1. 15pc salary increase for military personnel approved

• The cabinet on July 13, 2021 approved 15 per cent increase in the salary of military personnel, which is in addition to 10pc raise announced in the federal budget.
• In another significant development, the cabinet endorsed the ban on Tehreek-i-L abbaik Pakistan (T LP).
• Besides, the meeting, which was presided over by Prime Minister Imran Khan, tasked the ministries of interior and law to chalk out a strategy to cope with the situation if Afghans sought refuge in Pakistan due to violence in their country

2. PML-Q gets second ministry in federal cabinet

• The Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), an important ally of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf-led coalition government, has finally got a second ministry in the Centre under the agreement both parties had at the time of 2018 general elections.
• Moonis Elahi, the scion of the Chaudhry family of Gujrat, was inducted into the cabinet as federal minister for water resources.
• Before him, Minister for Housing and Works Tariq Bashir Cheema was the only PML-Q leader serving in the federal cabinet.

3. Pakistanis send back record $29.4bn in year

• Overseas Pakistanis remitted record $29.4 billion during 2020-21, helping the country meet its widening trade deficit and expected current account deficit in the last month of the just-ended fiscal year.
• The central bank said that with inflows of around $2.7bn in June (9pc growth year-on-year) and 8pc (month-on-month), workers` remittances continued their unprecedented streak of above $2bn for a record 13thconsecutive month.
• Data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Tuesday showed that remittances posted a 27 per cent year on-year growth, which was the fastest rate of expansion since FYO3

4. Former bureaucrat takes over as ECP secretary

• A retired bureaucrat is in the saddle following the departure of his predecessor as the secretary Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
• Umer Hameed, a retired grade 22 officer of Secretariat Group, has assumed his responsibilities as the ECP secretary on contractual basis.
• They said Mr Hameed was part of the ECP`s team which attended a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs to discuss two bills seeking sweeping changes to the laws that dealt with electoral processes

5. NA body clears amendment to law for speedy disposal of property cases

• A parliamentary committee on July 13, 2021 cleared an amendment to the Code of Civil Procedure, which requires courts to decide cases of movable and immovable property including those involving inheritance rights of women in one year.
• The amendment was moved by Member of National Assembly (MNA) Syed Javed Hasnain, and taken up by the National Assembly Standing Committee on Law and Justice.
• Mr Hasnain had recommended that such cases should not run infinitely. `The amendment binds a civil judge to decide such cases in one year and the appellate court shall take a decision in such cases in 90 days,` he said and committee members agreed with him.

6. Gene editing used to `chop up` Covid virus in human cells

• Scientists have used CRISPR gene-editing technology to successfully block the transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in infected human cells, according to research released on July 13, 2021 that could pave the way for Covid-19 treatments.
• Writing in the journal Nature Communications, researchers in Australia said the tool was effective against viral transmissions in lab tests, adding that they hoped to begin animal trials soon.
• CRISPR, which allows scientists to alter DNA sequences and modify gene function, has already shown promise in eliminating the genetic coding that drives the development of children`s cancer

7. Iran, US `negotiating` prisoner exchange

• Iran confirmed on July 13, 2021 ongoing `negotiations` with the United States over a potential prisoner swap, after a US official said Washington is working to release its detained citizens.
• The US envoy for Iran, Robert Malley, said on Saturday that President Joe Biden insists on the release of all Americans and will not accept a `partial deal`.
• Malley called the release of Americans detained in the Islamic republic a `priority` and said that negotiations with Iran have `made some progress,` NBC News reported

8. Afghan leaders to hold last-ditch talks with Taliban in Doha

• Senior Afghan leaders will fly to Doha for talks with the Taliban this week, as the insurgent group takes a hard stance on negotiations, even warning Turkey against plans to keep some troops in Afghanistan to run and guard Kabul`s main airport.
• The eight-member delegation will include senior Afghan peace official Abdullah Abdullah and former president Hamid Karzai, and is expected to discuss the speeding up of peace talks, a government official said.
• The Taliban did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the talks, which are separate from the stalled intra-Afghan negotiations taking place between Taliban and Afghan government negotiators in the Qatari capital of Doha

9. World Cup winner Naveed Alam dies of cancer

• Former hockey Olympian Naveed Alam, a member of the Pakistan`s World Cup and Champions Trophy winning teams in 1994, died of blood cancer on July 13, 2021, a day after he was admitted to a hospital for treatment. He was 48.
• Naveed had arrived in Lahore from his native Sheikhupura after being diagnosed with blood cancer. He was initially admitted to Sheikh Zayed Hospital as he was suffering from fever before he was transferred to Shaukat Khanum Hospital after his condition deteriorated.
• He received chemotherapy and his condition stabilized before he suffered a heavy cardiac arrest and passed away, leaving behind a wife, two daughters and two sons

10. Vince century helps England seal ODI whitewash

• Pakistan skipper Babar Azam`s stunning knock of 158 was in vain as England`s second string side completed a record run chase at Edgbaston to win by three wickets on July 13, 2021 and clinch the three-match One-day International series 3-0.
• Set a target of 332 for victory, James Vince smashed 11 boundaries enroute to his maiden ODI century (102) which helped guide England home with two overs to spare as a sloppy Pakistan dropped catches and conceded runs through several misfields.
• Opener Dawid Malan was sent back for a second straight duck in the series but Phil Salt (37) and Zak Crawley (39) both dismissed by Haris Rauf attacked the bowlers to keep the chase on track, with the first 100 runs scored by the 13th over.
