1. Mini-budget laid before Senate amid opposition protest

• The government on January 4, 2022 finally laid the controversial finance supplementary bill, generally known as mini-budget, before the Senate amid opposition`s noisy protest as Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani referred the bill to the house committee concerned with the directive to finalise recommendations within three days.
• The opposition members stood up and raised anti-government slogans as soon as the chairman gave floor to Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin to lay a copy of the money bill, the Finance (Supplementary) Bill, 2021, which the government had already introduced in the National Assembly on December 30, with another controversial State Bank of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill, 2021 aimed at granting autonomy to the central bank.
• The opposition members later in their speeches blasted the government for presenting the minibudget on the `dictation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)`, terming it a `total surrender of the country`s economic sovereignty`

2. Senate chairman refers rulers` foreign visits to house panel

• Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani on January 4, 2022 referred the issue of foreign visits of Prime Minister Imran Khan and ex-rulers of the country to the house committee for a complete review and preparing a comparative report after the house witnessed a verbal clash between the opposition members and a government minister over the matter.
• The opposition members staged a token walkout to register their protest over the statement made by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Mohammad Khan while responding to a question about the foreign visits of Prime Minister Imran Khan over the past three years.
• The Senate was informed in response to a question asked by Mushtaq Ahmed of the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) that the prime minister had undertaken 31 visits of 14 countries during the last three years which cost the national exchequer over Rs200 million

3. Team of engineers sent to Afghanistan by health ministry

• The Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination has dispatched a team of engineers and technicians to Afghanistan for early completion of three new hospitals to provide relief to the people of the war-torn neighbouring country. This was disclosed during a meeting of the Afghanistan Inter ministerial Coordination Cell (AICC) on January 4, 2022.
• According to an official press release, the meeting was apprised that buildings of the three hospitals namely the Nishtar Hospital, Jalalabad; Jinnah Hospital, Kabul; and Logari Hospital, Logar have been completed. However, installation and commissioning of medical equipment worth Rs 2 billion is still under way.
• To bring the medical equipment in use, a team of four Pakistani engineers along with technicians was working round the clock

4. KP Assembly wants action on resolution for new provinces including Hazara

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on January 4, 2022 demanded of the federal government to implement its earlier resolution, which had called for the creation of four provinces in the country, especially Hazara province.
• MPA of the opposition Awami National Party from Swat district Waqar Khan was the only member in the house, who opposed the resolution by voice vote.
• Significantly, the resolution carried the signature of ANP lawmaker Laiq Khan, who belongs to Torghar district.
• Members of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz from Hazara division moved the resolution, which the house passed by a majority vote

5. UN praises Pakistan for carrying out registration of 1.4m Afghan DPs

• Pakistan has successfully completed its first ever smartcard registration of Afghan refugees, a UN agency reported on January 4, 2022.
• In another report, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) urged the international community to scale up its support to Iran, which received about half a million Afghan refugees in 2021.
• The UNHCR report noted that this week Pakistan completed its first ever drive to verify data of around 1.4 million on-the-move refugees. Those registered include more than 200,000 children under five

6. Fresh guidelines issued for inbound airline passengers

• The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) on January 4, 2022 issued fresh guidelines for inbound airline passengers, abolishing categories `B` and `C` with immediate effect.
• However, vaccination will be mandatory for all inbound passengers of over15 years of age with a negative PCR report before boarding (maximum 48 hours old).
• According to the guidelines, 100 per cent Rapid Antigen Testing (RAT) will be mandatory for all the passengers arriving from Europe and minimum 50pc for the passengers coming from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar

7. Bank assets rise 21pc to Rs28.8tr in 12 months: SBP

• The banking sector maintained its growth momentum as not only its assets and deposits rose but the advances to the private sector also witnessed encouraging growth during the 12 months from September 2020 to September 2021.
• During the 12-month period, the total assets of the banking sector rose 20.9 per cent to Rs28.790 trillion till September 2021 against Rs23.808tr in September 2020.
• The Quarterly Compendium: Statistics of the Banking System for July-September 2021 (Q3CY21), issued by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on January 4, 2022, observed that the quarterly stress test results also revealed that the banking sector was likely to remain resilient even under reasonably severe economic shocks over a protracted period of time

8. Canadian court OKs $80m compensation over jet downing in Iran

• A Canadian court has awarded more than $80 million in compensation to the families of six people who died when Iran shot down a Ukrainian airliner almost two years ago, according to a decision made public.
• Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 was shot down shortly after take-off from Tehran on January 8, 2020, killing all 176 people aboard including 85 Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
• Three days later, the Iranian armed forces admitted to downing the Keiv-bound plane `by mistake.` Ontario Superior Court Judge Edward Belobaba had previously ruled that the strike on the civilian aircraft `constituted terrorist activity`, paving the way for bereaved families to seek compensation.

9. Two suspects held in India over fake online sale of Muslim women

• Police in India have detained a man and a woman alleged to be involved in the offering for sale of prominent Muslim women on a fake online auction website, according to government officials, in a case that has sparked outrage across the country.
• The cyber unit of the Mumbai Police detained the two suspects following a complaint from one of the targeted woman. It wasn`t clear whether the two created the website.
• Police brought charges against the man, a 21-year-old engineering student, and said they were investigating the woman further

10. Shaheen shortlisted in five categories for PCB Awards

• Pakistan`s pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi has been shortlisted in as many as five categories for the PCB Awards 2021.
• The winners will be announced in a virtual digital show on Thursday.
• The 21-year-old left-armer Shaheen has been nominated in Impactful Performance of the Year, T20I Cricketer of the Year, ODI Cricketer of the Year, Test Cricketer of the Year and Most Valuable Cricketer of the Year categories by an independent 10-member jury, which comprises former international cricketers, broadcasters and members of the media.
• Shaheen had a stellar 2021 across all formats. In nine Tests, he took 47 wickets and backed up with eight wickets in six ODIs and 23 wickets in 21 T20Is.
• His 3-31 show against arch-rivals India in the ICC T20 World Cup has made him one of the four candidates for the Impactful Performance of the Year award
