1. Remittances over $2bn for 7th month running

• Remittances from overseas Pakistanis during December 2020 rose by 16.2 per cent year-on-year to $2.436 billion, compared to $2.097bn in December 2019, clocking in above $2bn mark for the seventh consecutive month, according to the latest data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on January 8, 2021.
• Sharing the jump in remittances, Prime Minister Imran Khan said in a tweet: `I want to thank our overseas Pakistanis for yet another record-breaking month of remittances in December $2.4bn. Masha Allah, first time in Pakistan, remittances have been above $2bn for six consecutive months.
• Total for six months of this fiscal year [is] $14.2bn a 24.9pc growth over last year.


2. Army chief honoured with Bahrain Order award

• Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa was honoured with the Bahrain Order (first class) award by the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and Prime Minister of Bahrain Prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa for making significant contribution to defence cooperation between Bahrain and Pakistan.
• The army chief visited Bahrain on an official trip from Jan 6 to 8 and called on Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad, Commander-in-Chief of Bahrain Defence Forces Field Marshal Sheikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa and Commander of Bahrain National Guard Lt Gen Sheikh Mohammed Bin Isa Al Khalifa, said a press release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations on January 8, 2021


3. PM launches Special Technology Zones Authority

• Prime Minister Imran Khan said on January 8, 2021 that information technology was a revolutionary sector that needed to be exploited by companies in the country to meet the demands of the contemporary world.
• Addressing the launching ceremony of the Special Technology Zones Authority (STZA) here, he said that only those companies gained during coronavirus pandemic that adapted to IT well in time


4. Farieha Aziz wins HRCP research grant

• The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has announced the winner of the first I.A. Rehman Research Grant.
• Farieha Aziz has been awarded the grant and she would study the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 and its consequences for citizens` fundamental rights in Pakistan. Her findings will be published and disseminated by the HRCP.


5. New price monitoring mechanism introduced

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on January 8, 2021 approved a Decision Support System for Inflation (DSSI) to record and monitor prices of essential commodities in 17 major cities.
• The DSSI will monitor the performance of deputy commissioners in these cities in terms of implementation of their price lists commonly known as DC rates of essential food items and a subsequent ranking of better governance will be released each Thursday


6. Seth Abid passes away

• Controversial businessman Seth Abid died after a brief illness at a hospital in Karachi on January 8, 2021 night. He was about 85 years old, according to his nephew Yasser Mahmood.
• `Seth Abid is no more. He was shifted to a hospital in Karachi by the family for medical treatment. But he couldn`t survive, Mahmood confirmed.


7. Khamenei bans import of vaccines from US, UK

• Iran`s Supreme Leader on January 8, 2020 banned the government from importing Covid-19 vaccines from the United States and Britain, labelling the Western powers `untrustworthy`, as the infection spreads in the Middle East`s hardesthit country.
• In a live televised speech, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei raised the prospect of the two Western countries possibly seeking to spread the infection to other countries


8. UAE to reopen borders to Qatar today

• The UAE will reopen its borders to Qatar from January 9, 2021 (today), its official news agency said, making it the first of several boycotting countries to do so after a more than three-year blockade.
• Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt in June 2017 cut air, land and sea links with Qatar over claims the gas-rich nation backed Islamists and was too close to Iran charges Doha denied.


9. 2020 ties with 2016 as hottest year on record: EU body

• Last year tied with 2016 as the world`s warmest on record, rounding off the hottest decade globally as the impacts of climate change intensified, the European Union`s Copernicus Climate Change Service said on January 8, 2021.
• After an exceptionally warm autumn and winter in Europe, the continent experienced its hottest year on record in 2020, while the Arctic suffered extreme heat and atmospheric concentrations of planet-warming carbon dioxide continued to rise


10. PCB announces PSL 2021 schedule

• Due to Covid19 pandemic the Pakistan Cricket Board`s plan to hold matches of the 2021 HBL Pakistan Super League at five centres instead of four, has now been reduced to just two-Karachi and Lahore as the PCB on January 8, 2021 announced the schedule of the league starting on Feb 20.
• Last year, the PCB staged all the 34 PSL matches at four centres Lahore, Karachi, Multan and Rawalpindi, and succeeded in holding the entire league in Pakistan for the first time since its inception in 2016
