1. Security policy sees economy as pivotal to stability

• The National Security Committee (NSC) on December 27, 2021 approved the National Security Policy that puts economic stability at the core of a comprehensive national security.
• Prime Minister Imran Khan chaired a meeting of the NSC, which is the government`s top most consultative and decision-making body for coordinating issues pertaining to national security. The session was attended by the federal ministers for foreign affairs, defence, information and broadcasting, interior, finance and human rights, the national security adviser, services chiefs and senior officials.
• The five-year policy document covering the period 2022-26 is being flaunted by the government as the first-ever strategy paper of its kind that sets out the state`s national security vision and guidelines for attainment of those goals


2. CM approves hiring of 70,000 Arabic teachers

• Chief Minister Usman Buzdar on December 27, 2021 approved the appointment of 70,000 Arabic teachers for compulsory teaching of the Holy Quran in all schools of the province.
• The School Education Department had submitted the proposal of recruiting 70,000 Arabic teachers to the Cabinet.
• SED Secretary Ghulam Fareed said that the Arabic teachers were being trained for compulsory teaching of Holy Quran in the schools. He said new posts had been created from grade-1 to 5.
• A division bench of the Lahore High Court headed by Justice Shahid Waheed is presently hearing an appeal seeking teaching of the Quran in schools


3. Senate defers bill seeking to decriminalise suicide bid

• The Senate on Monday deferred consideration of a bill seeking to decriminlise suicide attempt.
• The criminal laws amendment bill proposing to amend the Pakistan Penal Code(PPC) and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) to abolish punishment for those making attempts to commit suicide had been moved by Senator Shahadat Awan of the PPP, on the plea that this was done by people suffering from mental disorder who deserved medical treatment, not punishment.
• Mr Awan said such people were generally denied immediate treatment and referred for medico-legal process, placing their lives at risk. Therefore, he said, attempt to commit suicide, which currently carried one-year jail term, should be decriminalised.


4. `Over 150m Covid vaccine doses administered`

• Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar on December 27, 2021 said that over 150 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine had been administered to people across the country.
• `Total vaccinations carried out now exceed 15 crore.
• Punjab leads the way with 68 per cent of eligible population having received at least one dose. KP at 57pc, Sindh at 51pc and Balochistan at 38pc. Balochistan has done a great job in December and sharply increased vaccinations,` the minister tweeted


5. Conditional gas supply to textile sector approved

• After a month-long impasse, the government on December 27, 2021 conditionally agreed to provide 50 per cent gas supply to textile manufacturers for co-generation on a best effort basis provided they surrender in writing their stay orders and get their energy audits conducted.
• Energy Minister Hammad Azhar told Dawn that a government team and a delegation of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) on Monday reached an agreement under which textile mills would be provided half of their requirement-75 million cubic feet per day (mmcf d) instead 150 mmcf d -on best effort basis. This will be supplied only to co-generation plants.
• In return, the textile millers would give in writing that they would not go for stay orders to get gas reconnection


6. Tarin sworn in as finance minister

• Senator Shaukat Tarin on December 27, 2021 took the oath as federal minister for finance and revenue for a second time during the year.
• President Dr Arif Alvi administered the oath to Mr Tarin at Aiwan-i-Sadr. After the oath, the president extended felicitations to the newly sworn in member of the cabinet.
• Mr Tarin was appointed finance minister on April 17, 2021 and his constitutional tenure ended on Oct 16. He needed to be elected to parliament in order to continue in his post for longer than six months


7. India freezes accounts of Mother Teresa`s charity

• Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s government on December 27, 2021 froze the bank accounts of Mother Teresa`s Missionaries of Charity (MoC) in West Bengal, the state`s political leader said on Monday, after weekend protests over Christmas celebrations.
• Hindu vigilante groups disrupted Christmas mass in parts of India, including in Modi`s core territory ahead of local elections in the coming months.
• Hardline Hindu outfits affiliated to Modi`s party have repeatedly accused the MoC of leading religious conversion programmes under the guise of charity by offering poor Hindus and tribal communities money, free education and shelter


8. Sri Lanka shuts three foreign missions as dollar crisis worsens

• Sri Lanka announced on December 27, 2021 the closure of three overseas diplomatic missions in a bid to save foreign currency reserves, as the country`s central bank slapped tighter controls on dollars needed to finance essential imports.
• The Sri Lankan High Commission (embassy) in Nigeria and consulates in Germany and Cyprus will be closed from January in the restructuring, the foreign ministry said.
• `The restructuring is undertaken with a view to conserving the country`s much needed foreign reserves and minimising expenditure related to maintenance of Sri Lanka`s missions overseas,` the ministry said in a statement


9. UAE issues first civil marriage licence for non-Muslim couple

• The UAE issued its first civil marriage licence for a non Muslim couple, state media reported on December 27, 2021, as the Gulf country seeks to keep its edge over regional competitors.
• The United Arab Emirates where foreigners make up 90 per cent of the approximately 10 million population has been amending its laws to present itself as a modernising force in a largely conservative region.
• The official WAM news agency said a Canadian couple were the first to marry under a new law on the personal status of non-Muslims in the Emirati capital Abu Dhabi. The move `contributes to the consolidation of Abu Dhabi`s position as a world leading destination for skills and expertise from around the world,` WAM said.


10. Sociobiology pioneer E.O.Wilson dies

• Edward. O. Wilson, the trailblazing US scientist, professor and author whose study of insects and clarion call to protect Earth earned him the nickname `Darwin`s natural heir,` has died at age 92.
• Wilson, whose death was announced on Monday by his foundation, was an award winning biologist and longtime Harvard University research professor, considered the world`s leading authority on ants and their behavior.
• While an entomologist early in his career, he broadened his scope immensely, studying not just insects but the social interactions of birds, mammals and humans, and he effectively and controversially established a new field of science known as sociobiology.
• He was the author of hundreds of scientific papers and more than 30 books, two of which won him Pulitzer Prizes for nonfiction: 1978`s `On Human Nature,` and `The Ants` in 1990
