1. Another Chinese vaccine approved for emergency use

• The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) on February 12, 2021 issued emergency use authorisation to the Chinese company Cansino Biologics Inc`s Covid-19 vaccine after which supply of the doses will start in a few weeks.
• It will become the fourth vaccine to be allowed for emergency use in the country.
• Cansino Biologics Inc is the only company that has conducted clinical trial in Pakistan, with around 18,000 volunteers participating from across the country


2. Four soldiers martyred in terrorist attack on South Waziristan post

• Four soldiers were martyred in a terrorist attack on a check-post in the Makeen area of South Waziristan tribal district late on February 12, 2021 night.
• The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement on Friday that four terrorists were also killed when security personnel retaliated.
• The military`s media wing confirmed the martyrdom of four soldiers


3. Maritime exercise Aman-2021 opens

• The seventh edition of the multinational maritime exercise Aman2021 formally opened at the Pakistan Navy dockyard here on February 12, 2021 with an impressive and colourful flag-hoisting ceremony in which flags of 45 participating countries were hoisted simultaneously.
• The ceremony was attended by a large number of senior military representatives from the participating countries, observers, diplomats and Pakistan Navy officials.
• The message of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Mohammad Amjad Khan Niazi, was read out on the occasion.


4. Torkham border opens to pedestrians

• The authorities on February 12, 2021 opened the Torkham border crossing to pedestrians after the interior ministry notified its opening six days a week.
• The border officials told Dawn that fewer people were interested in travelling between Pakistan and Afghanistan on the first day of the border opening as Fridays used to be a closed day prior to the issuance of the interior ministry`s new notification.


5. Russia says it would be ready to cut EU ties if hit with painful sanctions

• Russia said on February 12, 2021 it would be ready to sever ties with the European Union if the bloc hit it with painful economic sanctions, a statement that Germany described as disconcerting and incomprehensible.
• Ties between Russia and the West, already at post-Cold War lows, have come under renewed pressure over the arrest and jailing of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny


6. China`s Mars probe sends back video of Red Planet

• China`s space agency released video footage from its spacecraft circling Mars on February 12, 2021, two days after it successfully entered the planet`s orbit in Beijing`s latest ambitious space mission.
• In the video, published by state broadcaster CCTV, the surface of the planet is seen coming into view out of a pitch black sky against the outside of the Tianwen-1, which entered the orbit of the Red Planet on Wednesday


7. UK scientists develop test to detect womb cancer

• British scientists announced on February 12, 2021 they had developed a test to detect womb cancer using urine samples, explaining the method could replace a painful and invasive procedure currently in use.
• At present, clinicians diagnose the cancer by taking a biopsy, a process which requires a narrow telescope called a hysteron scope, to examine inside of the uterus and remove cells


8. Navalny back in Moscow court on defamation charges

• Russia’s main Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny was back in court February 12, 2021 for allegedly defaming a World War II veteran, after being ordered to prison in another case that sparked global outrage and mass protests in his country.
• The hearing came a little over one week after the 44-year-old opposition leader, a persistent thorn in President Vladimir Putin’s flesh, was sentenced to serve nearly three years in jail


9. Tokyo Olympics chief quits, apologises again over sexist remarks

• Tokyo 2020 Olympics chief Yoshiro Mori resigned on February 12, 2021 and apologised again for sexist remarks that sparked a global outcry, leaving the troubled Olympics searching for a chief five months from the opening ceremony.
• The resignation of the 83-yearold former prime minister further erodes conndence in organisers ability to pull off the postponed Summer Games during a coronavirus pandemic


10. Pakistan to tour South Africa for ODI, T20 series in April

• Pakistan will play three One-day Internationals and four Twenty20 Internationals in South Africa during April, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced on February 12, 2021.
• The Pakistan squad will stay in a bio-secure environment and matches will be confined to two venues -SuperSport Park in Centurion and the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. The tourists will play the ODIs on April 2, 4 and 7 after which the four Twenty20 games will be held from April 10 to 16.
• The series will bring to an end a home international season heavily affected by Covid-19.
