1. Tragedy befalls Murree as 22 die trapped in snowfall

• The army and the district administration launched a massive operation to rescue stranded tourists in and around Murree after 22 people, including women and children, were found dead in their vehicles trapped in heavy snowfall.
• To enjoy snowfall, tens of thousands of people thronged Punjab`s hill town of Murree but a large number of vehicles stranded in snow on Friday night and 22 people died. Eight of them froze to death in their cars and others probably died from asphyxiation after inhaling exhaust fumes in snow-bound vehicles.
• On Saturday morning, the Punjab government declared the area in and around Murree calamity-hit area. According to AFP, videos shared on social media showed cars packed bumper-to-bumper, with one-metre-high piles of snow on their roofs


2. IMF accepts request to postpone review of loan plan

• The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has accepted Pakistan`s request to postpone the review of its $6 billion loan programme scheduled for Jan 12.
• The review is now expected to take place either on Jan 28 or 31, they said.
• The government on Jan 4 laid the controversial Finance (Supplementary) Bill 2021, generally known as mini-budget, before the Senate following its introduction in the National Assembly on Dec 30, 2021 along with the State Bank of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill 2021.The approval of the two bills is necessary to ensure that the sixth review of the country`s $6bn Extended Fund Facility gets cleared by the IMF`s Executive Board. The government initially aimed to have the two bills passed before the IMF board`s meeting scheduled for Jan 12


3. Taliban foreign minister in first trip to Iran

• The Taliban`s foreign minister visited Iran on Saturday to discuss Afghan refugees and a growing economic crisis, in the first such trip to the neighbouring country since the Islamists seized power.
• Iran, like other nations, has so far not recognised the new government formed by the Taliban after it took power amid a hasty withdrawal by US-led foreign forces in August.
• `The visit aims at discussions on political, economic, transit and refugee issues between Afghanistan and Iran, the Taliban foreign ministry spokesman Abdul Qahar Balkhi said on Twitter.
• Already host to millions of Afghans and fearing a new influx, Tehran has sought to sketch a rapprochement with the Taliban.


4. Gunmen kill 140 people in Nigeria: residents

• Gunmen known in northwest Nigeria as `bandits` killed at least 140 people in multiple raids this week, four residents told AFP on January 8, 2022, but there was no official confirmation.
• Clashes between herders and farmers over access to land has plagued northwest and central Nigeria for years, with some groups evolving into criminal gangs who now terrorise local communities.
• `We buried a total of 143 people killed by the bandits in the attacks, said Balarabe Alhaji, a community leader in one of the affected villages in Zamfara state


5. 3 Saudi princess freed after three years in jail

• Saudi authorities have released a princess and her daughter who had been held without charge for nearly three years in the capital, a human rights group said on January 8, 2022.
• Basma bint Saud, 57, a royal family member long seen as a proponent of women`s rights and a constitutional monarchy, has been detained since March 2019, and in April 2020 implored King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to release her on health grounds.
• `Basma bint Saud Al Saud and her daughter Suhoud… have been released,` the ALQST for Human Rights said on Twitter. `She was denied the medical care she needed for a potentially life threatening condition,` the rights group added. `At no point during her detention has any charge been levelled against her.` Saudi officials were not immediately available to comment on the


6. Palestinian activist lands in France after release from Egypt

• Egyptian-Palestinian activist Ramy Shaath arrived in France on January 8, 2022 following almost two-and-a-half years of detention in Egypt, after his family said he had to renounce his Egyptian nationality.
• The 48-year-old was a figure of the 2011 uprising in Egypt and the coordinator of the Egyptian chapter of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel.
• A correspondent saw the activist walk out of Charles De Gaulle Airport outside Paris with his French wife, Celine Lebrun


7. Kazakhstan`s ex-security chief arrested on suspicion of treason

• Kazakhstan`s former intelligence chief has been arrested on suspicion of treason, the state security agency said on January 8, 2022, as the former Soviet republic cracks down on a wave of unrest and starts to assign blame.
• The detention of Karim Massimov was announced by the National Security Committee which he headed until he was fired by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on Wednesday after violent protests swept across the Central Asian nation.
• Tokayev`s office said he had told Russian President Vladimir Putin in a phone call that the situation was stabilising


8. Webb telescope deployed fully in space

• The James Webb Space Telescope completed its two-week-long deployment phase on January 8, 2022, unfolding the final mirror panel as it readies to study every phase of cosmic history.
• Engineering teams cheered back at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, as NASA announced on Twitter that the final wing was deployed.
• `I`m emotional about it what an amazing milestone,` Thomas Zurbuchen, a senior NASA engineer, said during the live video feed as stargazers worldwide celebrated


9. HBL Pakistan Super League Franchises complete supplementary, replacement picks

• The six franchises of the HBL Pakistan Super League bolstered their ranks as they picked additional players and submitted partial replacements for the players unavailable for initial few matches in the supplementary and replacement draft held through a virtual session on Saturday.
• Defending champions Multan Sultans added England pacer David Willey and Rizwan Hussain as their supplementary picks while replacing two West Indian players with their compatriots. Wicket-keeper Johnson Charles and pacer Dominic Drakes replaced allrounder Odean Smith and batter Rovman Powell.
• Karachi Kings, champions in 2020, had the first supplementary pick and added PCB Domestic Cricketer of the Year award winner Sahibzada Farhan and English all-rounder Jordan Thompson to their squad. They replaced Pakistan U-19 captain Qasim Akram,who is on national duty in the West Indies because of the U-19 World Cup, with left-arm spinner Mohammad Taha Khan and reserved their pick for Tom Abell.


10. Canada stun Russia to make ATP Cup final

• Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime rallied to victory in the deciding doubles rubber against defending champions Russia to fire Canada into their first ATP Cup final on January 8, 2022.
• The Canadians beat the Russian pair of Daniil Medvedev and Roman Safiullin 4-6, 7-5,10-7 in a final set super tiebreaker to seal the tie 2-1 and set up a Sunday final in the $10 million team event against Spain.
• Medvedev and Safiullin had been 3-0 in doubles this week but the Canadians ending that winning streak
