1. Senate panel to scrutinise foreign visits of PM, former rulers on 19th

• The Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs will meet on Jan 19 to scrutinise foreign visits of Prime Minister Imran Khan and former rulers of the country besides taking up the issue of over 9,000 Pakistanis languishing in prisons of 73 different countries.
• The two issues were referred to the house committee by Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani on Jan 4 after a verbal clash between opposition members and a government minister as the latter targeted former rulers Nawaz Sharif and Asif Zardari while responding to a question asked by Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Senator Mushtaq Ahmed about foreign visits of Prime Minister Imran Khan over the last three years, along with details of those who had accompanied him in these tours.
• The opposition members had also staged a walkout to register their protest over the statement made by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Mohammad Khan while responding to a number of supplementary questions about the foreign visits of Mr Khan over the past three years.


2. `Pakistan ranked fifth among TB high-burden countries`

• Over 44,000 people die of tuberculosis (TB) in Pakistan every year, making it the fifth country on the list of TB high-burden nations.
• Besides, out of the over 600,000 cases that emerge, 27,000 turn out to be resistant to drugs. This was highlighted in a statement issued by the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS).
• In order to raise awareness and conduct advocacy campaign for TB control, prevention and elimination through the involvement of the government, media and civil society, a summit is being organised by the ministry on Tuesday (tomorrow) at Aiwan-i-Sadr


3. Govt inks MoUs with 44 foreign firms at Dubai Expo

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with 44 foreign investment companies at Dubai International Expo-2020 that would bring more than $8 billion investment in different sectors.
• Foreign investors showed great interest to invest in integrated tourism zones, water sports in Hund area of Swabi district, energy and power, food processing, livestock and infrastructure. The investors also included some of the United Arab Emirates-based Pakistanis, said an official statement issued here on January 16, 2022.
• Under of the MoUs, the Kuwait-based Enertech-Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA) would invest $120 million in installation of hydrogen power plant. The company will produce hydrogen from the water that will be transmitted through containers for producing energy from it. Similarly, KIA signed another MoU worth $2700 million investment in the sustainable development in Khanpur area


4. PNS Alamgir visits Tanzania

• Pakistan Navy Ship (PNS) Alamgir visited Dares Salaam, Tanzania, as part of overseas deployment in Africa and established a free medical camp as a goodwill gesture from the people of Pakistan.
• Upon arrival at the port, PNS Alamgir was received by naval and air attache of Pakistan at Tanzania and senior officials from Tanzanian Navy, said a Pakistan Navy media release received here on January 16, 2022.
• During the port visit, the Mission Commander and Commanding Officer of the ship called on Naval Operations and Training Officer Tanzanian Navy and Chief of Medical Services Tanzanian People Defence Force. During the interactions, matters of mutual interests were discussed and resolve to enhance bilateral ties in all spheres was reaffirmed


5. Ukraine claims it has proof Russia behind cyberattack

• Ukraine said on January 16, 2021 it had `evidence` that Russia was behind a massive cyberattack that knocked out key government websites this past week, while Microsoft warned the hack could be far worse than first thought.
• Tensions are at an all-time high between Ukraine and Russia, which Kiev accuses of having massed troops on its border ahead of a possible invasion.
• Some analysts fear the cyberattack could be the prelude to a military attack


6. Taliban fighters pepper spray women protesters

• Taliban forces on January 16, 2022 fired pepper spray at a group of women protesters in Afghanistan`s capital demanding rights to work and education, three demonstrators said.
• Since seizing control of the country in August, the Taliban authorities have imposed creeping restrictions on Afghans, especially on women.
• Around 20 women gathered in front of Kabul University, chanting `equality and justice` and carried banners that read `Women`s rights, human rights`, a correspondent reported.


7. UK govt to cut funding for BBC

• Britain’s government will cut the BBC’s funding by ordering a two-year freeze on the fee that people pay to watch the broadcaster, the Mail on January 16, 2022 reported.
• The future of the licence-payer funded British Broadcasting Corporation is a perpetual topic of political debate, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government most recently suggesting its funding needs to be reformed.
• Set against an inflation rate expected to reach a 30-year high of 6pc or more in April, freezing the licence cost at its current 159 pounds ($217.40) would provide some relief to consumers battling sharply rising costs of living


8. Iran jails anew French academic for `violating` house arrest

• French-Iranian academic Fariba Adelkhah was jailed anew for breaking house arrest restrictions, an official from the Islamic republic`s judiciary authority said on January 16, 2022.
• Her Paris-based support group had on Wednesday announced `with great shock and indignation` her re-incarceration, which comes during sensitive tall(s in Vienna aimed at reviving a 2015 nuclear deal which offered Tehran sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear programme.
• `Ms Adelkhah… has unfortunately knowingly violated the limits of house arrest dozens of times,` Kazem Gharibabadi, deputy head of the judiciary, was quoted as saying by Mizan Online, the authority`s news agency


9. Slain Texas hostage-taker named as British citizen

• The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on January 16, 2022 identified the Texas synagogue hostage-taker as a 44-year-old British citizen, Malik Faisal Akram, adding that apparently he was acting alone.
• The crisis at the Beth Israel synagogue in Colleyville, Texas, ended on Saturday night when FBI agents raided the building, rescued all four hostages and killed the captor.
• `Special Agent in-charge Mathew De Sarno of the FBI Field Office, Dallas, confirmed the identity of the Colleyville, Texas, hostage-taker as British citizen Malik Faisal Akram, 44, said a brief statement issued by the Colleyville police


10. Wapda, PAF declared joint winners at National Kabaddi

• Wapda and Pakistan Air Force (PAF) shared the trophy as they were declared joint winners of the 42nd National Kabaddi Championships after a tough final at the Punjab Stadium here on January 16, 2022.
• Both teams had stood level at 46-46 at the fulltime whistle and the organizers decided to declare both winners after a long debate among themselves.
• Wapda were leading 45-39 at one point before the airmen staged a brilliant comeback to level the score
