1. UN resolution against attack on religious sites irks India

• A UN resolution condemning damage and destruction of religious sites has irked India which tried to hide its long history of religious discrimination by objecting to Pakistan`s support to the resolution.
• The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution on January 21, 2021, which also asks the UN secretary general to convene a global conference to spearhead public support for safeguarding places of religious heritage.


2. ICT exports jump 40pc in first half of FY21

• The export of telecommunication and information technology grew 40 per cent to $958 million in the first half-year of the current fiscal year from $684m over the corresponding period of last year, reflecting a higher boost in the post-Covid-19 period.
• `The ICT exports will soon become a very important sector in Pakistan`s total exports of services and 1 am optimistic that these would cross the $2 billion mark in the current financial year, Commerce Adviser Abdul Razak Dawood said on Friday


3. Plane seizure in Malaysia: PIA pays Rs1.124 bn to jet company

• The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) informed a judge at the London High Court on January 22, 2021 that it has paid around $7 million (Rs1.124 billion) to the Peregrine Aviation Charlie Limited in the case pertaining to two jets leased to it by the Dublin-based AerCap.
• It’s over the same case that the Malaysian authorities last Friday seized a PIA Boeing-777 at the Kuala Lumpur airport on the orders of a local court over the non-payment of aircraft lease dues owed to the AerCap.
• Lawyers for both the PIA and the airliner sought adjournment on Friday to a later date in the hope that the full amount will be paid through an agreement without the court issuing any order against the PIA.


4. UN cautions staff not to fly by any Pakistan-registered airline

• The United Nations has cautioned staff of all its agencies worldwide not to travel by any Pakistan-registered airline, including the national flag carrier, because of concerns over the allegedly dubious flying licences of its pilots.
• The shocking claim about dubious licenses, since dialed back, was made by the country’s then aviation minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan on the floor of the National Assembly in July last year


5. Actor Ali Nasir Afridi passes away

• Noted radio, TV, and stage actor Musahib Ali alias Ali Nasir Afridi died of multiple health complications on January 21, 2021 night at 80.
• He was laid to rest in Jamrud New Township on Friday, family sources confirmed.111`II1Ull.
• He left behind a widow and three sons to mourn his death.
• Ali Nasir had been suffering from multiple health issues for the last two years and breathed his last at his residence in Hayatabad.


6. Senate paves way for first black to head Pentagon

• The US Senate voted overwhelmingly on January 22, 2021 to confirm retired Army General Lloyd Austin as President Joe Biden`s defence secretary, making him the first black American to serve in the role.
• The vote was 93-2 in the 100-member chamber, far more than the simple majority needed.
• Lawmakers from both parties said they were pleased that Austin would be installed to lead the Pentagon just two days after Joseph Biden was sworn in as president.


7. Biden proposes extension of nuke treaty with Russia

• President Joe Biden has proposed to Russia a five year extension of a nuclear arms treaty that is otherwise set to expire on Feb 5, the White House said on January 21, 2021.
• The US president proposed the extension even as he asked the intelligence community to look closely into Russia`s cyber attacks, its alleged interference in the Nov 3 election and other actions, press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters.


8. Pfizer to supply 40m Covid shots for poor nations

• Pfizer on January 22, 2021 committed to supplying up to 40 million doses of its Covid-19 vaccine this year to a World Health Organisation-backed effort to get affordable shots to poor and middle-income countries.
• The deal is a boost to the global programme known as Covax, as wealthy nations have snapped up most of the millions of coming shots


9. New research finds benefits from growing up in bilingual home

• Early bilinguals” have advantages over those who learn a second language later.
• New research has found that growing up in a bilingual home can provide unexpected cognitive benefits later in life.
• The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, demonstrates for the first time that adults who acquired their second language as a young child (early bilinguals) are quicker at shifting attention and quicker at detecting visual changes compared to adults who learned their second language later in life (late bilinguals).


10. Bangladesh beat West Indies to seal series

• Bangladesh made it two wins in a row against West Indies, coasting to a seven-wicket victory in the second ODI in Dhaka on January 22, 2021, 22 January and moving up to the third spot in the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League standings.
• Bangladesh now have 20 points with two wins in two games. Once again, their attack proved too much for the inexperienced West Indies batting line-up, the visitors being bundled out for 148. The Bangladesh batsmen, led by captain Tamim Iqbal and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, then chased down the total in just 33.2 overs. West Indies opted to bat, their batsmen seemingly determined to be more resistant than they were in the first ODI
