1. Seven FC men martyred in Harnai terrorist attack

• At least seven security personnel have been martyred in an attack by terrorists on a Frontier Corps check post in the areas of Sharag coal mines in Balochistan`s Harnai district.
• A statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the incident happened on Saturday night.
• `Heavy exchange of fire took place between FC personnel and terrorists, during which seven brave soldiers, including a Naib Subedar, embraced Shahadat while repulsing raiding terrorists,` said the ISPR.


2. Pakistan affirms resolve to deal with all diseases

• Pakistan on December 27, 2020 expressed its firm resolve to strengthen national mechanisms and capacities, as well as global partnerships for robust health systems, to prevent and respond to all diseases and epidemics.
• On the first International Day of Epidemic Preparedness commemorated on Sunday, the Foreign Office spokesperson said in a press release that the day also reminded of the importance of reducing poverty, inequality and of achieving sustainable development for all, by targeted interventions and investments in health, education, environment and water and sanitation, with a view to combating all diseases and epidemics, including the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic


3. 104 constituencies have gender gap of over 50,000

• There are as many as 12 National Assembly constituencies in three provinces of the country where the percentage of women voters is less than 41 per cent.
• Six of such constituencies are in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, four in Sindh and two in Balochistan.
• A thorough analysis of the constituency-wise data of voters posted by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on its website shows that the situation inNA-50 (South Waziristan) is the worst as the gap there between male and female voters exceeds the total number of women enrolled as voters.


4. $400m WB aid sought to help KP govt

• The federal government is seeking financing of $400 million from the World Bank to strengthen the capacity of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to manage public resources, and improve resource availability and accountability for delivery of education and health services.
• The KP government has made progress in revenue mobilisation and management of public finance.
• However, several challenges remain to be addressed


5. Next round of Afghan talks to begin in Doha on Jan 5

• The next round of negotiations between the Taliban and the Afghan government would be held in Qatar from next month, a top official said on December 27, 2020, despite President Ashraf Ghani`s recent calls for them to be moved home.
• Peace talks began on September 12 at a luxury hotel in Doha, but negotiations are currently on a break until January5

• Voters went to the polls on December 27, 2020 in the Central African Republic in presidential and legislative elections marred by the latest flare-up in a long running civil war, with many voters unable to cast their ballots.
• Incumbent Faustin Archange Touadera is the frontrunner in polls that follow a week of turbulence marked by accusations of an attempted coup, rebels briefly seizing the fourth largest town and Russia and Rwanda dispatching military personnel to help the beleaguered government

• Unemployment benefits for millions of Americans struggling to make ends meet lapsed overnight as President Donald Trump refused to sign an end-of-year Covid relief and spending bill that had been considered a done deal before his sudden objections.
• The fate of the bipartisan package remained in limbo on Sunday as Trump continued to demand larger Covid relief cheques and complained about pork spending. Without the widespread funding provided by the massive measure, a government shutdown would occur when money runs out at 12:01am on Tuesday

• Voters went to the polls in Niger on December 27, 2020 for an election that could seal a first peaceful handover between elected presidents, against the backdrop of a bloody jihadist insurgency.
• The West African country, unstable since gaining independence from France 60 years ago, is ranked the world`s poorest country according to the UN`s Human Development Index

• The EU countries on Sunday embarked on a vaccination campaign to defeat the `nightmare` of Covid-19, with the first to be immunised expressing emotions after their jabs and leaders hailing a milestone in the fight against the pandemic.
• The vaccine is a glimmer of hope for a continent yearning for a return to normal from a pandemic that has killed 1.76 million people worldwide since emerging in China late last year and caused at least 80 million confirmed cases, according to a tally

• Phenomenal Muzammil Murtaza finally claimed the 6th Begum Kulsum Saifullah Khan National Ranking Tennis Tournament title after stunning top seed Aqeel Khan in the men’s singles final played at the PTF Complex, Islamabad on December 27, 2020.
• Muzammil kept on giving tough time to longest serving No 1 tennis player Aqeel throughout the year and had very close and tough fights in many national tournament finals but finally in the last national tennis tournament of this year, he succeeded in downing the top seed and climaxing the title
