1. Pakistani doctor develops smartphone-based Covid-19 test

• A Pakistani doctor based in Toronto has introduced an instant Covid19 diagnostic test using a smartphone.
• Pakistan High Commissioner to Canada Raza Bashir Tarar has congratulated Dr Nageeb Khalid for his extraordinary achievement.
• In a video conversation with Dr Nageeb Khalid who led the development of smartphone-based diagnostic test for Covid-19 as Director of Medical Device Programme at the Montreal-based Two-Photon Research Inc., the high commissioner said the idea of the Covid test being displayed and communicated by the smartphone was novel and laudable


2. Pakistan set to pay back $1 bn to Saudi Arabia this week

• Pakistan is all set to pay back another $1 billion to Saudi Arabia during this week. Meanwhile, Beijing has agreed to extend $1 to $1.5 billion to compensate for bridging this gap.
• Pakistan was going to pay back $1 billion in shape of SAFE deposit to Kingdom of Saudi Arabia December 15, 2020.
• Islamabad had obtained confirmation about Saudis SAFE deposit on December 14 for a period of three years and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) received $1 billion on December 15, so tomorrow this money would be paid back ahead of the three years maturity period.


3. AirSial offers free ticket to person carrying coffin

• AirSial, a private airline which has recently launched its operation, has announced that it will provide free travel to a passenger accompanying the coffin of a loved one.
• AirSial chairman Fazal Jilani and the board of directors had decided to provide free of charge mobility of bodies, along with one family member, on all its routes.
• Prime Minister Imran Khan inaugurated AirSial on Dec 9. It is the country`s third private airline and it is being operated by Sialkot`s business community.


4. Chinese capsule with moon rocks begins return to Earth

• A Chinese space capsule bringing back the first moon rocks in more than four decades started its three-day return to Earth on December 13, 2020.
• The Change 5 lunar probe, which had been orbiting the moon for about a week, fired up four engines for about 22 minutes to move out of the moon`s orbit, the China National Space Administration said in a social media post.
• The craft`s lander touched down on the moon earlier this month close to a formation called the Mons Rumker, an area believed to have been the site of ancient volcanic activity. It coIIected about 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) of samples


5. Rocket motor fails to ignite on Virgin Galactic test flight

• A Virgin Galactic test flight on December 13, 2020 ended prematurely as the spacecraft’s rocket motor failed to ignite and it then glided down safely to its landing site in southern New Mexico.
• The space crafts engine is supposed to ignite moments after the craft is released from a special carrier jet, sending it in a near-vertical climb toward the edge of space


6. Moroccan schools to teach Jewish history and culture

• Jewish history and culture in Morocco will soon be part of the school curriculum a `first` in the region and in the North African country, where Islam is the state religion.
• The decision `has the impact of a tsunami,` said Serge Berdugo, secretary general of the Council of Jewish Communities of Morocco. It `is a first in the Arab world,` he said from Casablanca


7. Israel establishes ties with Bhutan

• Israel established diplomatic relations with the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan on December 13, 2020, the Israeli foreign ministry said, the latest in a string of normalisation deals agreed by the Jewish state.
• “The circle of recognition of Israel is widening,” Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi said in a statement


8. US set for mass vaccinations as world virus deaths top 1.6 million

• The Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine was to begin leaving the company’s Michigan factory on December 13, 2020, ready to be injected into the arms of millions of the most vulnerable Americans as the global death toll topped 1.6 million.
• Doses will be shipped out in boxes containing dry ice that are capable of staying at -70 degrees Celsius (-94 degrees Fahrenheit), the frigid temperature needed to preserve the drug. General Gus Perna, who is overseeing the massive logistical operation as part of the government’s Operation Warp Speed, likened the moment to D-Day, a turning point of World War II


9. Hussain Hamid lifts 1st Air Sial Golf trophy

• Young Hussain Hamid lifted the trophy in the 1st Air Sial Golf Trophy 2020, which took place here at the Royal Palm Golf Course on December 13, 2020.
• Hussain compiled a total of 41 aggregate points in this stable ford format based event where a birdie fetches three points, a par realizes two points and a bogie brings only one point. All in all, Hussain had three birdies, 12 regulation pars and three bogies. Abdullah Sharif almost became a star of the event by compiling 41 aggregate points, ending up level with the winner Hussain, but as per rules of the championship, Hussain earned more points on the back nine and hence attained the top position. Third slot was earned by Muhammad Abid with a tally of 38 points


10. Ex-Test cricketer Shahid Mahmood passes away

• Former Pakistan Test cricketer Shahid Mahmood expired in New Jersey on December 13, 2020 according to a report. He was 81.
• Shahid who was born in the Indian city of Lucknow on March 17, 1939 toured England in 1962 with the Pakistan side led by Javed Burki and played in the Nottingham Test but went wicketless in six overs as the visitors drew the only match of the five-Test series which was won 4-0 by England
