1. Virginity test in abuse cases illegal, declares LHC

• The Lahore High Court has declared that the two-finger test (TFT) and the hymen test for the purposes of ascertaining virginity of a female victim of rape or sexual abuse are illegal and unconstitutional.
• `The virginity test of fends the personal dignity of the female victim and therefore is against the right to life and right to dignity enshrined in Articles 9 and 14 of the Constitution, says a 30-page judgement authored by Justice Ayesha A. Malik, allowing two identical petitions against the practice of the objectionable test.


2. PCTB notifies single national curriculum

• The Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board (PCTB) on January 4, 2021 notified implementation of the Single National Curriculum (SNC) across the province.
• As per the notification, the board in its 76th meeting approved the SNC under section 9(3) (a) of PCTB Act-2015.
• `The competent authority, Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board, Lahore, hereby notified the SNC for grades Pre I V and Model Textbooks of Education Reforms and Textbook Development Wing, Schools Education Department developed the Federal Government for implementation in all streams of education (Public, Private and Deeni Madaris) in Punjab for the forthcoming academic session 2021-22 and onwards, reads the notification


3. Punjab Police come up with ISPR-like media wing

• The Punjab police department has appointed Deputy Inspector General (operations) Sohail Akhtar Sukhera as official spokesperson for the department under a newly-created information management and data sharing system.
• The seat was created under the Punjab Police Information Branch (PPIB), a news wing madeon the pattern of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).


4. Educational institutions to reopen in phases from 18th

• The Inter-Provincial Education Ministers Conference on January 4, 2021 decided to reopen the country`s educational institutions in phases from Jan 18.
• The conference also decided to postpone board examinations for class 9th to 12th from March-April to May-June to provide some extra time to students to complete their course.


5. Dr Saqib assumes charge as CEO PHC

• Senior civil servant (retired), and former Federal Secretary Dr Muhammad Saqib Aziz has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Punjab Healthcare Commission (PHC).
• He has assumed the charge of his office on January 4, 2021


6. Trump presses official to `find` enough votes for him

• Georgia`s Republican top election official said on January 4, 2021 the White House had pushed him against his better judgement to take a call from President Donald Trump in which he pressured the state to overturn his November presidential election defeat there.
• In the call on January 4, 2021, Trump told Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to `find` enough votes to overturn his election loss in the southern state, according to a recording published by US media


7. Iran starts 20pc uranium enrichment, seizes tanker

• Iran on January 4, 2021 began enriching uranium up to 20pc at an underground facility and seized a South Korean-flagged oil tanker in the crucial Strait of Hormuz, further escalating tensions in the Middle East between Tehran and the West.
• The announcement of enrichment at Fordo came as fears rose that Tehran had seized the MT Hankuk Chemi. Iran later acknowledged the seizure, alleging the vessel`s oil pollution sparked the move


8. Xi signs mobilization order for training of armed forces

• Chinese President Xi Jinping on January 4, 2021 signed a mobilization order for the training of the armed forces, the first order of the Central Military Commission (CMC) in 2021.
• Signed by Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the CMC, the order stressed strengthening military training in real combat conditions and the ability to win


9. Intelligent cameras can understand what they are seeing

• Intelligent cameras could be one step closer thanks to a research collaboration between the Universities of Bristol and Manchester who have developed cameras that can learn and understand what they are seeing.
• Roboticists and artificial intelligence (AI) researchers know there is a problem in how current systems sense and process the world.


10. World’s oldest python’s fossils found; origin lies in Europe

• Together with his colleague Hussam Zaher of the University in São Paulo, Senckenberg scientist Krister Smith described the world’s oldest known fossils of a python.
• The almost completely preserved snakes with a length around one meter were discovered in the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Messel Pit” and are about 47 million years old.
