1. Embassy in Beijing says 500 Pakistani students in Wuhan

• There are approximately 28,000 Pakistani students all over China, around 800 resident traders and around 1,500 Pakistani traders who travel to China frequently, according to a statement issued by the Embassy of Pakistan in Beijing.
• `There are close to 500 students in Wuhan alone.
• These numbers have to take into account the fact that many of our students come to China either on self financing or on the scholarships offered by the Chinese and they don`t always register with the Embassy. Similarly, our traders and other visitors from Pakistan also don`t always register with the Embassy. So the Embassy has an approximate estimation,` the statement says


2. Pakistan`s external affairs to have serious implications: report

• Pakistan`s external environment will remain challenging throughout 2020 which will have serious implications for its economy, security and internal stability, says a report published by a local think tank.
• The think tank, Islamabad Policy Institute, believes that tense relations with India would continue to consume much of Pakistan`s strategic and diplomatic bandwidth. It, moreover, forecast that peace process in Afghanistan would in near future continue to be marred by uncertainty.
• The report tilted, `Pakistan Outlook 2020: Politics, Economy & Security`, has reviewed current trends in external environment, economy, political stability, and security and on the basis of that made short-term projections in these areas


3. New CEC to take oath tomorrow

• The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will become fully functional after the newly nominated chief election commissioner (CEC) and ECP members from Sindh and Balochistan took oath of office on January 27, 2020.
• According to ECP spokesman Altaf Khan, Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed will administer the oath to Sikandar Sultan Raja as CEC at a ceremony to be held at the Supreme Court building at 1pm.
• Later, the chief election commissioner will administer oath to Nisar Durrani and Shah Mohammad Jatoi as ECP members from Sindh and Balochistan, respectively


4. AJK cabinet committee approves Rs7bn development projects

• The cabinet development committee (CDC) of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has approved nine projects in communications and works (C&W) sector and one each in hydropower generation and physical planning and housing sectors at an estimated cost of more than Rs7 billion.
• The CDC meeting was presided over by Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider and attended by the cabinet members concerned and government officials, including chief secretary and additional chief secretary (development).
• The C&W sector projects included reconstruction of 14-km-long Bong-Chechian-Jatlan road at a cost of Rs699.3 million and Afzalpur Bridgeover Upper Jhelum Canal at a cost of Rs110 million


5. White House lawyers begin Trump defence at Senate trial

• White House lawyers began presenting their defence of Donald Trump at his historic Senate impeachment trial on January 25, 2020, saying the president had done nothing wrong in his dealings with Ukraine and accusing Democrats of seeking to overturn the results of the 2016 election.
• White House counsel Pat Cipollone took the floor for opening arguments at a rare weekend session of the 100-member Senate, which will decide whether the 45th US president should be removed from office.
• Democratic prosecutors from the House of Representatives, which impeached Trump on December 18, had not made their case that the president was guilty of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, Cipollone said at only the third impeachment trial in US history.


6. Iran can enrich uranium at any percentage, says official

• Iran has the capacity to enrich uranium at any percentage if Iranian authorities decide to do so, the deputy head of the country`s nuclear agency said in a report.
• `At the moment, if (Iranian authorities) make the decision, the Atomic Energy Organisation, as the executor, will be able to enrich uranium at any percentage,` Ali Asghar Zarean said.
• Iran said earlier this month it would scrap limitations on enriching uranium, taking a further step back from commitments to a 2015 nuclear deal with six major powers, but pledged to continue cooperating with the UN nuclear watchdog.


7. Limited internet to be restored in Kashmir, no access to social media

• Limited mobile data services and internet will be temporarily restored in Jammu and Kashmir from on January 25, 2020, ending nearly a six month communications lockdown after Prime Minister Narendr a Modi withdrew the Muslim majority region`s autonomy.
• Access will be limited to about 300 `whitelisted` websites and internet speed would remain low, the local Jammu and Kashmir government said in a notice late on Friday.
• However, social media applications that allow `peer to peer` communication will continue to be banned, it said. The decision will be reviewed on Jan 31, the notice added


8. India, Brazil agree to boost ties in IT, biofuel and mining

• India and Brazil on January 25, 2020 agreed to boost trade and investment across a range of fields such as defense, mining, biofuel, cyber security, food, the environment and health.
• India`s Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Brazil as a valuable partner as he and visiting President Jair Bolsonaro witnessed the signing of 15 agreements by their officials in the Indian capital.
• Bolsonaro said he was looking forward to being the chief guest at Indias National Day military and cultural parade on Sunday in New Delhi. India celebrates January 26 as the anniversary of its adoption of Constitution in 1950.


9. Hafeez, Babar dazzle as Pakistan win, clinch T20 series against BD

• Dazzling half centuries by veteran Mohammad Hafeez and skipper Babar Azam propelled Pakistan to a crushing nine-wicket win against Bangladesh to give the hosts victory in the three match series and an unassailable 2-0 lead here at the Gaddafi Stadium before a good week-end crowd on January 25, 2020.
• Chasing a gettable total of 137 for victory, Pakistan made short work of it by achieving it in just 16.4 overs with 20 balls to spare.
• Both Hafeez and Babar struck fluent fifties and appeared in fine form, playing strokes all around the wicket with great ease


10. Pakistan`s Asad Ali climbs highest mountain in South America

• Pakistan`s Asad Ali Memon successfully climbed Aconcagua the highest mountain peak in South America- and hoisted a 50-meter-long national flag at the top this week.
• The 22-year-old mountaineer dedicated his success to the soldiers of Pakistan Army and the people of Kashmir after making it to the highest mountain in the world outside Asia.
• Aconcagua is a mountain in the Principal Cordillera of the Andes mountain range, in Mendoza Province, Argentina with an elevation of 22,837 feet. Climbing Aconcagua was a part of `Seven Summit Challenge` for Asad Ali
