1. Senate passes FATF-related bill amid opposition protest

• The Senate on July 16, 2021 passed another FATF-related bill amid an outcry from the opposition which suffered back-to-back defeats in the house where it otherwise enjoys dominating numerical strength.
• When Railways Minister Azam Swati tabled a motion seeking permission to introduce the Mutual Legal Assistance (Criminal Matters) Amendment Bill, the opposition members opposed the move. The motion was put for voting through division and was carried by 43 against 33 votes, marking first blow to the opposition in the day.
• The amendments proposed by Mushtaq Ahmad of Jamaat-i-Islami, who said the bill was against fundamental rights, constitution, principles of natural justice and national interest, were also rejected by a voice vote

2. Punjab lifts ban on recruitment in different depts.

• The Punjab government on July 16, 2021 lifted ban on sanctioned seats for constables and traffic police and allowed two new 16-grade Risaldar seats in the Border Military Police in Rajanpur and recruitment for vacant BMP seats in Dera Ghazi Khan.
• The approval was accorded by the Cabinet Standing Committee in its 60th meeting on Finance and Development. The meeting was presided over by Punjab Finance Minister Makhdoom Hashim Jawan Bakht and attended by Chief Secretary Jawad Rafique Malik, Finance Secretary Iftikhar Ali Saho, Planning and Development Board Chairman Abdullah Khan Sumbal and others.

3. Bidder made CEO of railway freight company

• In a surprising development, the federal government has appointed a chief operating officer of a private firm as chief executive officer (CEO) of the Pakistan Railways Freight Transportation Company (PRFTC) despite knowing the fact that he, very recently on behalf of his company, prepared and submitted bids for getting the project on outsourcing of the railways` freight wagons, business.
• `He was also among various participants who attended pre-bid meetings on behalf of his companies. The recent one he attended was held on July 2,` an official said.
• The appointment of Mr Jawaid Siddiqi as the CEO was approved in the meeting of the cabinet on Friday. He was associated with various subsidiaries of the group for over a decade in top managerial positions

4. Lodhi quits as USC managing director

• The Managing Director of Utility Stores Corporation (USC), Umer Lodhi, has resigned, citing personal reasons.
• Mr Lodhi was recently reappointed for a period of three years. He tendered his resignation due to personal reasons.
• The USC in a statement issued on Friday said that during his term, Mr Lodhi successfully led the corporation from a loss-making entity to almost a self-reliant organisation. The USC management said that employees of the national retail chain would continue the culture of services that the outgoing MD has set in the corporation

5. Second shift in KP govt schools to begin on Aug 1

• The elementary and secondary education department has planned to begin second shift in government schools on Aug 1 to address overcrowded classrooms in the first shift.
• The second shift would be launched in schools with 60 or more students in one classroom.
• They said a class would have 40 students at maximum in line with the education policy.
• The officials said overcrowded classes badly affected the learning of students

6. Four-nation group set up to restore peace in Afghanistan

• The United States, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan have agreed in principle to establish a new quadrilateral diplomatic platform focused on enhancing regional connectivity, the US State Department announced on July 16, 2021.
• A similar announcement was made by the Foreign Office in Islamabad.
• The US State Department said that representatives of the four countries met in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, this week during an international conference on South and Central Asia`s regional connectivity

7. Lucky reaches deal for producing Samsung mobile devices

• Lucky Motor Corporation (LMC) has signed an agreement with Samsung Gulf Electronics Co, FZE for producing Samsung mobile devices in Pakistan.
• In a stock filing on July 16, 2021, Lucky Cement Ltd (LCL) has said that its subsidiary LMC, which is currently engaged in business of manufacturing, assembly, marketing, distribution and sales of Kia and Peugeot vehicles, has also initiated the process of seeking necessary regulatory approvals to carry on the business and in this endeavor, it has filed an application with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for securing the license.

8. WhatsApp blocks 2 million Indian users over violations

• WhatsApp blocked more than two million users in India in just one month for violating its rules, the US company disclosed in its first compliance report under India`s controversial new social media rules.
• Most of the users were blocked for spam message abuses. The Facebook-owned firm has put a limit on mass forward messaging in a bid to counter misinformation.
• India implemented new rules in May to regulate social media companies, forcing them to disclose each month their efforts to police their platforms

9. India bans Eid sacrifice in held Kashmir

• The Indian government has ordered authorities in held Kashmir to ban the slaughter of all animals in the Muslim-majority region for Eidul Azha.
• The order by the Hindu nationalist government, released late on July 15, 2021, is likely to heighten tensions in India-held Kashmir, where anxiety has deepened since New Delhi revoked its special autonomous status in August 2019.
• Cows are considered sacred by many Hindus and their slaughter is banned in the region and many Indian states, but the new order extends the ban to all animals for the first time

10. Pakistan hit back after ODI humiliation to win first T20

• A lightning-fast opening stand of 150 in 15 overs between captain Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan set up Pakistan`s 31-run win over England in the first Twenty20 International at Trent Bridge on July 16, 2021.
• Babar hit 85 from 49 balls and Rizwan 63 from 41 in a Pakistan record total of 232-6.
• England, in reply, lost four wickets in the first seven overs, and their hopes flickered thanks only to Liam Livingstone, who hit a record-breaking 103 from just 43 deliveries.
• But he was seventh man out in the 17th over and England were soon all out for 201 with four balls left
