1. Erdogan launches welding of corvette for Pakistan Navy

• The welding ceremony of the third Milgem class corvette ship for Pakistan Navy was held at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard, Turkey.
• Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Ambassador of Pakistan to Turkey Mohammad Syrus Sajjad Qazi jointly kicked off the project by performing the block welding.


2. Pakistan needs improved groundwater management: report

• A new World Bank report says that the Indus basin groundwater in aquifers in Pakistan is at least 80 times the volume of freshwater held in the country`s three biggest dams, yet in 2020 Pakistan faced a severe groundwater crisis.
• The report titled `Groundwater in Pakistan`s Indus Basin: Present and Future Prospects` says Pakistan lacks a comprehensive, reliable system for measuring groundwater extractions and their impact on the resource base


3. CCI likely to approve Census-2017 on 27th

• The Council of Common Interests (CCI) is likely to approve the controversial Census-2017 at its meeting to be held on Wednesday (Jan 27) with Prime Minister Imran Khan in the chair.
• The PM has called the 44th meeting of the CCI to discuss various issues, including the issue of notification of Census-2017 results.
• The federal cabinet, after a lapse of three years, had approved the National Census with a dissenting note submitted by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), one of the government`s allies


4. ‘Balochistan Women Helpline: 1089’ launched for complaint registration

• The Balochistan government has launched ‘Balochistan Women Helpline: 1089’ for registration of complaints against women harassment at home and work place.
• The women could register their complaints on the helpline regarding harassment, domestic violence, harassment at work place and property issues.
• The strict action would be taken on the complaints of women to ensure safe and free environments for women in the province, he added.


5. Pakistan ranking in SDGs drops from 115 in 2016 to 134 in 2020

• Pakistan’s ranking has dropped on the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) index from 115 in 2016 to 134 in 2020.
• In regional context also Pakistan is worst performer and at the bottom of the South Asian countries in the overall performance of SDGs, official documents reveal. Except India and Pakistan whose rankings have dropped in the last four years (2016-20), all other South Asian countries have upgraded their standings on the SDGs index, official documents available with The Nation reveal


6. Indonesia seizes Iranian and Panamanian tankers

• Indonesia said on January 24, 2021 its coast guard had seized the Iranian-flagged MT Horse and the Panamanian flagged MT Frea vessels over suspected illegal fuel transfers off the country`s waters.
• A statement from coast guard spokesman Wisnu Pramandita said the tankers, seized in waters off Kalimantan province, were escorted to Batam island in Riau Island Province for further investigation


7. Fourth Zimbabwean cabinet member dies of Covid-19 amid surge

• Four Zimbabwean cabinet ministers have died of Covid-19, three within the past two weeks, highlighting a resurgence of the disease that is sweeping through this southern African country.
• President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the coronavirus is reaping a grim harvest in the country


8. Israel opens its embassy in Abu Dhabi; UAE to follow suit

• Israel on January 24, 2021 said it has opened its embassy in the United Arab Emirates, following through on last years US-brokered agreement to establish full diplomatic ties with the Gulf country.
• Israel`s Foreign Ministry said the embassy would be in a temporary office while a permanent location is prepared.
• Eitan Naeh, a veteran Israeli diplomat, will serve as the head of mission


9. Czech trainers teach dogs to sniff out Covid

• In a dog training centre built inside a shipping container located in a Czech mountain village, Renda, Cap and Laky are being put to the test.
• They sniff at six vessels, each containing a piece of cloth with scent from patients with Covid-19, negative donors, or fake samples.
• `Good boy!` exclaims Lenka Vlachova, a trainer working at Prague`s fire brigade, as jagdterrier Renda sits down by one sample, wagging his tail


10. Swiss player wins giant slalom event at Malam Jabba

• Swiss player Victor Rojer clinched first position in the giant slalom category on the final day of Pakistan International Snowboarding Championship at the scenic Malam Jabba ski resort in Swat.
• More than 44 national and international players, four women among them, and fans of snowboarding from different countries including Switzerland, Belgium, France and Afghanistan participated in the event. Senator Faisal Javed was chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony
