1. Citizens mark Surprise Day with national pride

• Pakistan on February 27, 2021 celebrated the second anniversary of the “Operation Swift Retort’ that its brave air force had launched against intruding Indian jets in Azad Jammu and Kashmir on February 27, 2019, shooting down the adversary’s aircraft and arresting a pilot.
• The main ceremony was held at the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) headquarters here, which was telecast live by all media channels besides airing documentaries based on the whole episode starting from the Pulwama incident to shooting down of two Indian aircraft, arrest and release of the captured pilot Abhinandan as a goodwill gesture by Pakistan
• February 27, 2021 was marked as the ‘Surprise Day’ to pay tribute to the valiant Shaheens for their heroic defence of the motherland while retaliating to Indian Air Force (IAF) violation of its sovereign territories on a momentous day.


2. Pakistan ready to take peace process with India forward: PM

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on February 27, 2021 signalled Pakistan`s readiness to take the peace process with India forward and said making headway was contingent on India providing an environment conducive to progress.
• `We have always stood for peace and remain ready to move forward to resolve all outstanding issues through dialogue,` the prime minister said in a series of tweets on the second anniversary of Pakistan Air Force`s `Swift Retort` operation in which two intruding Indian Air Force fighters were shot down and one of the pilots was captured.


3. Pakistan among 92 countries where UK strain detected

• The federal government has claimed that Pakistan is among 92 countries in the world where the UK strain of Covid-19 has been detected, urging people to follow health guidelines and go for vaccination.
• On the other hand, following the emergence of 1,315more patients and 33 deaths in a single day, the overall number of cases since the first patient was reported in the country last year has reached 578,797, with the positivity rate of 6.49 per cent.Besides,12,837 people have succumbed to the deadly virus till now


4. Lahore police launch Ababeel Squad

• Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Ghulam Mahmood Dogar on February 27, 2021 launched another new police unit Ababeel Squad to control street crime and law and order situation.
• The squad was especially raised as a support unit for crime hotspots of the city to ensure effective patrol.
• Mr Dogar said the Ababeel Squad would be a motorbike force. Initially, he added, it comprised 40 personnel who were provided 20 motorcycles and were specially trained to cordon off the areas of crime and conduct patrolling.


5. United Nations Security Council calls for global ceasefires to speed up virus vaccination

• The UN Security Council (UNSC) has unanimously adopted a resolution calling on all member states to support a “sustained humanitarian pause” to local conflicts, in order to allow for coronavirus vaccinations.
• Resolution 2656, adopted unanimously by the 15-member council, will enable the vaccines, which COVAX began distributing on February 24, to reach those living in conflict areas.
• Briefing journalists afterwards, World Health Organisation (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus argued that more could be done


6. Clashes in Yemen`s Marib kill 50 fighters

• Fighting in war-torn Yemen`s Marib province between government forces and Houthi rebels killed around 50 combatants, including a special forces commander.
• Earlier this month, the Houthis resumed a push to capture Marib city, 120 kilometres (75 miles) east of the rebel-held capital Sanaa.
• The city lies close to some of Yemen`s richest oil fields and its capture would be major prize for the rebels


7. Scottish Labour elects Anas Sarwar as new leader

• Scottish Labour named Anas Sarwar as their new leader on February 27, 2021, ahead of an election for the country`s devolved parliament in May. Sarwar, a Glasgow member of the Scottish parliament (MSP), succeeds Richard Leonard who resigned in January.
• Anas is son of Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar. He said that `as a father I am overjoyed & proud to see you, @AnasSarwar make history & take on the responsibility of rebuilding the Scottish Labour Party. I am sure that will do justice to the role with sincerity/commitment & will strive to meet the expectations of all who voted for you. Sarwar is the first minority ethnic leader of a major political party in the UK.


8. House approves Biden`s $1.9tr Covid-19 relief plan

• The US House passed an enormous, $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package early on February 27, 2021, hailed by Democrats as a critical step in funneling new funding towards vaccinations, overburdened local governments, and millions of families devastated by the pandemic.
• Four days after the Covid-19 death toll surpassed 500,000 in the United States, the sprawling measure backed by President Joe Biden and seen as a moral imperative by many now heads to the Senate for consideration next week.


9. Peshawar trounce Islamabad

• Wahab Riaz and Saqib Mahmood shared the bowling honours with seven wickets between them as Peshawar Zalmi completed a six-wicket rout of Islamabad United in their HBL Pakistan Super League encounter at the National Stadium.
• For the 10th consecutive game, the side chasing the target won the match after the two-time former PSL winners Islamabad United were skittled out for 118 in 17.1 overs the lowest total in a completed innings, which came exactly one week after Quetta Gladiators mustered 121 in the sixth edition`s opening fixture against defending champions Karachi Kings


10. Babar Azam`s belligerent knock sinks Multan Sultans in key clash

• Babar Azam starred with a sublime unbeaten 90 as holders Karachi Kings catapulted to a rousing seven-wicket victory over Multan Sultans in their HBL Pakistan Super League 6 fixture at the National Stadium.
• As per the norm in this tournament so far, total of 195-6 in 20 overs seemed inadequate to defend as Multan Sultans found out once their fate was decided by the toss which again became decisive for the ninth straight encounter as the side luck on that count emerging winners with Babar reaching a notable milestone by registering his highest score in the HBL PSL as Karachi Kings scythed through to their 196-run chase in 18.5 overs
