1. Security policy places economy front and centre

• Amid spiralling inflation and a significant rise in the cost of living for nearly all Pakistanis, it is perhaps fitting that the country`s first-ever national security policy acknowledges economic stability as a key component of national security.
• `Pakistan`s vital national security interests are best served by placing economic security as the core element of national security. The country`s security imperatives in the next decade will be driven by the need to realise its economic potential while ensuring national cohesion, territorial integrity, internal security, and citizen welfare,` states the National Security Policy (NSP) 2022-2026.
• Approved by the federal cabinet last week, a public version of the policy was unveiled by Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday While the policy puts economic security at the core of its comprehensive national security vision, other elements covered in the document include national cohesion, defence and territorial integrity, internal security, foreign policy, and human security.


2. Citizens over 18 years allowed free booster dose

• As the country witnessed a surge in Covid-19 cases with positivity rate reaching 7.36 per cent, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Friday allowed all citizens over 18 years of age to get booster dose.
• In a tweet, the NCOC said: `In today`s NCOC session, age limit for booster dose has been further reduced. From tomorrow onwards, citizens over 18 years will be eligible for free booster dose of their choice. Booster (one dose) will be administered after 6 months gap from complete vaccination.
• It stated that vaccine doses administered across the country over the past24 hours stood at 786,835. So far 166,083,807 people have been inoculated 33 per cent of total population and 50pc of eligible population


3. NA passes amended anti-harassment bill

• The Ministry of Human Rights on Friday said the Protection against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Amendment Bill 2022 as amended by the Senate has been passed by the National Assembly.
• In a statement, it said the bill was drafted by the Ministry of Human Rights to facilitate increased participation of women in the workforce and to remove lacunas in the protection against harassment law in Pakistan.
• The bill increased the ambit and scope of the law to include certain professions and employment models that the current legislation did not expressly mention, and provided protection from harassment to people engaged in all types of work formal and informal


4. Govt to give Pakistani nationality to foreign investors

• The government has decided to offer Pakistani nationality to foreign investors, especially to fetch heavy investments from wealthy Afghans and Chinese.
• Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry through a late-night tweet on Friday confirmed the plan.
• The government believes it will fetch billions of dollars of foreign investment by giving Pakistani nationality and proprietary rights to the foreign investors


5. Nadra centres to accept digital payments for services

• The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) in collaboration with Jazz Cash and Easy Paisa has introduced the facility of accepting digital payments for its services at all Nadra registration centres (NRCs).
• Citizens can now digitally pay the fee for processing ID cards and other identity documents through their JazzCash/EasyPaisa app in realtime.
• This service complements the recently launched credit/debit card payments at NRCs, adding to public convenience by providing alternative digital payment methods along with the existing cash payment option. The service shall be available to over 23 million mobile wallet customers


6. Balochistan to have first environmental laboratory

• Balochistan Chief Minister Qudoos Bizenjo on January 14, 2022 approved a plan for setting up the first environmental laboratory in the province.
• Officials of the department concerned moved the summary to the chief minister for the formation of an environmental laboratory and the chief minister approved the plan, official sources said.
• The laboratory will be set up at Lasbela University of Agriculture, Water and Marine Sciences, Uthal, as recommended by experts of the Department of Climate Change and Environment


7. First cancer hospital opens in GB

• Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid Khan on January 14, 2022 inaugurated the 52-bed Gilgit Institute of Nuclear Medicine, Oncology and Radiotherapy (GINOR), the Gilgit-Baltistan`s first cancer hospital.
• The project has been completed at a cost of Rs2.5 billion with the help of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and the federal government. Addressing the ceremony, chief minister Khalid Khurshid said the region`s first cancer hospital was a great addition to the healthcare system of GB.
• He said treatment of cancer was veryexpensive and it was not possible for everyone to bear the heavy costs. `As majority of the people of GB are poor, they cannot afford cancer treatment in other parts of the country. However, now they will have quality treatment in their own region,` the chief minister said


8. HK bans transit passengers from most of world

• Hong Kong announced a ban on passengers from most of the world transiting through its airport on January 14, 2022 as China ramps up strict anti-virus travel measures ahead of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
• The move deepens Hong Kong`s global isolation and comes as Beijing battles to stamp out a flurry of Delta and Omicron outbreaks in the only major economy still pursuing a staunch zero-Covid strategy.
• Like mainland China, Hong Kong has maintained some of the world`s harshest measures throughout the pandemic, including weeks-long quarantines, targeted lockdowns and mass testing


9. EU warns Russia of `robust` response over Ukraine

• EU foreign ministers on Friday warned Russia of a `robust` response, fearing that a cyberattack against Ukraine could prepare the ground for military action by Moscow against its neighbour.
• Even before Friday`s assault on 1(ey Ukrainian government websites, European ministers had warned that cyberattacks could precede, or accompany, a military incursion that Russia may be planning as it masses 100,000 troops on the Ukraine border.
• The standoff with Russia `is serious, more serious than anything we`ve seen in recent years`, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg told reporters at a meeting of the EU`s top diplomats in the French city of Brest


10. UK govt apologises to Queen for parties on eve of Philip`s funeral

• The UK government on Friday apologised to Queen Elizabeth H, after revelations Prime Minister Boris Johnson`s staff broke coronavirus restrictions by partying on the eve of Prince Philip`s funeral.
• `It is deeply regrettable that this took place at a time of national mourning and Number 10 (Downing Street) has apologised to the palace,` Johnson`s spokesman told reporters.
• The message to the 95-year-old head of state is understood to have been sent through official channels by telephone and not personally sent by Johnson, who is under growing pressure to quit after a slew of similar allegations
