1. Senate passes landmark bill criminalising torture, deaths in custody

• The Senate on Monday unanimously passed a landmark bill criminalising torture and custodial deaths.
• The torture and custodial death prevention and punishment bill, moved by the PPP parliamentary leader in the upper house, was also welcomed by the treasury benches, indicating that it would sail through the National Assembly to become an act of the parliament after assent by the president.
• `It is a much-needed bill.
• It is necessary and urgent, Human Rights Minister Dr Shireen Mazari said when a leave was sought to introduce the bill


2. Govt won`t let Afghan refugees reach cities this time

• Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on July 12, 2021 said Pakistan was keenly monitoring the fast changing situation in Afghanistan and making all out efforts for an all-encompassing government in Kabul.
• Speaking at a joint press conference with Adviser to the Prime Minister on Accountability Mirza Shahzad Akbar and Minister for Energy Hammad Azhar, he said that in case the Afghans sought refuge in Pakistan, the government would not allow them to sneak into cities and would confine them to refugee camps to be established in the Pak Afghan border areas


3. EU unveils humanitarian aid for Pakistan, Iran

• The European Union has announced renewed support for those most in need in Iran and Pakistan with 22 million euros in humanitarian aid.
• The package, announced from the EU headquarters in Brussels on Monday, will assist those hit by manmade crises, Covid-19 pandemic and climate-induced and other natural disasters in the region.
• Of the 22 million euros, 7m euros will go to humanitarian organisations in Pakistan, focusing on the most vulnerable local populations, Afghans, as well as host communities.
• Assistance will comprise Afghans and Pakistanis, affected by conflict, displacement, Covid-19 and natural disasters, including malnutrition


4. Cuba blames US for unprecedented anti-govt protests

• Cuba on July 12, 2021 blamed a US `policy of economic suffocation` for unprecedented anti-government protests, as President Joe Biden backed calls to end `decades of repression` on the communist island.
• Thousands of Cubans took part in demonstrations on Sunday, chanting: `Down with the dictatorship,` as President Miguel Diaz-Canel urged supporters to confront demonstrators.
• The anti-government rallies erupted spontaneously in several cities as the country endures its worst economic crisis in 30 years, with chronic shortages of electricity and food


5. Thai govt imposes tough Covid-19 curbs, curfew in Bangkok

• More than 10 million people were placed under fresh Covid-19 restrictions and a curfew in the Thai capital on July 12, 2021, as the kingdom battled a surge of cases worsened by the highly infectious Alpha and Delta variants.
• Thailand has so far recorded more than 345,000 cases and 2,791 deaths with the bulk of them coming in this latest wave that started in April.
• First detected in clubs frequented by the Thai elite and politicians at an upscale Bangkok nightlife district, the surge has been exacerbated by a slow vaccine rollout and limited testing capacity


6. Beijing `drives away` US warship from S. China Sea

• China`s military said it `drove away` a US warship that illegally entered Chinese waters near the Paracel Islands on July 12, 2021, the anniversary of an international court ruling that held Beijing had no claim over the South China Sea.
• The USS Benfold entered the waters without China`s approval, seriously violating its sovereignty and undermining the stability of the South China Sea ,the southern theatre command of the People`s Liberation Army said.
• `We urge the United States to immediately stop such provocative actions,` it said in a statement


7. World`s deepest pool for diving opens in Dubai

• The world`s deepest swimming pool for underwater diving has opened in Dubai, where people can descend 60 metres (197 ft) to a sunken city-themed landscape and play arcade games.
• Dubai, a tourism and business hub with desert terrain and months of scorching summer temperatures, has a reputation for flamboyant and record-breaking attractions such as its snow-filled indoor ski slope, large water parks and the world`s tallest building.
• The pool, which holds the equivalent of six Olympic swimming pools, has been verified by Guinness World Records as the world`s deepest swimming pool for diving


8. Nepal court ousts PM, reinstates dissolved parliament

• Nepal`s top court ousted the sitting prime minister and reinstated the dissolved parliament on July 12, 2021, plunging the Himalayan nation into further political uncertainty.
• The country has been in a political crisis for months amid infighting between Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli and senior leaders of his party.
• `The dissolved parliament will be reinstated,` the court wrote in its judgement.
• Oli first moved to dismiss parliament in December, but it was reinstated by the Supreme Court, which called his move unconstitutional


9. Top US general in Afghanistan relinquishes command

• The top US general in Afghanistan relinquished command on Monday at a ceremony in the capital, the latest symbolic gesture bringing America`s longest war nearer to an end even as the Taliban continue a bloody onslaught across the country.
• General Austin `Scott` Miller the highest-ranked officer on the ground in the war-torn nation handed command to General Kenneth McKenzie, who will oversee remaining operations from a US-based headquarters.
• Miller has been in Afghanistan since 2018, but was charged more recently by commander-in-chief President Joe Biden with organising the final withdrawal of US troops, to be completed by the end of August.


10. Italy erupts as European champions come home to Rome

• After 18 months of pandemic hell, Italy revelled in some football heaven on July 12, 2021 after its national team brought back the European Championship trophy for the first time since 1968 following victory over England in London.
• Led by coach Roberto Mancini, the players landed shortly after dawn to the ecstatic cheers of Italians who spent the better part of the night honking horns, setting of f fireworks and violating all sorts of coronavirus precautions to celebrate their team`s 3-2 penalty shootout win at Wembley Stadium.
