1. PM orders curtailment of cabinet members` protocol

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on July 11, 2021 took serious notice of the extraordinary protocol accorded to federal cabinet members and VIPs and ordered curtailing it to avoid public inconvenience.
• A source in the Prime Minister Office (PMO) told Dawn that PM Khan had directed that security staff of ministers and other VIPs should be reduced to two officials.
• According to media reports, the prime minister took the action after a video of the security detail of Minister of State for Information Farrukh Habib went viral on social media.

2. India pulls out diplomats, security staff from Kandahar consulate

• India has evacuated about 50 diplomats and security personnel from its consulate in Kandahar, the former Taliban bastion in southern Afghanistan, after days of intense fighting, officials and a security source said on Sunday.
• The insurgents claimed this week that they now control 85 per cent of Afghanistan, much of it seized since early May when US-led foreign forces began their final withdrawal from the country.
• The Taliban clashed with government forces this week on the edge of Kandahar city, the capital of Kandahar province where the Islamist movement was born.

3. Japanese ship visits Karachi

• Japanese ship Yuugiri recently visited Karachi port to receive an impressive welcome from senior officials of the Pakistan Navy along with the defence attaché of Japan.
• On completion of the visit, sea exercises were conducted between Pakistan Navy and Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) ships covering a wide range of naval operations.
• The exercise was aimed to enhance interoperability and contribute toward international efforts for ensuring maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.

4. Sialkot varsity to have African studies centre

• The University of Sialkot (USKT) will be the first institution to establish an African study centre in Pakistan.
• The development is backed by Embassy of Pakistan in Ribat, Morocco.
• Ambassador of Pakistan to Kingdom of Morocco Hamid Asghar Khan spoke of potential of Africa with regard to new opportunities particularly in the areas of technology, trade and investment.
• The ambassador [with a pointer in hand] illustrated geostrategic implications of collaboration with the African countries particularly Morocco

5. Oman`s Sultan in Riyadh, seeks Saudi investment

• Oman`s Sultan visited Saudi Arabia on July 11, 2021 on his first official overseas trip since assuming power last year, with talks expected to focus on the Yemen war and economic and investment cooperation as Muscat looks to shore up its finances.
• Sultan Haitham bin Tariq al-Said, whose country has joined United Nations-led efforts to secure a peace agreement in Yemen, arrived in the Red Sea city of Neom for a two-day visit.

6. Remains of 19 Srebrenica massacre victims buried 26 years after genocide

• Nineteen newly identified victims were honoured and buried on July 12, 2021 in Bosnia as thousands gathered to commemorate the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, Europe`s only acknowledged genocide since World War II.
• The slaughter of more than 8,000 Muslim Bosniaks, most of them men and boys, by Bosnian Serb forces was commemorated in speeches, prayers and song, followed by the reburial of victims whose remains were found in mass graves and recently identified through DNA analysis

7. US alarmed as Saudi lawsuits threaten to expose secrets

• Two lawsuits pitting Saudi Arabia`s de facto ruler against a former intelligence czar threaten to expose highly sensitive US government secrets, prompting Washington to consider a rare judicial intervention, documents show.
• The cases in US and Canadian courts centre on corruption allegations levelled by Saudi-owned companies against Saad Aljabri, a former spymaster who long worked closely with American officials on covert counterterrorism operations.
• That marks the latest twist in a long-running feud between Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) and Aljabri.

8. Italy beat England on penalties to win Euro final

• Italy inflicted more penalty heartache on England to win Sunday`s Euro 2020 final 3-2 in a shootout, Bukayo Saka missing the decisive kick to deny the hosts after the game at Wembley had ended in a draining 1-1 draw through extra time.
• Saka`s kick was repelled by Gianluigi Donnarumma to give Italy the Henri Delaunay trophy for the second time at the end of a shootout in which England scored their first two penalties, but then saw Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho also fail

9. Messi`s Argentina beat Brazil to win Copa, first major title in 28 years

• Two long droughts ended on July 10, 2021 at the Copa America final: Argentina won their first major title in 28 years after a 1-0 win against Brazil. And Lionel Messi finally lifted his first major trophy for the national team, filling in one of the biggest gaps in his decorated career.
• Angel Di Maria`s goal gave Argentina a record-equalling 15th Copa America and the victory at Rio de Janeiro`s Maracana stadium ended Brazil` unbeaten home record that stretched back more than 2,500 days

10. Djokovic triumphs at Wimbledon to tie Federer, Nadal with 20 Slams

• Novak Djokovic won a record-equalling 20th Grand Slam title and sixth Wimbledon on July 11, 2021 with a four-set victory over battling Matteo Berrettini of Italy.
• The Serbian world number one triumphed 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 and a third consecutive championship at the All England Club moved him level on 20majors with Switzerland`s Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal of Spain.
