1. $600m WB loan sought for hybrid social protection scheme

• The government has requested the World Bank for a loan of $600 million to roll out an innovative hybrid social protection scheme to support its aspirations around risk mitigation and financial inclusion among the poor and informal workers.
• The scheme will blend social assistance with social risk mitigation elements to help reduce the vulnerability of the missing middle to shocks under the `Pakistan Crisis-Resilient Social Protection` programme, according to a new World Bank document released on Saturday


2. Pakistan earns $121.89 million from export of travel services

• Pakistan earned $121.980 million by providing different travel services in various countries during the first four months of the current financial year 2020-21.
• This shows the decline of 27.87 per cent as compared to $169.104 million same services were provided during the corresponding period of the fiscal year 2019-20, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) said.
• During the period under review, the personal travel services decreased by 27.54 per cent, from $167.264 million last year to $121.200 million during July-October (2020-21)


3. Nine countries appoint new ambassadors to Pakistan

• Nine important countries have appointed new ambassadors to Pakistan.
• Their predecessors had left the country on completion of their tenure in Islamabad last year and the government has accorded consent for their appointment accordingly.
• The countries which have designated new envoys for Pakistan are: Nepal (Tapas Adhikari), Belarus (Andrei Metdlitsa), South Korea (Sush Sangpyo), Cuba (Zener Javier), Mali (Dianguinadit Yaya Doucoure), Ireland (Ms Sonya McGuinness), Sierra Leone (Alie Kamara), Cambodia (Ung Sean) and Kosovo (Ilir Dugolli)


4. UNSC members rebuff India’s bid to secure leadership of key panels

• India’s bid to assume the chairmanship of some of the most important subsidiary bodies of the UN Security Council could not muster support from other members of the 15-nation body, according to diplomatic sources.
• The sources said that the Indians pushed for, but failed, to secure the chairmanship of the powerful 1267 Al-Qaeda/Daesh Sanctions Committee and the 1540 Non-proliferation Committee and also to become the custodian of the Afghanistan file in the Security Council.
• Aware of India’s narrow bilateral agenda to utilise the Al-Qaeda and Daesh Sanctions Committee for its own purposes, the vast majority of the Council members were opposed to giving India the chairmanship of this key committee. A Council source told this news agency that India tried its utmost, until the very last moment, to get this position, lobbying intensively in New York and in the capitals of the Council’s members, but it failed to convince them.


5. Poet Naseer Turabi dies

• Distinguished Urdu poet Naseer Turabi died of a heart attack on January 10, 2021 evening. He was 74. He leaves behind his wife and two sons.
• Mr Turabi was born on June 15, 1945 in Hyderabad Deccan. He was the son of the renowned religious scholar and khateeb Allama Rasheed Turabi. After independence his family decided to migrate to Pakistan and settle in Karachi where he grew up. He obtained his masters degree in journalism from the University of Karachi in 1968 after which he joined an insurance company


6. Algerian ex-PM admits selling gold bars in black market

• Former Algerian premier Ahmed Ouyahia, on trial for corruption, admitted January 10, 2021 to receiving gold bars from Gulf donors then selling them on the black market, the official APS news agency reported.
• Ouyahia and fellow ex-prime minister Abdelmalek Sellal are accused of covertly financing the 2019 re-election bid of then-president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who resigned shortly afterwards amid mass anti-government protests


7. US ends curbs on official contacts with Taiwan

• The United States has decided to end restrictions governing official contacts with Taiwan, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on January 10, 2021, a move hailed by Taipei as ending `decades of discrimination`.
• Pompeo said the `complex internal restrictions` on contacts with Taipei by diplomats, service members and others had been imposed `in an attempt to appease the Communist regime in Beijing.`Pompeo added, `No more.` The declaration may be more symbolic than substantive in effect, but it nonetheless appears certain to anger China, which sees Taiwan as its own territory. Taiwan`s government welcomed the move.


8. Kyrgyz nationalist wins landslide victory in presidential poll

• Populist Sadyr Japarov was on the path to an easy win on January 10, 2020 in Kyrgyzstan`s presidential election, the first vote following recent political upheaval in the Central Asian country.
• Results published by the ex-Soviet country`s Central Election Commission (CEC) showed Japarov with close to 80 percent of the vote after an automated count


9. Austrian minister quits over plagiarism charges

• Austria’s Labour Minister Christine Aschbacher has resigned after allegations that she plagiarised some of her university work, but denied any wrongdoing and said she was stepping down to protect her family.
• Aschbacher, a member of the conservative Austrian People’s Party which leads the coalition government, allegedly copied at least one fifth of her doctoral dissertation from other sources, as well as chunks of her diploma thesis, according to academic Stefan Weber who specialises in detecting plagiarism


10. Quetta sign up Gayle, Lynn joins Multan for PSL VI

• The explosive West Indies opener Chris Gayle was on Sunday signed up by former champions Quetta Gladiators, while the popular Australian Chris Lynn has switched from Lahore Qalandars to Multan Sultan as the six HBL Pakistan Super League franchises confirmed their line-ups for the sixth edition of PCB`s marquee event.
• Hasan Ali the Pakistan paceman who was a guiding force behind Central Punjab`s resurgence during the backend of the Quaide-Azam Trophy while leading them to the maiden first-class final to end in a tie will turn out for two-time winners Islamabad United in the Feb 20-March 22 competition after being integral part of the Peshawar Zalmi side over the first five seasons
