1. Rules okayed to improve bureaucracy performance

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on December 2, 2020 approved the Civil Servants (E&D) Rules2020 under government`s policy of institutional reforms to improve performance of bureaucracy and state institutions.
• According to a senior official of the Prime Minister Office (PMO), the aim of these rules is to ensure transparent and effective internal accountability of bureaucrats and bring efficiency and discipline in their service.
• Under the new rules, inquiry against government officials will have to be decided within 90 days.


2. Drap launches online application management system

• Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) on December 2, 2020 launched online application management system to ensure accountability, quality and transparency.
• The system, named Pakistan Integrated Regulatory Information Management System (PIRIMS), has been developed with the support of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and will ensure online linkage of pharmaceutical companies and applicants with Drap


3. PIA to acquire eight new aircraft on dry lease

• The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has decided to add eight new narrow body aircraft to its fleet on dry lease.
• The aircraft with seating capacity of 170-plus (all economy with soft divider after two rows) are expected to be delivered from January to December 2021.
• The PIA management has sought bids from different parties by January 11 next year for acquiring the eight aircraft on dry lease, which means the airline would only acquire the aircraft without flight crew


4. Former PM Zafarullah Jamali passes away

• Former prime minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali passed away here on December 2, 2020 night.
• He was admitted to the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) after suffering cardiac arrest.
• The 76-year-old senior politician from Balochistan served as prime minister of the country from 2002 to 2004 in former president Pervez Musharraf`s regime


5. Form-E condition for exports up to $5,000 goes

• The State Bank on December 2, 2020 removed the condition of filling the lengthy Form-E for small exporters in a bid to boost exports amid the Covid-19 pandemic and changing global consumer markets.
• The central bank issued a detail regulatory framework to facilitate Business-to Consumer (B2C) e-Commerce exports from Pakistan


6. UK becomes first nation to roll out Covid vaccine

• Britain on December 2, 2020 became the first western country to approve a Covid-19 vaccine for general use, while Italy and Japan promised free inoculations for all even as the global death toll ticked towards 1.5 million.
• A mere 12 months after the pandemic began in China, the UK`s independent medicines regulator gave its green light to the BioNTech-Pfizer drug in double quick time but insisted safety had come first.


7. Singapore okays sale of lab-grown meat in world first

• Lab-grown chicken will soon be available in restaurants in Singapore after the country became the first to greenlight meat created without slaughtering any animals.
• US start-up Eat Just said on December 2, 2020 that its meat had been approved for sale in the city-state as an ingredient in chicken nuggets.
• The news marks a `breakthrough for the global food industry`, said the company, as firms increasingly try to find less environmentally harmful ways of producing meat


8. Afghan govt, Taliban agree on rules for further talks

• Peace negotiations between the Taliban and the Afghan government in Qatar are ready to advance to the next stage, both sides said on December 2, 2020 after agreeing on rules for the talks.
• The meetings, which began in September, had been bogged down by disputes on the agenda, the basic framework of discussions and religious interpretations.


9. 2020 on course to be one of three hottest years ever recorded: UN

• This year is on course to be one of the three warmest ever recorded and could even top the record set in 2016, the United Nations said on December 2, 2020.
• The past six years, 2015 to 2020, are therefore set to make up all six of the hottest years since modern records began in 1850, the UN`s World Meteorological Organisation said in its provisional 2020 State of the Global Climate report


10. Israeli parliament takes first step towards new poll

• Israel`s precarious coalition government took a first step towards collapse on December 2, 2020, as lawmakers gave a preliminary approval to a bill dissolving parliament, raising prospects of a fourth election in less than two years.
• The measure passed with support from the Blue and White party led by Alternate Prime Minister Benny Gantz, the key partner in the coalition headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
