1. PIA plane seized in Malaysia over $14m lease dispute

• A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane has been held back by Malaysian authorities due to a British court case over the jet`s lease, the airline said on January 15, 2021, adding that it would pursue the matter through diplomatic channels.
• The Boeing 777 aircraft was seized after a court order, an airline spokesman said, and alternative arrangements were being made for passengers due to fly from Kuala Lumpur back to Pakistan.
• The case involved a $14 million lease dispute, a PIA official said


2. Tahir picked to head Balochistan police

• The federal government has appointed a senior police officer, Mohammad Tahir Rai, as new Inspector General of Balochistan Police.
• Mr Rai will replace Mohsin Hasan Butt, who served in the province for more than two-and-a-half years.
• Mr Rai is a senior police officer of the Pakistan Police Service. Before his new assignment, he worked as chief of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Punjab, for six years


3. Pre-primary to 8th grade classes to reopen on Feb 1

• Education and health ministers on January 15, 2021 decided to extend the opening of pre-primary to eight grade classes till Feb 1 while classes 9 to 12 will reopen on Monday as per schedule.
• The ministers took the decision at a virtual meeting held at the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) in the federal capital.


4. KP legislates to criminalise domestic violence

• The long-delayed proposed law on domestic violence against women was passed by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on January 15, 2021 declaring the abuse of women by family members an offence punishable with one-five years imprisonment along with fine.
• Social welfare minister Hisham Inamullah Khan presented the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Domestic Violence against Women (Prevention and Protection) Bill, 2021, in the house for approval.
• Under the bill, domestic violence against women includes economic, psychological and physical abuses


5. Cabinet removes Naeem as PTV chairman

• A day after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) barred Naeem Bukhari from serving as chairman of Pakistan Television, the federal cabinet removed him and two other directors of PTV board on January 15, 2021.
• At the same time, it reinstated Amir Manzoor, who had been sent home by Mr Bukhari.
• Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry told Dawn that the cabinet, through circulation, took a decision in which Mr Bukhari and two other directors were removed as they were over 65 years old.


6. Sindh Assembly makes manufacture, sale of ice drug capital offence

• The Sindh Assembly on January 15, 2021 unanimously passed the Control of Narcotic Substances (Sindh Amendment) Bill, 2021, making the manufacturing, selling and dispatching of methamphetamine drug, commonly known as ice or crystal, a punishable offence as a person involved in the heinous crime could get death penalty.
• According to the statement of objects and reasons of the government bill, the culprits are given no punishment in trial courts as neurotoxic synthetic drugs including ice, crystal and meth were not defined in the laws


7. US redesignates LJ, LeT as terrorist outfits

• In one of his final acts as the US Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo has redesignated Lashkar-i-Jhangvi (LJ) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) as foreign terrorist organisations.
• A statement issued in Washington on January 14, 2021 evening said that the Department of State had amended the terrorist designations of Lashkar-i-Jhangvi and ISIL Sinai Peninsula (ISIL-SP) group to include additional aliases the two groups use. These aliases have been added to IJ and ISIL-SP`s designations as Foreign Terrorist Organisations (FTO) and as Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGT)


8. North Korea shows off new submarine-launched missile

• Nuclear-armed North Korea unveiled a new submarine-launched ballistic missile at a military parade in Pyongyang, state media showed on Friday, in a calculated show of strength days before Joe Biden`s inauguration as US president.
• The display came after the five-yearly congress of the ruling Workers` Party, where leader Kim Jong Un decried the US as his country`s `foremost principal enemy`


9. Dutch govt quits over child benefits scandal

• Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte`s government resigned on January 15, 2021 over a child benefits scandal, threatening political instability as the country battles the coronavirus pandemic.
• Thousands of parents were wrongly accused by Dutch authorities of fraudulently claiming child allowance, with many of them forced to pay back large amounts of money and ending up in financial ruin


10. Nepali Sherpas break winter record in quest to climb K2

• Four Nepali Sherpas on January 15, 2021 broke the previous record during winters of climbing as high as 26,000 feet while attempting to scale K2.
• According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP), the maximum height achieved by teams in winters in the past was 25,320 feet.
