1. FBR collected Rs5.8bn tax from expatriate mobile phones in FY20

• The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has raised more than Rs5.8 billion in the last one year from expatriates and travellers on import of mobile phones under baggage.
• Since July 1, 2019, the government has withdrawn the facility of duty-free mobile handset under the baggage rules from abroad.
• The decision, according to the FBR, was taken following receipt of numerous complaints of the scheme`s misuse.
• Official data available with Dawn show that travellers brought as many as 1,389,707 mobile handsets between in FY20 under the baggage and registered it with Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS).

2. Tourism lost $320bn in pandemic: UN

• The tourism global industry has been devastated by the coronavirus pandemic, with $320 billion lost in exports in the first five months of the year and more than 120 million jobs at risk, the UN chief said.
• Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a policy briefing and video address that tourism is the third-largest export sector of the global economy, behind fuels and chemicals, and in 2019 it accounted for seven per cent of global trade.
• It employs one in every 10 people on Earth and provides livelihoods to hundreds of millions more, he said.

3. 430,000 new domicile certificates issued as India enforces Modi`s `settler` scheme in held Kashmir

• Prime Minister Narendra Modi is changing held Kashmir`s residency laws for the first time since 1947, in a bid to snuff out any challenge to the occupied territory.
• Drawing comparisons with Israel`s `settler` tactics in the Palestinian Territories, Modi`s Hindu nationalist government aims to change the demographic makeup and identity of the Muslim-majority region, critics say.
• The Himalayan former princely state has been split between India and Pakistan since independence from Britain in 1947.
• What has Modi done so far? In the Indian-occupied part a conflict between separatist rebels and government forces has killed tens of thousands since 1989, mostly civilians

4. UAE scraps Israel boycott in new step towards normal ties

• The president of the United Arab Emirates scrapped an economic boycott against Israel, allowing trade and financial agreements between the countries in another key step towards normal ties.
• Israel and the UAE said on Aug 13 they would normalise diplomatic relations in a deal brokered by US President Donald Trump that reshapes the order of Middle East politics from the Palestinian issue to the fight against Iran.
• President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued a decree abolishing a boycott law as part of `the UAE`s efforts to expand diplomatic and commercial cooperation with Israel, leading to bilateral relations by stimulating economic growth and promoting technological innovation,` the WAM news agency said.

5. Indian Army fires pellet guns on Kashmiris to stop Muharram procession

• Armed forces in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) on August 29, 2020 used tear gas and fired pellet guns on mourners as they tried to take out Muharram processions in Srinagar.
• Dozens of people sustained injuries as Indian military fired pellet guns to stop religious gatherings. Images showed people with severe wounds on face and other body parts lying in hospitals.
• Also, Indian troops in their fresh act of state terrorism martyred three more Kashmiri youths in South Kashmir on Saturday, raising the number of the slain youths to seven since Friday. The troops martyred the three youths during a cordon and search operation in Zadoora area of Pulwama district in South Kashmir in the wee hours of Saturday. The troops had martyred four youths during a similar operation in Kiloora area of Shopian district of South Kashmir.

6. Riot in Sweden after anti-Muslim leader banned from rally

• At least 10 people were arrested, and several police officers injured, in violence which broke out in southern Sweden after an anti-Muslim Danish politician was blocked from attending an extremely offensive rally, police said on Saturday.
• Protesters threw stones at police and burned tyres on the streets of Malmo late on Friday, with the violence escalating as the evening wore on, according to police and local media.
• The demonstration of about 300 people was connected to an incident earlier in the day in which protesters burned a copy of the Islamic holy book, police spokesman Rickard Lundqvist told Swedish tabloid Expressen

7. World’s fastest data transmission rate achieved

• Working with two companies, Xtera and KDDI Research, the research team led by Dr. Lidia Galdino (UCL Electronic & Electrical Engineering), achieved a data transmission rate of 178 terabits a second (178,000,000 megabits a second) – a speed at which it would be possible to download the entire Netflix library in less than a second.
• The record, which is double the capacity of any system currently deployed in the world, was achieved by transmitting data through a much wider range of colors of light, or wavelengths, than is typically used in optical fiber.
• (Current infrastructure uses a limited spectrum bandwidth of 4.5THz, with 9THz commercial bandwidth systems entering the market, whereas the researchers used a bandwidth of 16.8THz.).

8. Babar rejoins Somerset for T20 Blast

• Pakistan star batsman Babar Azam will rejoin Somerset for this year`s domestic Twenty20 Blast, the English county announced on August 29, 2020.
• Babar, the world`s top-ranked Twenty20 batsman, was the leading run-scorer in the 2019 edition.
• Babar, currently captaining Pakistan in their T20 series in England after featuring in all three Tests earlier in the tour, had agreed to return to southwest club Somerset before the novel coronavirus (Covid19) pandemic upended cricket schedules around the world.

9. Singer Shifaullah Rokhri passes away

• Renowned Seraiki folk singer Shifaullah Khan Rokhri passed away after suffering a heart attack in Islamabad on August 29, 2020.
• He belonged to Rokhri, a village 13km from Mianwali, and he used his village as a part of his name.
• Born in the last 1960s, Shifaullah started singing in the 1982/83 after inheriting the passion for singing from his father who was a police official. Shifaullah himself was policeman.

10. `Black Panther` star Boseman dies after battle with cancer

• Chadwick Boseman, star of the ground-breaking superhero movie `Black Panther,` has died at the age of 43 after a private four-year battle with colon cancer, his publicist said on August 28, 2020.
• Boseman never publicly discussed his condition and continued to work on major Hollywood films during and between `countless` operations and chemotherapy, his family said in a statement.
• `It was the honor of his career to bring King T`Challa to life in `Black Panther,“ they said. `A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through hit all,` the statement added.
• He died in his home `with his wife and family by his side,` it said
