1. Fencing on border with Afghanistan to continue, says ISPR

• Military spokesman Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar on January 5, 2022 reaffirmed the resolve to complete fencing of the 2,600km-long border with Afghanistan, downplaying recent events of removal of fence and obstruction of the construction work by the Taliban fighters as `localised issues`.
• Speaking at a media conference at the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) office, he said: `There is no problem, the fencing is continuing and will continue.
• The ISPR chief touched upon the issue of the fencing in his opening remarks, besides discussing it during the subsequent question and answer session.


2. ICAO withdraws safety concerns on Pakistan

• The global aviation watchdog has cleared the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) from its significant safety concerns, paving the way for lifting restrictions on Pakistani-registered aircraft by the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States.
• In a Jan 4 letter addressed to PCAA director general Khagan Murtaza, International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) official Denis Guindon stated that a validation committee `reviewed the actions and relevant evidence validated in Pakistan` and it determined that the action `taken by Pakistan had successfully resolved` the concerns.
• The restrictions were imposed on Pakistan on Sept 18, 2020. A nine-member ICAO committee then carried out a 10-day audit in the country last year, which was concluded in early December


3. ECC allows import of urea from China

• The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet on January 5, 2022 approved import of 50,000 tonnes of urea from China on an immediate basis subject to clearance from the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority.
• A meeting of the ECC presided over by Minister for Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin allowed the import on a government-to government basis and tasked the Trading Corporation of Pakistan with negotiating the price with a Chinese supplier authorised by the government of China for further import of urea.
• The fertiliser manufacturers welcomed the government`s decision to import 50,000 tonnes of urea to overcome its shortage in the country.


4. Two-year age relaxation for all provincial competitive exams

• The Punjab government has decided to offer a two-year age relaxation across the board to candidates appearing for all posts advertised by the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC), including the Provincial Management Service (PMS).
• The Standing Committee of Cabinet on Legislative Business chaired by Punjab Law Minister Basharat Raja last month had approved allowing a one-time one-year age relaxation to candidates aspiring to appear for the PMS competitive examination.
• The committee had met and taken a decision on a summary moved by the PPSC chairman, wherein he had requested for a one-year age relaxation to the PMS aspirants as the commission had not conducted the examination during 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The chairman stated that many a candidate would become ineligible if the age relaxation was not granted, and lose their right to appear for the competitive examination


5. Pakistan, GCC finalise action plan for strategic dialogue

• Pakistan and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on Wednesday finalised the Joint Action Plan for Strategic Dialogue (2022-26).
• The plan, in line with a memorandum of understanding on strategic dialogue, provides for an institutional approach to deepen cooperation in various fields, including political, security, trade and investment, agricultural and food security, transportation, energy, environment, health, culture and education.
• The action plan was finalised during a delegation-level meeting between Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and GCC Secretary General Dr Nayef Falah M. Al-Hajraf


6. North Korea fires `ballistic missile` into sea

• North Korea fired what appeared to be a ballistic missile into the sea on January 5, 2022, South Korea and Japan said, in the first such launch by Pyongyang this year.
• In the decade since Kim Jong Un took power North Korea has made rapid progress in its military technology, at the risk of international sanctions.
• The nuclear-armed nation`s first apparent weapons launch of 2022 follows a year of major arms tests despite severe economic hardship during the coronavirus pandemic.
• The South Korean military said the North fired what is `presumed to be a ballistic missile` towards the sea east of the peninsula at around 8:10am from Jagang province, which borders China


7. Diplomats scuffle at Afghan embassy

• Police were called to Afghanistan`s embassy in Rome this week after a sacked Afghan diplomat claiming ties to the Taliban attacked the ambassador, the mission said.
• Many of Afghanistan`s embassies are in diplomatic limbo, with staff still loyal to the Western-backed government toppled by the Taliban last August.
• The Taliban have not appointed new representatives to most missions, however, and their government is not recognised by any nation


8. Taliban order shop owners to behead mannequins

• The Taliban have ordered shop owners in western Afghanistan to cut the heads off mannequins, insisting figures representing the human form violate Islamic law.
• A video clip showing men sawing the heads off shop dummies in Herat has gone viral on social media, drawing scorn both inside and outside the country.
• Since returning to power in August, the Taliban have increasingly imposed a harsh interpretation of Islamic law and severely curtailed freedoms particularly those of women and girls


9. Kazakh president`s home set ablaze as protests escalate

• Protesters in Kazakhstan`s largest city stormed the presidential residence and the mayor`s office on January 5, 2022 and set both buildings on fire, according to new reports, as demonstrations sparked by a rise in fuel prices in the Central Asian nation escalated sharply.
• Police fired on some protesters at the presidential palace before fleeing. They have clashed repeatedly with demonstrators in recent days, deploying water cannons in the freezing weather, tear gas and concussion grenades.
• The government resigned in response to the unrest and the president vowed to take harsh measures to quell it. In possibly the first of those efforts, Kazakh news sites became inaccessible late in the day, and the global watchdog organization Netblocks said the country was experiencing a pervasive internet blackout


10. US-led coalition comes under fire in Iraq and Syria

• Bases used by the US-led coalition fighting the militant Islamic State group came under fire January 5, 2022 in Iraq and Syria but without causing any casualties, officials said, the latest of several attacks.
• Attacks targeting installations hosting coalition forces have come as Tehran and its allies across the Middle East held emotional commemorations marking the second anniversary on Monday of the assassination of Iranian commander General Qasem Soleimani and his Iraqi lieutenant in a US drone strike at Baghdad airport.
• The US said at the time that Soleimani was planning imminent action against US personnel in Iraq, a country long torn between the competing demands of its principal allies Washington and Tehran. On Wednesday evening, five rockets targeted an air base used by the coalition in western Iraq.
