1. Govt agrees to pay $28.7m damages to US firm

• The federal cabinet has approved payment of $28.7 million in damages to the Washington-based asset recovery firm Broadsheet LL C and at the same time decided to challenge the British court`s decision to attach the accounts of the Pakistan High Commission in London.
• The approval was granted after the office of the attorney general and the law ministry advised the government to let the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) clear the $28.7m award


2. Foreigners invest $77.2m in govt papers

• Foreign investment in local bonds reached $77.2 million till Dec 31, 2020, data released by the State Bank of Pakistan showed on January 1, 2021.
• With the emergence of Covid-19 in March, foreign investments in treasury bills and Pakistan Investment Bonds (PIBs) left the country within a few months.
• However, foreign investors started to return in Nov 2020, with the PIBs receiving about $43m in that month


3. Pakistan, India exchange lists of nuclear installations

• Pakistan and India on January 1, 2021 exchanged lists of their nuclear installations and facilities.
• In a statement Foreign Office Spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said the list of nuclear installations and facilities in Pakistan was officially handed over to a representative of the Indian High Commission at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs


4. Ali J Hamdani appointed as SNGPL MD

• SNGPL Board of Directors has appointed Ali J. Hamdani as managing director of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) for a period of three years. Earlier, the Prime Minister had also approved appointment of Hamdani in the Federal Cabinet meeting held on December 15, 2020.
• Ali J. Hamdani features more than 30 years experience in managing international businesses particularly in energy, power, water, chemical and healthcare sectors.


5. CCPO Lahore Umar Sheikh removed after `tumultuous` stint

• The Punjab government has prematurely changed yet another Lahore police chief and posted DIG Ghulam Mahmood Dogar new Capital City Police Officer (CCPO).
• Outgoing CCPO Umar Sheikh has been transferred and posted Deputy Commandant of Punjab Constabulary, Farooqabad. Mr Sheikh has been removed from his post a few months after his appointment as Lahore CCPO on Sept 2.
• DIG Ghulam Mahmood Dogar has previously served the Punjab police as RPO of Faisalabad and Sahiwal, CPO of Gujranwala and Multan, DIG Operations Lahore, and the Chief Traffic Officer Lahore


6. Trump extends visa ban; court clears health insurance rule

• President Donald Trump on January 1, 2021 extended pandemic related bans on green cards and work visas to large groups of applicants through March 31, while a federal appeals court sided with him on a rule that requires new immigrants to have their own health insurance.
• The twin developments on the final day of 2020 encapsulated how Trump has made US immigration policy more restrictive without support from Congress. President-elect Joe Biden has promised to undo many of Trump`s actions but it is unclear how quickly and even to what extent.


7. Iran tells IAEA it plans to enrich uranium up to 20pc

• Iran has told the United Nations nuclear watchdog it plans to enrich uranium to 20 percent purity, a level it achieved before its 2015 accord, at its Fordow site buried inside a mountain.
• The move is the latest of several recent announcements made by Iran to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IA EA) that it plans to further breach the deal, which it started violating in 2019 in retaliation for Washington`s withdrawal from the agreement and the re-imposition of US sanctions against Tehran


8. India approves AstraZeneca Covid vaccine

• India`s drug regulator on January 1, 2021 approved a coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University for emergency use, two sources with knowledge of the matter said.
• The decision clears the vaccine`s rollout in the world`s second-most populous country which, after the United States, has the highest number of Covid19 infections.


9. WHO okays Pfizer vaccine for emergency use

• The World Health Organisation (WHO) has approved the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for emergency use, paving the way for it to be distributed to countries in need.
• It is the first vaccine to be added to the UN organisations` Emergency Use Listing (EUL).
• Regulatory experts convened by WHO from around the world and its own teams reviewed the data on the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and found on Thursday that it met WHO`s must-have criteria for safety and efficacy with its benefits offsetting any potential risks


10. Babar, Rizwan, Fawad, Aliya bag top PCB awards for 2020

• Pakistan`s captain in all three formats, Babar Azam, was declared as Most Valuable Cricketer of the Year and also clinched the title of White-ball Cricketer of the Year as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on January 1, 2021 announced the awards for the year 2020 without including the categories of referees and scorers.
• Moreover, acting captain of Pakistan Test team in New Zealand, Mohammad Rizwan was declared as Test Cricketer of the Year
• `Fawad Alam`s fighting and courageous 102 at Mount Maunganui, his first Test century in 11 years that made global headlines, was chosen as the Individual Performance of the Year
• In the women`s section, all rounder Aliya Riaz was named as the Women`s Cricketer of the Year while 19-year-old Fatima Sana was chosen as the Women`s Emerging Cricketer of the Year.
• The 17-year-old Test fast bowler Naseem Shah won the Emerging International Cricketer of the Year.
