-Afghan dialogue.
• Prime Minister Khan, according to his office, called the chairman of Afghan High Council for National Reconciliation, Dr Abdullah Abdullah, and invited him `to visit Pakistan at the earliest to share perspectives on advancing the Afghan peace process and forging closer ties between the two countries` Mr Khan said Pakistan looked forward to the commencement of intra-Afghan talks at the earliest.
• He urged Afghan leaders to seize the historic opportunity for achieving an inclusive political settlement


3. FBR approves Audit Policy 2019

• The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on August 26, 2020 approved Audit Policy 2019 for selection of cases for all three federal taxes using the `Risk Based Audit Management System` (Rams) software.
• The audit policy will pertain to tax year 2018 and apply to persons or classes of persons falling under all or any of the three domestic federal tax statutes including the Income Tax Ordinance 2001, Sales Tax Act 1990, and Federal Excise Act 2005. As per policy, the criteria for selection of cases for all taxes for tax year 2018 would be parametric, the FBR said. Cases will be selected on scientific approach for which Rams has been designed and put in place, the bureau added.


4. Educational institutions likely to be opened in phases

• The Ministry of Federal Education will likely announce the reopening of educational institutions from Sept 15 in phases, following a meeting of education ministers scheduled for Sept 7.
• Although advice from the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) has not yet been given to the education ministry based on which decisions will be made on the segregation of students some NHS ministry officials have also proposed opening primary schools.
• `Surprisingly, there is an opinion from some health officials that primary schools should be opened in the first phase. It is a proposal and not a final decision,` an education ministry official said


5. PM constitutes committee to promote tourism

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on August 26, 2020 constituted the National Coordination Committee on Tourism to implement the National Tourism Strategy, for boosting tourism and creating employment.
• Special Assistant to the PM on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Sayed Zulfikar Abbas Bukhari will be convener of the committee.
• Secretaries or representatives from ministries of industries and production, interior, defence, communications, aviation, religious affairs and inter-faith harmony and climate change, all chiefs or additional secretaries, the chairman of Evacuee Trust Property Board, the deputy governor of the State Bank of Pakistan and the managing director of the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation will be its members


6. Junejo appointed IRSA member from Sindh

• The federal government on Wednesday appointed Zahid Hussain Junejo as member of the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) to represent Sindh in determination and distribution of water share among the provinces.
• In a notification issued by the ministry of water resources, Mr Junejo would act as IRSA member for three years.
• The post had fallen vacant on August 24 on completion of three-year term of Syed Mazhar Ali Shah


7. Women may mount stronger Covid-19 immune response: study

• A new study looking at male and female immune responses to the new coronavirus may shed new light on why men are more likely to become seriously ill with Covid-19, researchers said on August 27, 2020.
• Since early in the pandemic it has been clear that men, particularly older men, are at a far higher risk of dying from the virus than women of a similar age, but scientists have not yet been able to pinpoint exactly why.
• A new study published in the journal Nature noted that globally men account for about 60 percent of deaths from Covid-19 and looked at whether differences in immune responses could explain why


8. Bahrain tells Pompeo it`s committed to creation of Palestinian state

• Bahrain said on August 26, 2020 it was committed to the creation of a Palestinian state in talks with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, implicitly rejecting his push for Arab countries to swiftly normalise ties with Israel.
• Pompeo was in Manama as part of a Middle East trip aimed at forging more links between Israel and the Arab world after a landmark US-brokered deal with the United Arab Emirates.
• The US chief diplomat has said he is hopeful other nations will follow the UAE, which earlier this month became only the third Arab country to agree to establish relations with the Jewish state


9. Greece, Turkey draw in allies in Mediterranean war games

• Greece and its EU allies held war games in the Mediterranean on August 26, 2020 while Turkey conducted drills with the US navy nearby as the row between the two neighbours over gas and maritime borders ratched up another notch.
• The convergence of a growing number of warships on an energy-rich but disputed patch of the sea between Cyprus and Crete came as NATO and a host of European officials called for cooler heads to prevail.
• Greece and Turkey are ancient rivals with a litany of disputes despite both being members of the NATO military alliance


10. British Airways seeks permission to operate flights to Lahore

• After resuming flight operations to Islamabad from the United Kingdom, British Airways (BA) is seeking permission from Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) to start operating flights to Lahore, as a team of experts from the airline visited Allama Iqbal International Airport earlier this week to review arrangements made by the airport management.
• The airline resumed flight operations to Islamabad in August, which had been suspended due to outbreak of the coronavirus.
• `Yes, the British Airways has been seeking permission from PCAA to resume flights to Lahore from the UK as a BA team has visited Allama Iqbal International Airport to review the arrangements made by the airport management,` a senior official from the PCAA said.
