1. Holy Quran`s compulsory teaching from next year, court assured

• The Lahore High Court was assured on December 24, 2020 that the provisions of the Punjab Compulsory Teaching of Holy Quran Act 2018 would be enforced in letter and spirit in all educational institutions from the next academic year.
• The undertaking was given by Secretary of School Education Department Dr Sohail Shehzad before a two-judge bench seized with an appeal seeking a direction for the government to take all possible steps to enable the Muslims, individually and collectively, to order their lives in accordance with the fundamental principles and concepts of Islam


2. Pak-China Air Exercise Shaheen-Ix concludes

• The Pak-China Joint Air Exercise “Shaheen-IX” concluded at an operational air base of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) on December 24, 2020 with a resolve to jointly cope with the shared security challenges.
• Chief of the Air Staff Pakistan Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan was the chief guest at the closing ceremony. Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, Nong Rong also attended the ceremony as guest of honour. The ceremony commenced with playing of national anthems of both the countries, according to the PAF officials


3. Youth Pehchan Programme launched in Balochistan

• Balochistan Governor Amanullah Khan Yasinzai has said that involving the youth in all socioeconomic activities and making them part of policy making is the need of the hour.
• Speaking at the opening ceremony of `Governor`s Youth Pehchan Programme` on December 24, 2020, he said: `I want to assure you that this programme will create opportunities for students of backward areas. They will be a part of an excellent training and capacity building programme and career counseling facilities


4. Germany offers assistance worth €10m to Pakistan

• Pakistan and Germany have on December 24, 2020 signed the Technical Cooperation Agreement worth €10 Million.
• Under the agreement, Germany will provide technical assistance worth €10 Million (Rs1.95 Billion) for two projects, “Promoting Resilience against Impacts of Natural Disaster in Pakistan” and “Improvement of Labour, Social and Environmental Standards in Pakistan Textile Industry”.


5. Ethiopia launches second Chinese- backed satellite

• An Ethiopian official on December 24, 2020 disclosed Ethiopia has launched its second Chinese-backed satellite.
• Yishrun Alemayehu, Deputy General Director of Ethiopia Space Science and Technology Institute (ESSTI), said the satellite which was launched on Tuesday has high advanced resolutions and capable pictures to capture pictures in a clearer way. The satellite abbreviated as ET-Smart-RSS was launched from China Wenchang spacecraft launch site


6. UK, EU reach post-Brexit trade agreement

• Just a week before the deadline, Britain and the European Union struck a free-trade deal on December 24, 2020 that should avert economic chaos on new year`s day and bring a measure of certainty for businesses after years of Brexit turmoil.
• Once ratified by both sides, the agreement will ensure Britain and the 27-nation bloc can continue to trade in goods without tariffs or quotas after the UK breaks fully free of the EU on Jan 1.


7. New virus strain to cause more deaths in UK: study

• A mutated coronavirus strain spreading in Britain is on average 56 percent more contagious than the original version, scientists have warned in a study, urging a fast vaccine rollout to help prevent more deaths.
• The new variant, which emerged in southeast England in November and is spreading fast, is likely to boost hospitalisations and deaths from Covid next year, according to the study published December 24, 2020 by the Centre for Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine


8. UK-France border to stay open at Christmas to clear truck logjam

• Rail and sea links between the UK and France will remain open over Christmas to clear the backlog of thousands of trucks stranded by a new strain of coronavirus, Britain said December 24, 2020.
• Thousands of European truckers on Wednesday spent a fourth night sleeping in the cabs of their vehicles, which are stuck close to the major cross-Channel port of Dover while the drivers wait to pass a Covid test, as required by France for travel. Around 6,000 trucks were waiting early Wednesday evening to cross the border, according to the British Department of Transport, including 3,750 vehicles parked at the old Manston airport, which is also Covid testing site.


9. Kuwait starts Covid-19 jabs as Gulf rolls out mass vaccinations

• Kuwait began coronavirus vaccinations on December 24, 2020, following several other Gulf states in rolling out a mass inoculation campaign.
• “This vaccine is safe and has been approved by many countries,” said Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah, who was the first to receive the jab, state media reported.
• Kuwait, which has officially confirmed more than 148,000 coronavirus cases including 924 deaths, received the first 150,000 doses of the the vaccine developed by US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech on Wednesday.


10. PCB announces players` categories for HBL PSL 2021

• The players` categories for the 6th HBL Pakistan Super League 2021 have been announced.
• The national team`s captain Babar Azam is included in the Platinum category along with Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir in Karachi Kings.
• `Pakistan captain Babar Azam, who was the Player of the Tournament in the 2020 edition after scoring 473 runs in 12 matches, is joined by Karachi Kings teammates Imad Wasimand Mohammad Amir in the Platinum category,`according to a Pakistan Cricket Board press release issued on Friday
