1. Defence, trade ties with Azerbaijan, Turkey to be expanded

• Pakistan, Turkey and Azerbaijan on January 13, 2021 agreed to broaden their cooperation and reaffirmed support for each other on issues of concern to them.
• Foreign Ministers Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Mevlut Cavusoglu and Jeyhun Bayramov reached the agreement during the second round of trilateral talks held here.
• They discussed cooperation in political, strategic, trade, economic, peace and security, science and technology and cultural fields, besides deliberating on the chaHenges faced in the shape of foreign-sponsored acts of terrorism, cyber-attacks, hybrid warfare, disinformation, and Islamophobia


2. SAPM Nadeem Chan resigns over ‘differences’

• Spokesperson and Special Assistant to Prime Minister Imran Khan, Nadeem Afzal Chan, January 13, 2021 resigned from both of his positions.
• Chan, a seasoned politician known for his independent views, has resigned from both the positions, The Nation has learnt reliably.
• Chan submitted his resignation from both the positions to principal secretary to PM Azam Khan yesterday, the sources said.


3. Moody`s forecasts Pakistan economy will grow 1.5pc

• Moody`s Investor Service on January 13, 2021 forecast Pakistan economy will grow by 1.5pc during the current fiscal year and found Pakistani banks to be stable owing to government support but banking sector risks were growing.
• `Economic activity will remain below pre-outbreak levels, although the economy should return to modest 1.5pc growth in fiscal year 2021,` Moody`s said in its outlook for the Pakistani banking sector


4. Sindh Assembly unanimously rejects PMC-conducted MDCAT

• The Sindh Assembly on January 13, 2021 rejected the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) conducted by the Pakistan Medical Commission and asked the provincial government to approach the centre to `take back` the test.
• Speaking on an admitted adjournment motion moved by Syeda Marvi Faseeh of the Pakistan Peoples Party against `irregularities` in the MDCAT, Health Minster Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho told the house that education was a provincial subject after the 18th Amendment


5. Pakistan calls for outlawing violent nationalist groups at UN

• In an action plan laid out before the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Pakistan called for the proscribing of hyper-nationalist groups including Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) — the parent body of India’s hardline ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — posing “a clear danger to regional and international peace and security”.
• Addressing the 15-member Security Council, Islamabad’s permanent ambassador to the UN Munir Akram suggested to outlaw “violent extremist supremacist groups” like other terrorist outfits


6. History made as US House impeaches Trump for second time

• The US House of Representatives impeached President Donald Trump on January 13, 2021 and sent its impeachment resolution to the Senate to convict him.
• The resolution holds Mr Trump responsible for the Jan 6 mob attack on the Capitol building that led to the death of at least five people and desecrated the temple of American democracy. The move also makes him the first US president to be impeached twice.


7. Free speech has its limits, US military leaders remind troops

• Amid worry about renewed violence on Inauguration Day, the military`s top leaders issued a written reminder to all service members that the deadly insurrection at the Capitol last week was an anti-democratic, criminal act, and that the right to free speech gives no one the right to commit violence.
• A memo signed by all members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff also reminded military members that Joe Biden was duly elected as the next president and will be sworn in to office on Jan 20


8. Telegraph owner David Barclay dies

• David Barclay, the secretive British billionaire whose portfolio included The Daily Telegraph newspaper and The Ritz hotel, has died aged 86 after a short illness, his newspaper reported on January 13, 2021.
• Barclay and his twin Frederick, described by the daily as “identical in appearance, lifestyle and often even in dress”, built a vast business empire from shipping to retail.
• “The Barclay brothers operated as one throughout their active business career, while doing their utmost to avoid personal publicity and discourage media scrutiny,” the broadsheet added


9. Ocean temperatures breaking records

• Even with the COVID-19-related small dip in global carbon emissions due to limited travel and other activities, the ocean temperatures continued a trend of breaking records in 2020.
• A new study, authored by 20 scientists from 13 institutes around the world, reported the highest ocean temperatures since 1955 from surface level to a depth of 2,000 meters.
• The report is published recently in Advances in Atmospheric Sciences and concluded with a plea to the policymakers and others to consider the lasting damage warmer oceans can cause as they attempt to mitigate the effects of climate change


10. Oman set to host Test cricket

• Cricket`s landscape could expand to unexpected horizons as early as next month if a bilateral series between Afghanistan and Zimbabwe goes ahead in the Middle Eastern country of Oman, where the Test match format has never been played before.
• The itinerary of two Tests and three Twenty20 Internationals has yet to be finalised and remains uncertain due to coronavirus (Covid-19) travel restrictions.
