1. European Union retains ban on PIA flights

• The European Commission has decided to retain the ban on Pakistan International Airlines operations in its member countries and asked the country`s aviation authorities to remove safety deficiencies and improve the whole process of issuing licences to commercial pilots.
• The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) had suspended the authorisation for the PIA to operate in European Union member countries for six months in July 2020


2. Minister announces Pak-Afghan train service

• Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has announced plans to link Pakistan with Afghanistan through railway by laying a track from Chaman to Spin Boldak, the first Afghan town near the Pak Afghan border.
• He disclosed this while speaking at a press conference after arriving in Quetta on a two-day visit on December 3, 2020.
• He said that in the first phase Pakistan would lay around 11km-long railway track from Chaman to Spin Boldak, adding that a survey had been completed in this regard and preparation for PC-1 of the project was in progress


3. PM announces monthly stipend for two million differently abled persons

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on December 3, 2020 said that around two million families would benefit from the government’s new Ehsaas Kafaalat Policy aimed at extending financial support to special persons.
• As the world observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Thursday, the prime minister said on Twitter that under the new programme, the special persons would be eligible for a monthly stipend of Rs2000. “This is a step toward a disability-inclusive and sustainable post COVID-19 world,” he remarked


4. Naval chief honoured with ‘Legion of Merit’ in Turkey

• Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi was December 3, 2020 conferred with the “Legion of Merit” of the Turkish Armed Forces by Turkish Naval Forces Commander Admiral Adnan Ozbal during his official visit to Turkey.
• The naval chief also called on minister of national defence, Turkish armed forces commander, Turkish naval forces commander and the President of Defence Industries, says a press release issued by the Pakistan Navy’s public media cell here


5. UNGA adopts Pak-led resolution on interreligious dialogue

• The United Nations General Assembly December 3, 2020 adopted a resolution co-sponsored by Pakistan and the Philippines on the “Promotion of interreligious and intercultural dialogue” by an overwhelming majority.
• This resolution is part of Pakistan’s global efforts to promote interfaith harmony, tolerance, respect for each other’s religions and values, and peaceful co-existence. The resolution welcomes the Kartarpur initiative by Pakistan, referring to it as a “landmark initiative for interreligious and intercultural cooperation for peace”.


6. Hasina calls for strengthening ties with Pakistan

• Pakistan and Bangladesh are likely to revive their bilateral mechanisms to take their ties forward, a diplomatic source said on December 3, 2020 after Pakistan`s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Imran Ahmed Siddiqui called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed in Dhaka.
• It was a rare meeting between Pakistan`s envoy and the Bangladeshi prime minister because of the once frosty ties between the two countries, which have witnessed major improvements this year


7. Three Pakistani firms on Forbes `under $1bn` list

• Three Pakistani companies made it to the Forbes `Asia`s Best Under A Billion 2020` list.
• The annual list recognises 200 top-performing small and mid-sized listed companies in the Asia-Pacific region with sales under $1 billion.
• Information technology company Systems Limited Pakistan (SLP) along with local textile giant Feroze1888 Mills Ltd and pharmaceutical company Searle Pakistan made it to the coveted list


8. Pakistan project wins international award

• A Project that combines satellite images, mapping technologies and the local knowledge of villagers to help build climate proof settlements in disaster-prone areas of Pakistan won an international award on December 3, 2020.
• More than one million people have benefited from the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) Pakistan project, which was a gold prize winner at the World Habitat Awards that are organised with the United Nations housing agency (UN-Habitat).


9. World food prices jump to six-year high: UN

• Global food commodity prices rose sharply in November to their highest level in nearly six years, the UN food agency said on December 3, 2020, due in part to adverse weather conditions.
• The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said prices of the most globally traded foodstuffs were up across the board, putting extra pressure in particular on 45 countries that need outside help feeding their populations


10. Bangladesh begins transfer of Rohingya to controversial island

• Bangladesh began transferring several hundred Rohingya refugees on December 3, 2020 to what the UN and rights groups worry is a dangerous low-lying island prone to cyclones and floods.
• Almost a million Rohingya — most of whom fled a military offensive in neighbouring Myanmar in 2017 — live in a vast network of squalid camps in south-east Bangladesh.
• With many of them refusing to return without guarantees for their safety and rights, and with violent drug gangs and extremists active on the sites, the Bangladeshi government has grown increasingly impatient to clear out the camps
