1. First investment policy of Balochistan introduced

• The Chief Executive Officer of the Balochistan Board of Investment and Trade, Farman Zarkoon, on January 18, 2021 said that an investment policy had been introduced for the first time in Balochistan.
• Talking to various delegations of investors from Karachi, he said innumerable incentives and facilities had been provided to domestic and foreign companies for investment in Balochistan.
• An attractive environment had been provided to investors in Gwadar Free Zone.

2. UK judge rebukes NAB in Broadsheet ruling

• A deliberate decision was made by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to disregard the known risk of economic harm to the Broadsheet L LC, as the claimant submits, to turn a blind eye to damages that would or might be caused to the Broadsheet by entering into May 20, 2008 Settlement Agreement with Jimmy James and his Colorado companies or in making payments to them, stated Sir Anthony Evans through his Aug 2016 final award determining the liability issues

3. Pakistan approves another Covid-19 vaccine

• As the country reported 1,920 new coronavirus cases and 46 deaths in a single day, the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) on January 18, 2021 approved another Covid-19 vaccine manufactured by Chinese state owned firm Sinopharm.
• Meanwhile, the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), a representative body of doctors, has asked the government to share details of the vaccines which are under consideration for import as well as their efficacy rates

4. ECP suspends 151 legislators for not submitting asset details

• The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) suspended the membership of 154 legislators, including several cabinet members, after the deadline for submission of the annual statement of assets expired on January 18, 2021.
• The ECP had on Jan 1 released a list of 394 legislators belonging to the National Assembly and Senate, as well as the four provincial assemblies, asking them to submit their statements of assets by Jan 16.
• The list includes the names of Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination Fehmida Mirza, Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry, Minister for Maritime Affairs Ali Haider Zaidi and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui

5. Foreign investment drops by 30pc in first half of FY21

• Foreign direct investment (FDI) fell by 30 per cent in the first half of the current fiscal year, reflecting the impact of Covid-19 that is still affecting the country as well as global economies.
• The State Bank`s latest data issued on Monday showed the country received $952 million foreign investment during July-December FY21 compared to $1.357 billion in the same period of last fiscal year.

6. Pakistani teens return to school

• Academic activities from class 9th to 12th all over Pakistan restarted amid strict compliance of Covid-19 SOPs, after more than two months break on January 18, 2021.
• Schools and colleges had closed down on November 26 amid second wave of the pandemic.
• Sindh Education Minister Saeed Ghani Monday asked the education departments to take utmost care strictly observing COVID-19 protocols while reopening schools. Talking to a private news channel, Ghani assured the parents that government will ensure strict compliance of coronavirus SOPs at educational institutes this time. Teachers, students and other staff members have been instructed to maintain social distancing, use masks and hand washing as preventive measures

7. Pakistan Prosperity Index reaches all-time high of 116.3 in Nov 2020: Report

• Policy Research Institute of Market Economy (PRIME) on January 18, 2021 has released a report that stated that Pakistan Prosperity Index continues to pose an upward trend, reaching an all-time high of 116.3 in November 2020.
• PRIME, in its bi-monthly report on Pakistan Prosperity Index (PPI), reviewed country’s macro-economy based on the analysis of four periodic data sets- industrial production, trade volume, price levels, and private sector lending. On a 12-month rolling basis, this issue of the report covers the period December 2019 to November 2020, with June 2019 as the base period.

8. China GDP grows at slowest pace in more than four decades

• China`s GDP grew at the slowest pace in more than four decades in 2020, official data showed on January 18, 2021, but it was still expected to be the only major economy to grow at all after a strong rebound from the coronavirus crisis.
• Covid-19, which has ravaged the world economy, first emerged in central China in late 2019. But the world`s second-largest economy also became the first to bounce back after imposing strict lockdowns and virus control measures

9. Human activity behind nearly all warming: study

• Virtually all global warming since the industrial era is caused by manmade emissions, according to research published on January 18, 2021 that concludes Earth`s natural processes contribute only `negligibly` to climate change.
• Near-surface air temperatures have increased on average around the world just over one degree Celsius since the mid-19th century.
• That 1C increase has already seen more frequent and powerful extreme weather events such as droughts and floods, as well as superstorms made more deadly by rising seas

• The de facto chief of South Korea`s Samsung business empire was convicted on January 18, 2021 over a huge corruption scandal and jailed for two and a half years, in a ruling that deprives the tech giant of its top decision-maker.
• Lee Jae-yong, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics, the world`s biggest smartphone and memory chip maker, was found guilty of bribery and embezzlement in connection with the scandal that brought down president Park Geun-hye
